    Does size matter? Effects of small vs. large pitch small-sided game training on speed and endurance in collegiate soccer players

    The aim of this study was to compare the training effect of small-sided games (SSGs) played using large (SSG-L) and small (SSG-S) area per player (ApP) on speed and endurance in college soccer players. Twenty male NCAA division 1 soccer players were randomly assigned to 2 experimental training groups: SSG-L (n = 10), or SSG-S (n = 10). During the 4-week intervention, both groups performed 3 sets of 4-8 minutes of 5 vs 5 SSGs using either a large (300m2; SSG-L) or small (75m2; SSG-S) ApP. Pre- and post-training, players completed linear sprint (20- and 40-m sprint), repeated sprint, and aerobic endurance tests. Following the intervention, both groups exhibited improvements in 20-m, 40-m, and maximum sprinting speed (all p 0.05, g = 0.04 –0.29). No differences or interaction effects in repeat-sprint ability were found for either group (p > 0.05). A decline in maximal aerobic speed occurred in SSG-S (p = 0.010, g = 0.60) whilst no change was reported for SSG-L. Following the intervention, anaerobic speed reserve was lower for SSG-L versus SSG-S (p = 0.013; g = -0.23). No further between-group differences were reported at either time-point. These results suggest that SSGs played with small ApP may not be adequate to maintain aerobic fitness

    Pre-sorting and pen size effects on the stress responses at loading and unloading and transport losses in market weight pigs

    Transport losses represent three challenges for the US swine industry and these are: 1) pig well-being, 2) increased rules and regulations, and 3) direct financial losses to producers and packers. Therefore; improving the well-being of pigs during transport and reducing the incidence of dead and non-ambulatory pigs is a priority for the US swine industry (NPB, 2007). Johnson et al. (2010) studied the effects of grow-finish pen size and manually pre-sorting pigs the day before loading on the stress responses at loading and unloading and transport losses in market weight pigs. The authors reported that pigs loaded from large pens (192 pigs/pen) that were pre-sorted from pen mates had 66% fewer dead and non-ambulatory pigs at the harvest facility compared to pigs loaded from small pens (32 pigs/pen) that were sorted from pen mates during loading. However, it is unclear if the reduction in transport losses was due to pen size and/or pre-sorting before marketing. Therefore, the objectives of the current two research trials were to 1) determine the effects of pre-sorting prior to loading on stress responses and transport losses at the harvest facility in the market weight pig; and 2) determine the effects of grow-finish pen size on stress responses and transport losses at the harvest facility in the market weight pig

    Optic nerve crush induces spatial and temporal gene expression patterns in retina and optic nerve of BALB/cJ mice

    BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) trauma and neurodegenerative disorders trigger a cascade of cellular and molecular events resulting in neuronal apoptosis and regenerative failure. The pathogenic mechanisms and gene expression changes associated with these detrimental events can be effectively studied using a rodent optic nerve crush (ONC) model. The purpose of this study was to use a mouse ONC model to: (a) evaluate changes in retina and optic nerve (ON) gene expression, (b) identify neurodegenerative pathogenic pathways and (c) discover potential new therapeutic targets. RESULTS: Only 54% of total neurons survived in the ganglion cell layer (GCL) 28 days post crush. Using Bayesian Estimation of Temporal Regulation (BETR) gene expression analysis, we identified significantly altered expression of 1,723 and 2,110 genes in the retina and ON, respectively. Meta-analysis of altered gene expression (≄1.5, ≀-1.5, p < 0.05) using Partek and DAVID demonstrated 28 up and 20 down-regulated retinal gene clusters and 57 up and 41 down-regulated optic nerve clusters. Regulated gene clusters included regenerative change, synaptic plasticity, axonogenesis, neuron projection, and neuron differentiation. Expression of selected genes (Vsnl1, Syt1, Synpr and Nrn1) from retinal and ON neuronal clusters were quantitatively and qualitatively examined for their relation to axonal neurodegeneration by immunohistochemistry and qRT-PCR. CONCLUSION: A number of detrimental gene expression changes occur that contribute to trauma-induced neurodegeneration after injury to ON axons. Nrn1 (synaptic plasticity gene), Synpr and Syt1 (synaptic vesicle fusion genes), and Vsnl1 (neuron differentiation associated gene) were a few of the potentially unique genes identified that were down-regulated spatially and temporally in our rodent ONC model. Bioinformatic meta-analysis identified significant tissue-specific and time-dependent gene clusters associated with regenerative changes, synaptic plasticity, axonogenesis, neuron projection, and neuron differentiation. These ONC induced neuronal loss and regenerative failure associated clusters can be extrapolated to changes occurring in other forms of CNS trauma or in clinical neurodegenerative pathological settings. In conclusion, this study identified potential therapeutic targets to address two key mechanisms of CNS trauma and neurodegeneration: neuronal loss and regenerative failure

    Mixed income housing (MIH)

    Mixed Income Housing (MIH) is the outcome of a deliberate effort to build a mixed-income development, usually including a variety of housing typologies, sometime combined with the goal of creating a mixed-tenure development. International consensus on a more specific definition of MIH does not exist; instead, multiple expressions can be equally used, with similar meaning. The expression MIH is mainly used within the USA context where it is sometime replaced by mixed-income neighborhood. In Europe, MIH tend to fall within initiatives on (sustainable) urban regeneration, neighborhood restructuring, urban renewal, while the UK legislation often refers to “pepper-potting” with respect to different tenures in the same neighborhood aimed to achieve MIH. Non-English-speaking countries tend to use different terms. The MIH policies are challenged by a specific connotation, i.e., in the United States it is the combination between urban poverty and black or Latinos ghettoes; hence, spatial segregation is combined with racial considerations which are less present in other countries, except for South Africa. In the USA, desegregation in public housing estates became a legal obligation following the famous 1969 Gautreaux case, because of the application of the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibiting racial discrimination in federally funded activities

    The Physical and Genetic Framework of the Maize B73 Genome

    Maize is a major cereal crop and an important model system for basic biological research. Knowledge gained from maize research can also be used to genetically improve its grass relatives such as sorghum, wheat, and rice. The primary objective of the Maize Genome Sequencing Consortium (MGSC) was to generate a reference genome sequence that was integrated with both the physical and genetic maps. Using a previously published integrated genetic and physical map, combined with in-coming maize genomic sequence, new sequence-based genetic markers, and an optical map, we dynamically picked a minimum tiling path (MTP) of 16,910 bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) and fosmid clones that were used by the MGSC to sequence the maize genome. The final MTP resulted in a significantly improved physical map that reduced the number of contigs from 721 to 435, incorporated a total of 8,315 mapped markers, and ordered and oriented the majority of FPC contigs. The new integrated physical and genetic map covered 2,120 Mb (93%) of the 2,300-Mb genome, of which 405 contigs were anchored to the genetic map, totaling 2,103.4 Mb (99.2% of the 2,120 Mb physical map). More importantly, 336 contigs, comprising 94.0% of the physical map (∌1,993 Mb), were ordered and oriented. Finally we used all available physical, sequence, genetic, and optical data to generate a golden path (AGP) of chromosome-based pseudomolecules, herein referred to as the B73 Reference Genome Sequence version 1 (B73 RefGen_v1)

    Cosmic Shear in Harmonic Space from the Dark Energy Survey Year 1 Data: Compatibility with Configuration Space Results

    We perform a cosmic shear analysis in harmonic space using the first year of data collected by the Dark Energy Survey (DES-Y1). We measure the cosmic weak lensing shear power spectra using the Metacalibration catalogue and perform a likelihood analysis within the framework of CosmoSIS. We set scale cuts based on baryonic effects contamination and model redshift and shear calibration uncertainties as well as intrinsic alignments. We adopt as fiducial covariance matrix an analytical computation accounting for the mask geometry in the Gaussian term, including non-Gaussian contributions. A suite of 1200 lognormal simulations is used to validate the harmonic space pipeline and the covariance matrix. We perform a series of stress tests to gauge the robustness of the harmonic space analysis. Finally, we use the DES-Y1 pipeline in configuration space to perform a similar likelihood analysis and compare both results, demonstrating their compatibility in estimating the cosmological parameters S8S_8, σ8\sigma_8 and Ωm\Omega_m. The methods implemented and validated in this paper will allow us to perform a consistent harmonic space analysis in the upcoming DES data.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures.
