    Early Brain-Body Impact of Emotional Arousal

    Current research in affective neuroscience suggests that the emotional content of visual stimuli activates brain–body responses that could be critical to general health and physical disease. The aim of this study was to develop an integrated neurophysiological approach linking central and peripheral markers of nervous activity during the presentation of natural scenes in order to determine the temporal stages of brain processing related to the bodily impact of emotions. More specifically, whole head magnetoencephalogram (MEG) data and skin conductance response (SCR), a reliable autonomic marker of central activation, were recorded in healthy volunteers during the presentation of emotional (unpleasant and pleasant) and neutral pictures selected from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). Analyses of event-related magnetic fields (ERFs) revealed greater activity at 180 ms in an occipitotemporal component for emotional pictures than for neutral counterparts. More importantly, these early effects of emotional arousal on cerebral activity were significantly correlated with later increases in SCR magnitude. For the first time, a neuromagnetic cortical component linked to a well-documented marker of bodily arousal expression of emotion, namely, the SCR, was identified and located. This finding sheds light on the time course of the brain–body interaction with emotional arousal and provides new insights into the neural bases of complex and reciprocal mind–body links

    <p>The model xeno-estrogen bisphenol A (BPA) has been extensively studied over the past two decades, contributing to major advances in the field of endocrine disrupting chemicals research. Besides its well documented adverse effects on reproduction and development observed in rodents, latest studies strongly suggest that BPA disrupts several endogenous metabolic pathways, with suspected steatogenic and obesogenic effects. BPA's adverse effects on reproduction are attributed to its ability to activate estrogen receptors (ERs), but its effects on metabolism and its mechanism(s) of action at low doses are so far only marginally understood. Metabolomics based approaches are increasingly used in toxicology to investigate the biological changes induced by model toxicants and chemical mixtures, to identify markers of toxicity and biological effects. In this study, we used proton nuclear magnetic resonance (<sup>1</sup>H-NMR) based untargeted metabolite profiling, followed by multivariate statistics and computational analysis of metabolic networks to examine the metabolic modulation induced in human hepatic cells (HepG2) by an exposure to low and very low doses of BPA (10<sup>−6</sup>M, 10<sup>−9</sup>M, and 10<sup>−12</sup>M), vs. the female reference hormone 17ÎČ-estradiol (E2, 10<sup>−9</sup>M, 10<sup>−12</sup>M, and 10<sup>−15</sup>M). Metabolomic analysis combined to metabolic network reconstruction highlighted different mechanisms at lower doses of exposure. At the highest dose, our results evidence that BPA shares with E2 the capability to modulate several major metabolic routes that ensure cellular functions and detoxification processes, although the effects of the model xeno-estrogen and of the natural hormone can still be distinguished.</p

    SHOWMe: Benchmarking Object-agnostic Hand-Object 3D Reconstruction

    Recent hand-object interaction datasets show limited real object variability and rely on fitting the MANO parametric model to obtain groundtruth hand shapes. To go beyond these limitations and spur further research, we introduce the SHOWMe dataset which consists of 96 videos, annotated with real and detailed hand-object 3D textured meshes. Following recent work, we consider a rigid hand-object scenario, in which the pose of the hand with respect to the object remains constant during the whole video sequence. This assumption allows us to register sub-millimetre-precise groundtruth 3D scans to the image sequences in SHOWMe. Although simpler, this hypothesis makes sense in terms of applications where the required accuracy and level of detail is important eg., object hand-over in human-robot collaboration, object scanning, or manipulation and contact point analysis. Importantly, the rigidity of the hand-object systems allows to tackle video-based 3D reconstruction of unknown hand-held objects using a 2-stage pipeline consisting of a rigid registration step followed by a multi-view reconstruction (MVR) part. We carefully evaluate a set of non-trivial baselines for these two stages and show that it is possible to achieve promising object-agnostic 3D hand-object reconstructions employing an SfM toolbox or a hand pose estimator to recover the rigid transforms and off-the-shelf MVR algorithms. However, these methods remain sensitive to the initial camera pose estimates which might be imprecise due to lack of textures on the objects or heavy occlusions of the hands, leaving room for improvements in the reconstruction.     Cet article a comme objectif comprendre la construction du corps par le bodybuilding. Il s’agit d’une Ă©tude de terrain qui a permis d’interviewer des bodybuilders du nord-est du BrĂ©sil. Des entretiens de type semi-structurĂ© ont Ă©tĂ© rĂ©alisĂ©s avec un Ă©chantillon de huit hommes et deux femmes. Nous avons procĂ©dĂ© Ă  une analyse de contenu des entretiens. Les rĂ©sultats ont permis d’identifier des usages diffĂ©renciĂ©s du bodybuilding en lien avec les expĂ©riences passĂ©es du corps, les modes d’engagement et le sexe.     Graph neural networks for communication networks: context, use cases and opportunities

    Graph neural networks (GNN) have shown outstanding applications in fields where data is essentially represented as graphs (e.g., chemistry, biology, recommendation systems). In this vein, communication networks comprise many fundamental components that are naturally represented in a graph-structured manner (e.g., topology, routing, signal interference). This position article presents GNNs as a fundamental tool for modeling, control and management of communication networks. GNNs represent a new generation of data-driven models that can accurately learn and reproduce the complex behaviors behind real-world networks. As a result, these models can be applied to a wide variety of networking use cases, such as planning, online optimization, or troubleshooting. The main advantage of GNNs over traditional neural networks lies in their unprecedented generalization capabilities when applied to other networks and configurations unseen during training. This is a critical feature for achieving practical data-driven solutions for networking. This article starts with a brief tutorial on GNNs and some potential applications to communication networks. Then, it presents two state-of-the-art GNN models respectively applied to wired and wireless networks. Lastly, it delves into the key open challenges and opportunities yet to be explored in this novel research area.This publication is part of the Spanish I+D+i project TRAINER-A (ref. The GMO Panel has previously assessed the three single events combined to produce this three-event stack maize and did not identify safety concerns. No new data on the single events, leading to modification of the original conclusions on their safety, were identified. Based on the molecular, agronomic, phenotypic and compositional characteristics, the combination of the single maize events and of the newly expressed proteins in the three-event stack maize did not give rise to issues regarding food and feed safety or nutrition. In the case of accidental release of viable grains of maize MON 87427 9 MON 89034 9 NK603 into the environment, the three-event stack maize would not raise environmental safety concerns. The GMO Panel concludes that the threeevent stack maize is as safe and as nutritious as the non-GM comparator and the tested non-GM reference varieties in the context of its scope. The GMO Panel considered that its previous conclusions on the two-event stack maize MON 89034 9 NK603 remain valid. For the two maize subcombinations for which no experimental data were provided the GMO Panel assessed the likelihood of interactions among the single events, and concluded that their combination would not raise safety concerns. These two subcombinations are therefore expected to be as safe as the single events, the previously assessed maize MON 89034 9 NK603 and maize MON 87427 9 MON 89034 9 NK603. Since the post-market environmental monitoring plan for the three-event stack maize does not include any provisions for the two subcombinations not previously assessed, the GMO Panel recommended the applicant to revise the plan accordingly

    Optical Orientation and Inverse Spin Hall Effect as Effective Tools to Investigate Spin-Dependent Diffusion

    In this work we address optical orientation, a process consisting in the excitation of spin polarized electrons across the gap of a semiconductor. We show that the combination of optical orientation with spin-dependent scattering leading to the inverse spin-Hall effect, i.e., to the conversion of a spin current into an electrical signal, represents a powerful tool to generate and detect spin currents in solids. We consider a few examples where these two phenomena together allow addressing the spin-dependent transport properties across homogeneous samples or metal/semiconductor Schottky junctions

    Maize MON 89034 × 1507 × MON 88017 × 59122 × DAS‐40278‐9 (five‐event stack maize) was produced by conventional crossing to combine five single events: MON 89034, 1507, MON 88017, 59122 and DAS‐40278‐9. The GMO Panel previously assessed the 5 single maize events and 11 of their subcombinations and did not identify safety concerns. No new data on the single maize events or their 11 subcombinations that could modify the original conclusions on their safety were identified. The molecular characterisation, comparative analysis (agronomic, phenotypic and compositional characteristics) and the outcome of the toxicological, allergenicity and nutritional assessment indicates that the combination of the single maize events and of the newly expressed proteins in the five‐event stack maize does not give rise to food and feed safety and nutritional concerns. The GMO Panel concludes that the five‐event stack maize, as described in this application, is as safe as and nutritionally equivalent to its non‐GM comparator and the non‐GM reference varieties tested. In the case of accidental release of the five‐event stack maize into the environment, this would not raise environmental safety concerns. The GMO Panel assessed the likelihood of interactions among the single events in the 14 maize subcombinations for which no experimental data were provided, and concludes that they are expected to be as safe as and nutritionally equivalent to the single events, the previously assessed subcombinations and the five‐event stack maize. The post‐market environmental monitoring plan and reporting intervals are in line with the intended uses of the five‐event stack maize. No post‐market monitoring of food/feed is considered necessary. The GMO Panel concludes that the five‐event stack maize and its subcombinations are as safe as its non‐GM comparator and the tested non‐GM reference varieties with respect to potential effects on human and animal health and the environment

    Transapical Mitral Valve Replacement: 1-Year Results of the Real-World Tendyne European Experience Registry.

    BACKGROUND Early studies of the Tendyne transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) showed promising results in a small selective cohort. OBJECTIVES The authors present 1-year data from the currently largest commercial, real-world cohort originating from the investigator-initiated TENDER (Tendyne European Experience) registry. METHODS All patients from the TENDER registry eligible for 1-year follow-up were included. The primary safety endpoint was 1-year cardiovascular mortality. Primary performance endpoint was reduction of mitral regurgitation (MR) up to 1 year. RESULTS Among 195 eligible patients undergoing TMVR (median age 77 years [Q1-Q3: 71-81 years], 60% men, median Society of Thoracic Surgeons Predicted Risk of Mortality 5.6% [Q1-Q3: 3.6%-8.9%], 81% in NYHA functional class III or IV, 94% with MR 3+/4+), 31% had "real-world" indications for TMVR (severe mitral annular calcification, prior mitral valve treatment, or others) outside of the instructions for use. The technical success rate was 95%. The cardiovascular mortality rate was 7% at 30 day and 17% at 1 year (all-cause mortality rates were 9% and 29%, respectively). Reintervention or surgery following discharge was 4%, while rates of heart failure hospitalization reduced from 68% in the preceding year to 25% during 1-year follow-up. Durable MR reduction to ≀1+ was achieved in 98% of patients, and at 1 year, 83% were in NYHA functional class I or II. There was no difference in survival and major adverse events between on-label use and "real-world" indications up to 1 year. CONCLUSIONS This large, real-world, observational registry reports high technical success, durable and complete MR elimination, significant clinical benefits, and a 1-year cardiovascular mortality rate of 17% after Tendyne TMVR. Outcomes were comparable between on-label use and "real-world" indications, offering a safe and efficacious treatment option for patients without alternative treatments.     Statement complementing the EFSA Scientific Opinion on application (EFSA-GMO-UK-2006-34) for authorisation of food and feed containing, consisting of and produced from genetically modified maize 3272

    Following a request from the European Commission, the GMO Panel assessed additional information related to the application for authorisation of food and feed containing, consisting of and produced from genetically modified (GM) maize 3272 (EFSA-GMO-UK-2006-34). The applicant conducted new agronomic, phenotypic and compositional analysis studies on maize 3272 and assessed the allergenic potential of AMY797E protein, addressing elements that remained inconclusive from previous EFSA opinion issued in 2013. The GMO Panel is of the opinion that the agronomic and phenotypic characteristics as well as forage and grain composition of maize 3272 do not give rise to food and feed safety, and nutritional concerns when compared to non-GM maize. Considering the scope of this application and the characteristics of the trait introduced in this GM maize, the effect of processing and potential safety implications of specific food or feed products remain to be further investigated. Regarding the allergenic potential of AMY797E protein and considering all possible food and feed uses of maize 3272, the Panel concludes that the information provided does not fully address the concerns previously raised by the Panel in 2013. Owing to the nature and the knowledge available on this protein family, it is still unclear whether under specific circumstances the alpha-amylase AMY797E has the capacity to sensitise certain individuals and to cause adverse effects. To further support the safety of specific products of maize 3272, the applicant provided thorough information relevant for the allergenicity assessment of dried distiller grains with solubles (DDGS), which is the main product of interest for importation into the EU. Having considered the information provided on this product, the Panel is of the opinion that under the specific conditions of use described by the applicant, DDGS produced from maize 3272 does not raise concerns when compared to DDGS from non-GM maize
