Amperometric tyrosinase based biosensor using an electrogenerated polythiophene film as an entrapment support

International audienceAn amperometric enzyme sensor using tyrosinase, also called polyphenol oxidase (PPO), was constructed for determination of phenolic compounds and herbicides. The enzyme was entrapped in a conducting polymer, poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDT), electrochemically generated on a glassy carbon electrode. Several experimental parameters in the electropolymerisation process and working conditions were determined to optimise biosensor performances. Mono-phenol and di-phenol were tested in oxygenated solutions, by amperometric measurements at −200 mV (vs. SCE) in a batch system. The limit of detection of these molecules ranges from 5 to 500 nM. Detection of herbicides was obtained from the inhibition of tyrosinase electrode responses. The limit of detection for atrazine and diuron was 1 and 0.5 mg l−1 respectively. These data suggest that PEDT film is a promising PPO immobilisation method

A novel stochastic optimization method for handling misalignments of proton and photon doses in combined treatments

Objective.Combined proton-photon treatments, where most fractions are delivered with photons and only a few are delivered with protons, may represent a practical approach to optimally use limited proton resources. It has been shown that, when organs at risk (OARs) are located within or near the tumor, the optimal multi-modality treatment uses protons to hypofractionate parts of the target volume and photons to achieve near-uniform fractionation in dose-limiting healthy tissues, thus exploiting the fractionation effect. These plans may be sensitive to range and setup errors, especially misalignments between proton and photon doses. Thus, we developed a novel stochastic optimization method to directly incorporate these uncertainties into the biologically effective dose (BED)-based simultaneous optimization of proton and photon plans.Approach.The method considers the expected valueEband standard deviationσbof the cumulative BEDbin every voxel of a structure. For the target, a piecewise quadratic penalty function of the formbmin-Eb-2σb+2is minimized, aiming for plans in which the expected BED minus two times the standard deviation exceeds the prescribed BEDbmin.Analogously,Eb+2σb-bmax+2is considered for OARs.Main results.Using a spinal metastasis case and a liver cancer patient, it is demonstrated that the novel stochastic optimization method yields robust combined treatment plans. Tumor coverage and a good sparing of the main OARs are maintained despite range and setup errors, and especially misalignments between proton and photon doses. This is achieved without explicitly considering all combinations of proton and photon error scenarios.Significance.Concerns about range and setup errors for safe clinical implementation of optimized proton-photon radiotherapy can be addressed through an appropriate stochastic planning method

A Influência dos Valores Organizacionais no Desempenho de Agências Bancárias

This paper aimed to investigate the influence organizational values at bank branches have on bank branchperformance. The research was undertaken at branches of a Brazilian publicly held bank. The questionnairecalled Inventário de Perfis de Valores Organizacionais (IPVO, or Inventory of Organizational Values Profiles)was adapted to measure the organizational values of bank branches. Bank branch performance was measuredobjectively, using the percentage of goals accomplished during the year 2009. The sample is non-probabilisticand is formed by 271 bank branches and the data about the organizational values of bank branches was providedby 720 respondents. Data analysis revealed that the organizational values of bank branches are organized intofour factors: respect for stakeholders, employee entertainment, competent performance, and prestige. Prestige ispositively correlated with bank branch performance, and respect for stakeholders and employee entertainmentare negatively correlated with the dependent variable. The multiple regression analysis yielded an equation thataccounts for 9.5% of the variance in performance and contains two factors as independent variables whichpositively influence bank branch performance: prestige and competent performance. The results showed thatorganizational values are one of the variables that can impact bank branch performance

Os desafios políticos para a educação e democracia na América Latina

We highlight in this dossier, among the issues that bring Latin American countries together, the political challenges surrounding the provision of education and the strengthening of democracy, and the reflection of the adoption of political measures that lead to a high percentage of indigence and poverty in most countries of the region. The political-economic agenda was built on the tension from two different perspectives, the implementation of neoliberal and conservative policies, bumps into collective organization to resist exclusion and propose different social projects. It is in this context, increasingly fierce in terms of conflicts and struggles, that reflections are needed on various aspects that shape our reality, such as education and the strengthening of democracy. It is along these lines that we are interested in the connection between education and other areas of social life, such as: education and work, education and citizenship, education and teaching work, education and evaluation, education and international organizations; among others. This is how we present reflections on different perspectives that problematize some aspects of educational policies and practices in the region. Sexualidad y juventud: experiencias y repercusiones

Este estudo teve por objetivo buscar qualitativamente a compreensão das percepções das experiencias vividas por jovens de ambos os sexos acerca das relações amorosas e sexuais, buscando avaliar os impactos dessas experiencias na vida destes jovens. O estudo contou com uma abordagem qualitativa realizada com sessenta participantes, com idades entre 14 e 20 anos, que frequentavam duas escolas públicas de educação secundária da região sul do município de São Paulo. Os dados foram recolhidos por meio da aplicação da técnica de grupo focal e analisado segundo o método de análise de conteúdo, do tipo análise categorial. Os resultados foram categorizados e organizados em três temas: incursões no campo amoroso, iniciação sexual e impacto na vida. Concluiu-se que apesar de tratar-se de um estudo limitado, produziu um conteúdo denso e significativo acerca das experiências amorosas e sexuais e suas consequências na vida desses jovens, o que, acreditamos, contribuirá para as discussões sobre o tema e novos estudosThe objective of the study is to qualitatively search for the understanding of the perceptions of experiences experienced by young people of both sexes in terms of love and sexual relationships, seeking to evaluate the impacts of these experiences in their lives. The study adopted a qualitative approach, made with 60 participants, aged between 14 and 20 years old, who attended two public high schools in the southern region of the municipality of São Paulo / Brazil. The data were collected using the strategy of the focus group and analyzed through the method of content analysis, type categorical analysis. The results were categorized and their organization made into three themes: incursions in the love field, sexual initiation and the impact on life. At the end of the study, it was concluded that even if it had limitations, it contributed rich and significant content in terms of the love and sexual experiences and consequences in the lives of young people, what will contribute to the discussions on the subject and in new studies.Este estudio tuvo por objetivo buscar cualitativamente la comprensión de las percepciones de las experiencias vividas por jóvenes de ambos sexos acerca de las relaciones amorosas y sexuales, buscando evaluar los impactos de esas experiencias en la vida de esos jóvenes. El estudio contó con un abordaje cualitativo realizado con sesenta participantes, con edades entre 14 y 20 años, que frecuentaban dos escuelas públicas de educación secundaria de la región sur del municipio de São Paulo. Los datos fueron recogidos por medio de la aplicación de la técnica de grupo focal y analizados por el método de análisis de contenido, del tipo análisis categorial. Los resultados fueron categorizados y  organizados en tres temas: incursiones en el campo amoroso, iniciación sexual e impacto en la vida. Se concluyó que a pesar de tratarse de un estudio limitado, produjo un contenido denso y significativo acerca de las experiencias amorosas y sexuales y consecuencias en la vida de esos jóvenes, que contribuirá para discusiones sobre el tema y nuevos estudios

Metabolomics: moving towards personalized medicine

In many fields of medicine there is a growing interest in characterizing diseases at molecular level with a view to developing an individually tailored therapeutic approach. Metabolomics is a novel area that promises to contribute significantly to the characterization of various disease phenotypes and to the identification of personal metabolic features that can predict response to therapies. Based on analytical platforms such as mass spectrometry or NMR-based spectroscopy, the metabolomic approach enables a comprehensive overview of the metabolites, leading to the characterization of the metabolic fingerprint of a given sample. These metabolic fingerprints can then be used to distinguish between different disease phenotypes and to predict a drug's effectiveness and/or toxicity

La obra es el resultado del trabajo de un equipo de arquitectos nacionales y surge de un Concurso público de Anteproyectos, cuyo resultado se conoció hacia mediados de 1993. La convocatoria fue realizada por la Comisión Ejecutiva del Memorial al Holocausto del Pueblo Judío, Comisión integrada en forma honoraria por personas de la colectividad judía del Uruguay. La iniciativa contó además con el apoyo del Gobierno Nacional y de la Intendencia Municipal de Montevideo que cedió el predio en el cual se implanta.Facultad de Arquitectura y Urbanism
