A limitation of the hydrostatic reconstruction technique for Shallow Water equations

    Get PDF
Because of their capability to preserve steady-states, well-balanced schemes for Shallow Water equations are becoming popular. Among them, the hydrostatic reconstruction proposed in Audusse et al. (2004), coupled with a positive numerical flux, allows to verify important mathematical and physical properties like the positivity of the water height and, thus, to avoid unstabilities when dealing with dry zones. In this note, we prove that this method exhibits an abnormal behavior for some combinations of slope, mesh size and water height.Comment: 7 page

Interpersonal Comparisons of Utility in Bargaining: Evidence from a Transcontinental Ultimatum Game

    Get PDF
This paper presents the experimental results of a “Transcontinental Ultimatum Game” implemented between India and France. The bargaining took the form of standard ultimatum games, but in one treatment Indian subjects made offers to French subjects and, in another treatment, French subjects made offers to Indian subjects. We observed that French→Indian bargaining mostly ended up with unequal splits of money in favour of French, while nearly equal splits were the most frequent outcome in Indian→French interactions. The experimental results are organized through a standard social reference model, modified for taking into account the different marginal value of money for bargainers. In our model bargaining is driven by relative standings comparisons between players, occurring in terms of real earnings (that is monetary earnings corrected for a purchasing power factor) obtained in the game. The norm of equity behind the equalization of real earnings is called local equity norm, and contrasted to a global equity norm which would encompass the wealth of players beyond the game. According to what we observed, no beyond-game concern seems to be relevantly endorsed by subjects.Interpersonal Comparisons of Utility; Fairness; Bargaining experiment; Ultimatum Game

Uncovering Causality from Multivariate Hawkes Integrated Cumulants

    Get PDF
We design a new nonparametric method that allows one to estimate the matrix of integrated kernels of a multivariate Hawkes process. This matrix not only encodes the mutual influences of each nodes of the process, but also disentangles the causality relationships between them. Our approach is the first that leads to an estimation of this matrix without any parametric modeling and estimation of the kernels themselves. A consequence is that it can give an estimation of causality relationships between nodes (or users), based on their activity timestamps (on a social network for instance), without knowing or estimating the shape of the activities lifetime. For that purpose, we introduce a moment matching method that fits the third-order integrated cumulants of the process. We show on numerical experiments that our approach is indeed very robust to the shape of the kernels, and gives appealing results on the MemeTracker database

VtkSMP: Task-based Parallel Operators for VTK Filters

    Get PDF
International audienceNUMA nodes are potentially powerful but taking benefit of their capabilities is challenging due to their architec- ture (multiple computing cores, advanced memory hierarchy). They are nonetheless one of the key components to enable processing the ever growing amount of data produced by scientific simulations. In this paper we study the parallelization of patterns commonly used in VTK algorithms and propose a new multi- threaded plugin for VTK that eases the development of parallel multi-core VTK filters. We specifically focus on task-based approaches and show that with a limited code refactoring effort we can take advantage of NUMA node capabilities. We experiment our patterns on a transform filter, base isosurface extraction filter and a min/max tree accelerated isosurface extraction. We support 3 programming environments, OpenMP, Intel TBB and X-KAAPI, and propose different algorithmic refinements according to the capabilities of the target environment. Results show that we can speed execution up to 30 times on a 48-core machine

La dynamique fait son cinéma : De l'apport de l'imagerie et des mesures de champs cinématiques pour l'analyse du comportement dynamique des matériaux

    Get PDF

Stereotactic body radiation therapy for abdominal oligometastases: a biological and clinical review

    Get PDF
Advances in imaging and biological targeting have led to the development of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) as an alternative treatment of extracranial oligometastases. New radiobiological concepts, such as ceramide-induced endothelial apoptosis after hypofractionated high-dose SBRT, and the identification of patients with oligometastatic disease by microRNA expression may yet lead to further developments. Key factors in SBRT are delivery of a high dose per fraction, proper patient positioning, target localisation, and management of breathing–related motion. Our review addresses the radiation doses and schedules used to treat liver, abdominal lymph node (LN) and adrenal gland oligometastases and treatment outcomes. Reported local control (LC) rates for liver and abdominal LN oligometastases are high (median 2-year actuarial LC: 61 -100% for liver oligometastases; 4-year actuarial LC: 68% in a study of abdominal LN oligometastases). Early toxicity is low-to-moderate; late adverse effects are rare. SBRT of adrenal gland oligometastases shows promising results in the case of isolated lesions. In conclusion, properly conducted SBRT procedures are a safe and effective treatment option for abdominal oligometastases

Overland flow modelling with the Shallow Water Equation using a well balanced numerical scheme: Adding efficiency or just more complexity?

    Get PDF
In the last decades, more or less complex physically-based hydrological models, have been developed that solve the shallow water equations or their approximations using various numerical methods. Model users may not necessarily know the different hypothesis lying behind these development and simplifications, and it might therefore be difficult to judge if a code is well adapted to their objectives and test case configurations. This paper aims at comparing the predictive abilities of different models and evaluating potential gain by using advanced numerical scheme for modelling runoff. We present four different codes, each one based on either shallow water or kinematic waves equations, and using either finite volume or finite difference method. We compare these four numerical codes on different test cases allowing to emphasize their main strengths and weaknesses. Results show that, for relatively simple configurations, kinematic waves equations solved with finite volume method represent an interesting option. Nevertheless, as it appears to be limited in case of discontinuous topography or strong spatial heterogeneities, for these cases we advise the use of shallow water equations solved with the finite volume method

Emergence of ferromagnetism and Jahn-Teller distortion in low Cr-substituted LaMnO3

    Get PDF
The emergence of a ferromagnetic component in LaMnO3LaMnO_{3} with low Cr-for-Mn substitution has been studied by x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Mn and Cr K edges. The local magnetic moment strength for the Mn and Cr are proportional to each other and follows the macroscopic magnetization. The net ferromagnetic components of Cr3+Cr^{3+} and Mn3+Mn^{3+} are found antiferromagnetically coupled. Unlike hole doping by La site substitution, the inclusion of Cr3+Cr^{3+} ions up to x = 0.15 does not decrease the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion and consequently does not significantly affect the orbital ordering. This demonstrates that the emergence of the ferromagnetism is not related to JT weakening and likely arises from a complex orbital mixing.Comment: 5 figure
