The psychological-type profile of lay church leaders in Australia

    Get PDF
A sample of 845 lay church leaders (444 women and 401 men) from a range of 24 different denominations and movements (including house churches and independent churches) completed the Francis Psychological-Type Scales within the context of the 2006 Australian National Church Life Survey. The psychological-type profiles of these lay church leaders were almost identical to the type profiles of 1527 Australian churchgoers (936 women and 591 men) published in an earlier study by Robbins and Francis. The predominant types among female lay church leaders were ISFJ (21%), ESFJ (21%), and ISTJ (18%). The predominant types among male lay church leaders were ISTJ (28%), ISFJ (17%), ESTJ (13%), and ESFJ (12%). The SJ temperament accounted for 67% of the female lay church leaders and for 70% of the male lay church leaders. The strengths and weaknesses of the SJ leadership style are discussed

Quantum cascade laser light propagation through hollow silica waveguides

In this paper, the transmission characteristics of hollow silica waveguides with bore diameters of 300 and 1000 ÎĽm are investigated using a 7.8-ÎĽm quantum cascade laser system. We show that the bore diameter, coiling and launch conditions have an impact on the number of supported modes in the waveguide. Experimental verification of theoretical predictions is achieved using a thermal imaging camera to monitor output intensity distributions from waveguides under a range of conditions. The thermal imaging camera allowed for more detailed images than could be obtained with a conventionally used beam profiler. The results show that quasi-single-mode transmission is achievable under certain conditions although guided single-mode transmission in coiled waveguides requires a smaller bore diameter-to-wavelength ratio than is currently available. Assessment of mode population is made by investigating the spatial frequency content of images recorded at the waveguide output using Fourier transform techniques

Biaxial fatigue loading of notched composites

Thin walled, 2.54-cm (1-in.) diameter tubular specimens of T300/934 graphite/epoxy were fabricated and fatigue cycled in combinations of axial, torsional, and internal pressure loading. Two different four-ply layup configurations were tested: (0/90)S and (+ or - 45)S; all tubes contained a 0.48-cm (3/16-in.) diameter circular hole penetrating one wall midway along the tube length. S-N curves were developed to characterize fatigue behavior under pure axial, torsional, or internal pressure loading, as well as combined loading fatigue. A theory was developed based on the Hill plane stress model which enabled the S-N curve for combined stress states to be predicted from the S-N data for the uniaxial loading modes. Correlation of the theory with the experimental data proved to be remarkably good

Coupling between structure and liquids in a parallel stage space shuttle design

    Get PDF
A study was conducted to determine the influence of liquid propellants on the dynamic loads for space shuttle vehicles. A parallel-stage configuration model was designed and tested to determine the influence of liquid propellants on coupled natural modes. A forty degree-of-freedom analytical model was also developed for predicting these modes. Currently available analytical models were used to represent the liquid contributions, even though coupled longitudinal and lateral motions are present in such a complex structure. Agreement between the results was found in the lower few modes

Congregational bonding social capital and psychological type : an empirical enquiry among Australian churchgoers

    Get PDF
This study explores the variation in levels of bonding social capital experienced by individual churchgoers, drawing on data generated by the Australian National Church Life Survey, and employing a five-item measure of church-related bonding social capital. Data provided by 2065 Australian churchgoers are used to test the thesis that individual differences in bonding social capital are related to a psychological model of psychological types (employing the Jungian distinctions). The data demonstrated that higher levels of bonding social capital were found among extraverts (compared with introverts), among intuitive types (compared with sensing types) and among feeling types (compared with thinking types), but no significant differences were found between judging types and perceiving types

The Efficacy Of International Environmental Law: A Personal Reflection

Chapter 38 of the Agenda 21\u27 adopted by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development at Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 emphasizes the need for an enhanced and strengthened role of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the further development of international environmental law

Low-Metallicity Gas Clouds in a Galaxy Proto-Cluster at Redshift 2.38

We present high resolution spectroscopy of a QSO whose sight-line passes through the halo of a pair of elliptical galaxies at redshift 2.38. This pair of galaxies probably lies at the center of a galaxy proto-cluster, and is embedded in a luminous extended Ly-alpha nebula. The QSO sight-line intersects two small gas clouds within this halo. These clouds have properties similar to those of high velocity clouds (HVCs) seen in the halo of the Milky Way. The gas is in a cool (< 2 x 10^4 K) and at least 20% neutral phase, with metallicities in the range -3.0 < [Fe/H] < -1.1 and neutral hydrogen column densities of ~10^19.5 /cm^2. The origin of these clouds is unclear. The presence of low metallicity gas within this possible proto-cluster implies either that the intra-cluster medium has not been enriched with metals at this redshift, or the clouds are embedded within a hot, ionized, metal-rich gas phase.Comment: Accepted to appear in ApJ Letter
