Conditional implementation of asymmetrical universal quantum cloning machine
We propose two feasible experimental implementations of an optimal asymmetric
1->2 quantum cloning of a polarization state of photon. Both implementations
are based on a partial and optimal reverse of recent conditional symmetrical
quantum cloning experiments. The reversion procedure is performed only by a
local measurement of one from the clones and ancilla followed by a local
operation on the other clone. The local measurement consists only of a single
unbalanced beam splitter followed in one output by a single photon detector and
the asymmetry of fidelities in the cloning is controlled by a reflectivity of

Development of a container for handling, testing, and storing discrete microelectronic components
A container has been developed for handling, testing, burning-in, and storing discrete microelectronic components without removal from the protective package. The package was designed to accommodate the leadless inverted device and other carrier-mounted active devices and chip-type discrete resistors and capacitors. Before the indicated development, components were handled and tested in various ways, some of which resulted in damage or contamination. The basic design of the container utilizes precision machined printed circuit boards and chemically milled (photoetched) contact springs. Included in this design for protection is an O-ring-sealed cover. Methods of fabrication and limitations of the current hardware are presented. Current applications of and possible extensions to the technology are discussed
The politics of power, pleasure and prayer in the Eurovision Song Contest
Since the first annual Eurovision Song Contest in 1956, politics and popularity have intersected to influence the ways in which Eurovision songs have reflected the complex forms of European nationalism. With the Eurovision victory of Marija Šerifović’s ′Molitva′ at the 52nd Eurovision in Helsinki the politics of regionalism and nationalism fully enveloped Southeastern Europe, creating the impression that old and new European alignments, from Habsburg nostalgia to an emerging Balkan brotherhood, overwhelmed the criteria that would otherwise mean that the grand prix would go to the best song. Taking Marija Šerifović’s ′Molitva′ 2007 as a point of departure, this article examines the extremely complex set of networks that intersect at the Eurovision Song Contest and the national rituals and competitions that transform the power and pleasure driving European popular song in the twenty-first century
Continuous-variable quantum non-demolishing interaction at a distance
A feasible setup of continuous-variable (CV) quantum non-demolishing (QND)
interaction at a distance is proposed. If two distant experimentalists are able
to locally perform identical QND interactions then the proposed realization
requires only a single quantum channel and classical communication between
them. A possible implementation of the proposed setup in recent quantum optical
laboratories is discussed and an influence of Gaussian noise in the quantum
channel on a quality of the implementation is analyzed. An efficient
realization of the QND interaction at a distance can be a basic step to
possible distributed quantum CV experiments between the distant laboratories.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
New Results from NA49
We present recent results of the SPS experiment NA49 on production of strange
particles and event-by-event fluctuations of mean and of charged particle
ratios in central Pb+Pb collisions at various beam energies (40, 80, 158 AGeV)
as well as in different collisions at 158 AGeV, going from p+p over light-ion

Moisture absorption kinetics of FruitPad for packaging of fresh strawberry
This study analysed the moisture absorption kinetics of FruitPad embedded with different concentrations of fructose with further application of such pads in packaging of fresh strawberries. The FruitPad was exposed to different storage conditions (temperature and RH) and moisture absorption kinetics was gravimetrically determined over 5 days of storage. FruitPad with 30% fructose showed highest amount of moisture absorption (0.94 g of water/g of pad) at 20 °C and 100% RH. The Weibull model combined with the Flory-Huggins model adequately described changes in moisture content of the FruitPad with respect to storage time and humidity (R2 = 93–96%). The FruitPad containing fructose minimized in-package condensation compared to the pad without fructose. Weight loss of packaged strawberry was less than 0.9% which was much below the acceptable limit of 6% for strawberry
Nonclassical light from large ensemble of trapped ions
The vast majority of physical objects we are dealing with are almost
exclusively made of atoms. Due to their discrete level structure, single atoms
have proved to be emitters of light which is incompatible with the classical
description of electromagnetic waves. We demonstrate this incompatibility for
atomic fluorescence when scaling up the size of the source ensemble, which
consists of trapped atomic ions, by several orders of magnitude. The presented
measurements of nonclassical statistics on light unconditionally emitted from
ensembles containing up to more than a thousand ions promise further
scalability to much larger emitter numbers. The methodology can be applied to a
broad range of experimental platforms focusing on the bare nonclassical
character of single isolated emitters
