    Ménière’s Disease and Tinnitus

    Get PDF
Tinnitus is one of the Ménière’s disease clue symptoms, but by far less studied than vertigo or other types of dizziness. The typical Ménière’s tinnitus is a low pitched fluctuating one. Although controversial, cochlear Ménière’s disease may account for a tinnitus subtype, a fact that may impact on tinnitus diagnosis and treatment. Further studies focused on tinnitus are necessary to clarify at which extent Ménière’s disease may have a role in some types of chronic tinnitus

Positive Association between Tinnitus and Arterial Hypertension

Introduction: Tinnitus is the perception of noise in the absence of an external source and is considered by most authors as a multifactorial symptom. A systematic review concerning the association of tinnitus and systemic arterial hypertension retrieved suggestions of a positive association, but the articles included failed to perform a detailed analysis on the theme. Purpose: To analyze the presence of arterial hypertension in tinnitus and non-tinnitus patients, to analyze differences between tinnitus impact and psychoacoustic measurements in hypertensive and normotensive patients, and to evaluate the association between the presence of tinnitus and the diverse antihypertensive drugs employed. Materials and methods: This includes cross-sectional transversal study, comparing two groups of subjects (144 in the study group with tinnitus and 140 in the control group without tinnitus). Clinical, demographical, audiometrical, and psychoacoustics characteristics of the subjects were compared. Results: Hypertension prevalence in tinnitus subjects was 44.4% against 31.4% in subjects without tinnitus (p = 0.024). Positive associations with tinnitus were found with hypertension treatment with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (p = 0.006), tiazidic diuretics (p < 0.0001), potassium-sparing diuretics (p = 0.016), and calcium channels blockers (p = 0.004). Conclusion: There is an association between tinnitus and arterial hypertension. This association is particularly strong in older patients. Hypertension treatment with diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and calcium channels blockers were more prevalent in tinnitus patients, suggesting that an eventual ototoxicity of these drugs may be involved in tinnitus pathophysiology, a hypothesis that should be evaluated in further studies.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Univ Fed Sao Paulo, Otolaryngol, Sao Paulo, BrazilFac Med Valenca, Otolaryngol, Valenca, BrazilOtolaryngology, Universidade Federal de São Paulo, São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc

    Get PDF
[EN] This study addresses the historical trajectory of karate, particularly in relation to the processes that favored its inclusion as one of the five modalities that will debut at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. The literature review was the methodology used in this research. Several attempts and efforts were identified to enable karate to join as a sport in the Olympic Games. It was concluded that the agents (federation leaders, presidents, coaches and athletes) along with institutions (clubs, companies, government, among others) were involved in a process that aimed to meet the requirements of the International Olympic Committee. Thus, it is possible to observe various transformations in the development of this modality that shaped karate as it istoday, which has made it a rookie modality being conditioned by market interests

Redes sociais digitais no ensino de matemática: impressões de professores do ensino superior

    Get PDF

Temporal Variability of Soil CO2 Emission Contrasting Degraded and Managed Pasture in Brazil

AbstractGrazing areas represent the largest agricultural areas in Brazil, occupying more than 172 million hectares, about 20% of the agricultural land (IBGE, 2007). Despite the large areas of degraded pasture, little information exists about the temporal variation of soil properties including nutrients and soil carbon dynamic (Cerri et al., 2004). This study aimed to measure soil FCO2 from degraded and managed pasture areas, describing their temporal variability correlated to the environmental variables. Our study was carried out at two pasture areas located in Mococa city, São Paulo State Brazil. On March 04, 2013, 2 grids of 100 × 100 m with 102 samples points were installed in DP (Degraded pasture) and managed pasture (MP). Measurements of soil CO2 emissions (FCO2), soil temperature (Tsoil) and water content of soil (WCsoil) were initiated onMarch 12th, resulting 8 measuring days. Higher difference of emission between both areasoccurred during the first days, probably due to a huge precipitation influence (accumulated 80mm). In the first study day (12th), emission values were 8.73 ± 0.38 versus 4.47 ± 0.21μmol m-2 s-1, in DP and MP, respectively. In the last study day, March 19th, emissions in both areas were closer without remarkable rain influence (7.43 ± 0.54 and 5.98 ± 0.17μmol m-2 s-1). Total emission calculated by the area bellow the emission curves resulted 640.7 versus 440.0kg CO2-C ha-1 in DP and MP, respectively, corresponding to an additional emission of 200.6kg CO2-C ha-1 from DP or, 735.5kg CO2 released to the atmosphere, contributing to the Climate Change. The potential for soil C sequestration in pasture soils is strictly related to their management, and the rate and mechanism of soil C losses in pasture soils can affect this potential, with soils functioning as an atmospheric CO2 sinking or emitter

IDEB, avaliações externas e gestão educacional: percepções de gestores escolares sobre usos e implicações

    Get PDF
Portanto, identificamos diversos usos e implicações do Ideb e avaliações externas. Tomados em conjunto, nossos resultados corroboram a literatura educacional.

    Get PDF
Investigated the factors associated to the number of days of sick leave of federal civil servants in an educational institution and the values of their occupational indices in the period from 2014 to 2017. Data sociodemographic, occupational and sick leaves were obtained through documentary analysis of medical records and administrative systems. For analysis, we used the absolute and relative frequency and multiple linear regression. Calculated rate of absenteeism-illness, frequency index, severity index and the average duration of leaves, stratified by gender and job role. The sample of 5,115 events in the population of 1,104 servers confirmed the positive relationship between age of the server, the level of schooling of the role and mental and behavioral disorders   with the largest number of days of leaves. The female gender, live in the city where works, servers those did not have information on the marital status, technical-administrative job role and the public service time proved to be associated with fewer days of leave. The results presented show the relevance of absenteeism-illness in the context of federal public education and indicate the needs of interference in this sector regarding the organization of work and the health-disease process of their servers

Our aim in this study was to analyze: (i) the presence of the relative age effect (RAE) on the Brazilian elite female futsal athletes according to their team’s final position in the National Championship, and (ii) the relationship between the presence of the RAE and the athletes’ tactical individual performance. Participants were 77 female Brazilian elite futsal athletes that competed in the 2021 National Championship. Data included their dates of birth aggrupation by quartiles (Q1-Q4), their team’s final position in the National Championship, and their tactical individual performance indicators (time played, goals scored, assists, steals, shots on goal, unbalanced passes, and challenges won in 1vs1). Analyses of the overall sample indicated that RAE was not prevalent in this context since the observed birthdate distribution was not different from the expected one (p=.796). When the final placement in the championship was considered, the birthdate distributions were also not different from the expected for both the top-ranked (p=.572) and low-ranked (p=.679) team athletes. Regarding athletes’ tactical individual performance, no differences were found between the athletes with early and late birthdates for any of the variables analysed (p>.05). Our results suggest that RAE has no impact on this specific sport context, which should be interpreted as a positive factor since female futsal athletes seem to have the same chance of achieving the elite level in Brazil, regardless of their birthdates.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/
