Generator of Time Series of Rain Attenuation: Results of Parameter Extraction
Rain attenuation has a significant impact on the availability of millimeter wave communication systems. In order to dynamically simulate such radio systems, several generators of artificial time series of rain attenuation have been developed. This paper briefly describes the DLR channel model and presents the results of model parameter extraction from time series measured on terrestrial microwave paths in the Czech Republic
Incompatible Magnetic Order in Multiferroic Hexagonal DyMnO3
Magnetic order of the manganese and rare-earth lattices according to
different symmetry representations is observed in multiferroic hexagonal (h-)
DyMnO by optical second harmonic generation and neutron diffraction. The
incompatibility reveals that the 3d-4f coupling in the h-MnO system (
= Sc, Y, In, Dy - Lu) is substantially less developed than commonly expected.
As a consequence, magnetoelectric coupling effects in this type of split-order
parameter multiferroic that were previously assigned to a pronounced 3d-4f
coupling have now to be scrutinized with respect to their origin
Charge density waves enhance the electronic noise of manganites
The transport and noise properties of Pr_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} epitaxial thin
films in the temperature range from room temperature to 160 K are reported. It
is shown that both the broadband 1/f noise properties and the dependence of
resistance on electric field are consistent with the idea of a collective
electrical transport, as in the classical model of sliding charge density
waves. On the other hand, the observations cannot be reconciled with standard
models of charge ordering and charge melting. Methodologically, it is proposed
to consider noise-spectra analysis as a unique tool for the identification of
the transport mechanism in such highly correlated systems. On the basis of the
results, the electrical transport is envisaged as one of the most effective
ways to understand the nature of the insulating, charge-modulated ground states
in manganites.Comment: 6 two-column pages, 5 figure
Symmetry Analysis of Second Harmonic Generation at Surfaces of Antiferromagnets
Using group theory we classify the nonlinear magneto-optical response at
low-index surfaces of fcc antiferromagnets, such as NiO. Structures consisting
of one atomic layer are discussed in detail. We find that optical second
harmonic generation is sensitive to surface antiferromagnetism in many cases.
We discuss the influence of a second type of magnetic atoms, and also of a
possible oxygen sublattice distortion on the output signal. Finally, our
symmetry analysis yields the possibility of antiferromagnetic surface domain
imaging even in the presence of magnetic unit-cell doubling.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures incorporated. Accepted to Phys. Rev. B,

Qualitative and Quantitative Detection of Botulinum Neurotoxins from Complex Matrices: Results of the First International Proficiency Test
In the framework of the EU project EQuATox a first international proficiency test (PT) on the detection and quantification of BoNT was conducted. Sample materials included BoNT serotypes A, B and E spiked into buffer, milk, meat extract and serum. A variety of methods was applied by the participants combining different principles of detection, identification and quantification. Based on qualitative assays, 95% of all results reported were correct. Successful strategies for BoNT detection were based on a combination of complementary immunological, MS-based and functional methods or on suitable functional in vivo / in vitro approaches (mouse bioassay, hemidiaphrama assay, Endopep-MS assay). Quantification of BoNT/A, BoNT/B and BoNT/E was performed by 48% of participating laboratories. It turned out that precise quantification of BoNT was difficult resulting in a substantial scatter of quantitative data. This was especially true for results obtained by the mouse bioassay which is currently seen as “gold standard” for BoNT detection. The results clearly demonstrate the urgent need of certified BoNT reference materials and the development of methods replacing animal testing. In this context, the BoNT PT provided the valuable information that both the Endopep-MS assay and the hemidiaphrama assay delivered quantitative results superior to the mouse bioassay.JRC.D.2-Standards for Innovation and sustainable Developmen
Mutual induction of magnetic 3d and 4f order in multiferroic hexagonal ErMnO3
The complex interplay between the 3d and 4f moments in hexagonal ErMnO3 is
investigated by magnetization, optical second harmonic generation, and
neutron-diffraction measurements. We revise the phase diagram and provide a
microscopic model for the emergent spin structures with a special focus on the
intermediary phase transitions. Our measurements reveal that the 3d exchange
between Mn^{3+} ions dominates the magnetic symmetry at 10 K < T < T_N with
Mn^3+ order according to the Gamma_4 representation triggering 4f ordering
according to the same representation on the Er^{3+}(4b) site. Below 10 K the
magnetic order is governed by 4f exchange interactions of Er^{3+} ions on the
2a site. The magnetic Er^{3+}(2a) order according to the representation Gamma_2
induces a magnetic reorientation (Gamma_4 --> Gamma_2) at the Er^{3+}(4b) and
the Mn^{3+} sites. Our findings highlight the fundamentally different roles the
Mn^{3+}, R^{3+}(2a), and R^{3+}(4b) magnetism play in establishing the magnetic
phase diagram of the hexagonal RMnO3 system
Coherent Acoustic Perturbation of Second-Harmonic-Generation in NiO
We investigate the structural and magnetic origins of the unusual ultrafast
second-harmonicgeneration (SHG) response of femtosecond-laser-excited nickel
oxide (NiO) previously attributed to oscillatory reorientation dynamics of the
magnetic structure induced by d-d excitations. Using time-resolved x-ray
diffraction from the (3/2 3/2 3/2) magnetic planes, we show that changes in the
magnitude of the magnetic structure factor following ultrafast optical
excitation are limited to = 1.5% in the first 30 ps. An
extended investigation of the ultrafast SHG response reveals a strong
dependence on wavelength as well as characteristic echoes, both of which give
evidence for an acoustic origin of the dynamics. We therefore propose an
alternative mechanism for the SHG response based on perturbations of the
nonlinear susceptibility via optically induced strain in a spatially confined
medium. In this model, the two observed oscillation periods can be understood
as the times required for an acoustic strain wave to traverse one coherence
length of the SHG process in either the collinear or anti-collinear geometries.Comment: 26 pages, 7 figure
Orbital ordering and enhanced magnetic frustration of strained BiMnO3 thin films
Epitaxial thin films of multiferroic perovskite BiMnO3 were synthesized on
SrTiO3 substrates, and orbital ordering and magnetic properties of the thin
films were investigated. The ordering of the Mn^{3+} e_g orbitals at a wave
vector (1/4 1/4 1/4) was detected by Mn K-edge resonant x-ray scattering. This
peculiar orbital order inherently contains magnetic frustration. While bulk
BiMnO3 is known to exhibit simple ferromagnetism, the frustration enhanced by
in-plane compressive strains in the films brings about cluster-glass-like
properties.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted to Europhysics Letter
