    Temperature and pressure behavior of the emission bands from Mn-, Cu-, and Eu-doped ZnS nanocrystals

    The Mn-, Cu- and Eu-doped ZnS nanocrystals (NC) were analyzed for temeperature and pressure dependence of photoluminescence. The thermal quenching behavior of characteristic emission bands reflected nature of different transition mechanisms. The energies of Mn-orange and Eu-green emissions were observed to be weakly dependent on temperature. The results show strong interaction between excited state of Eu2+ ions and conduction band of ZnS which was responsible for positive pressure coefficient.published_or_final_versio

    Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity in Maiduguri, North-Eastern Nigeria

    BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity is on the increase worldwide including in many developing countries. There is no report on the magnitude of obesity among adults in Maiduguri, a major city in northeastern Nigeria.MATERIALS and METHODS: We selected a sample of 1650 men and women aged 15 years and above resident in Gwange ward in Maiduguri metropolitan council using a multistage sampling technique. Height, weight, waist (WC) and hip circumferences were measured. Body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were calculated. Data were analyzed using SPSS version13. The ethics committee of the Universityof Maiduguri Teaching Hospital approved the study and consent was sought individually from the participants before being enlisted.RESULTS: The mean (SD) age of the respondents was 36.2 (14.4) years, with a range of 15 to 70 years. The mean (SD) ages of the males and  females were 34.9 (14.3) and 38.9 (14.0) years, respectively, (p<0.001). The overall crude prevalence rates of overweight and obesity were 27.1% and 17.1%, respectively. In men, 40.6% were either overweight or obese, while in women 51.9% were either overweight or obese. We observed thehighest prevalence rates of overweight and obesity in the middle age group. There were more obese females than males (14.05 vs. 4.3%) among both young and elderly (12.1% vs. 10.5%) subjects.CONCLUSION: The prevalence of overweight and obesity is high in Maiduguri metropolis particularly among women. Concerted efforts should be made to curb the menace of increasing rate of obesity in the metropolis through public enlightenment on the risks associated with obesity and the benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle.KEY WORDS: Overweight, Obesity, Prevalence, Maiduguri

    Protective Effects of Non-Anticoagulant Activated Protein C Variant (D36A/L38D/A39V) in a Murine Model of Ischaemic Stroke

    Ischaemic stroke is caused by occlusive thrombi in the cerebral vasculature. Although tissue-plasminogen activator (tPA) can be administered as thrombolytic therapy, it has major limitations, which include disruption of the blood-brain barrier and an increased risk of bleeding. Treatments that prevent or limit such deleterious effects could be of major clinical importance. Activated protein C (APC) is a natural anticoagulant that regulates thrombin generation, but also confers endothelial cytoprotective effects and improved endothelial barrier function mediated through its cell signalling properties. In murine models of stroke, although APC can limit the deleterious effects of tPA due to its cell signalling function, its anticoagulant actions can further elevate the risk of bleeding. Thus, APC variants such as APC(5A), APC(Ca-ins) and APC(36-39) with reduced anticoagulant, but normal signalling function may have therapeutic benefit. Human and murine protein C (5A), (Ca-ins) and (36-39) variants were expressed and characterised. All protein C variants were secreted normally, but 5-20% of the protein C (Ca-ins) variants were secreted as disulphide-linked dimers. Thrombin generation assays suggested reductions in anticoagulant function of 50- to 57-fold for APC(36-39), 22- to 27-fold for APC(Ca-ins) and 14- to 17-fold for APC(5A). Interestingly, whereas human wt APC, APC(36-39) and APC(Ca-ins) were inhibited similarly by protein C inhibitor (t½ - 33 to 39 mins), APC(5A) was inactivated ~9-fold faster (t½ - 4 mins). Using the murine middle cerebral artery occlusion ischaemia/repurfusion injury model, in combination with tPA, APC(36-39), which cannot be enhanced by its cofactor protein S, significantly improved neurological scores, reduced cerebral infarct area by ~50% and reduced oedema ratio. APC(36-39) also significantly reduced bleeding in the brain induced by administration of tPA, whereas wt APC did not. If our data can be extrapolated to clinical settings, then APC(36-39) could represent a feasible adjunctive therapy for ischaemic stroke

    Anthropometric correlates of insulin resistance: a study of healthy Nigerian adults in Maiduguri

    Indices of obesity, especially abdominal adiposity have been shown to correlate positively with the components of the metabolic syndrome in several studies. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between anthropometric indices and insulin resistance in healthy subjects. Methods: A representative sample of 100 subjects aged 15 to 70 years was recruited for the study. Weight, height, waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference were measured, while body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were calculated for each participant. Fasting blood samples were drawn for plasma glucose and plasma insulin concentrations, respectively. The values obtained were used to calculate insulin resistance using the Homeostasis Model Assessment Method for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR). Results: Insulin resistance (IR) was found in 25(25%) of the study subjects. There were significant andpositive correlations between waist circumference and HOMA-IR (r=+0.20, p<0.05), as well as between BMI and HOMA-IR(r=+0.19, p<0.05).Both anthropometric indices however, only predicted 4.1% and 3.9% of the variation in HOMA-IR, respectively. The correlation between WHR and HOMA-IR was positive but non-significant (r=+0.12, p>0.05). Conclusion: Waist circumference exhibited the strongest correlation with HOMA-IR, closely followed by BMI and WHR. We recommend that measurement of waist circumference should continue to be used as a screening tool for identifying individuals with insulin resistance in our setting

    Sri Lankan tsunami refugees: a cross sectional study of the relationships between housing conditions and self-reported health

    BACKGROUND: On the 26th December 2004 the Asian tsunami devastated the Sri Lankan coastline. More than two years later, over 14,500 families were still living in transitional shelters. This study compares the health of the internally displaced people (IDP), living in transitional camps with those in permanent housing projects provided by government and non-government organisations in Sri Lanka. METHODS: This study was conducted in seven transitional camps and five permanent housing projects in the south west of Sri Lanka. Using an interviewer-led questionnaire, data on the IDPs' self-reported health and housing conditions were collected from 154 participants from transitional camps and 147 participants from permanent housing projects. Simple tabulation with non-parametric tests and logistic regression were used to identify and analyse relationships between housing conditions and the reported prevalence of specific symptoms. RESULTS: Analysis showed that living conditions were significantly worse in transitional camps than in permanent housing projects for all factors investigated, except 'having a leaking roof'. Transitional camp participants scored significantly lower on self-perceived overall health scores than those living in housing projects. After controlling for gender, age and marital status, living in a transitional camp compared to a housing project was found to be a significant risk factor for the following symptoms; coughs OR: 3.53 (CI: 2.11-5.89), stomach ache 4.82 (2.19-10.82), headache 5.20 (3.09-8.76), general aches and pains 6.44 (3.67-11.33) and feeling generally unwell 2.28 (2.51-7.29). Within transitional camp data, the only condition shown to be a significant risk factor for any symptom was household population density, which increased the risk of stomach aches 1.40 (1.09-1.79) and headaches 1.33 (1.01-1.77). CONCLUSION: Internally displaced people living in transitional camps are a vulnerable population and specific interventions need to be targeted at this population to address the health inequalities that they report to be experiencing. Further studies need to be conducted to establish which aspects of their housing environment predispose them to poorer health

    Recognizing Speech in a Novel Accent: The Motor Theory of Speech Perception Reframed

    The motor theory of speech perception holds that we perceive the speech of another in terms of a motor representation of that speech. However, when we have learned to recognize a foreign accent, it seems plausible that recognition of a word rarely involves reconstruction of the speech gestures of the speaker rather than the listener. To better assess the motor theory and this observation, we proceed in three stages. Part 1 places the motor theory of speech perception in a larger framework based on our earlier models of the adaptive formation of mirror neurons for grasping, and for viewing extensions of that mirror system as part of a larger system for neuro-linguistic processing, augmented by the present consideration of recognizing speech in a novel accent. Part 2 then offers a novel computational model of how a listener comes to understand the speech of someone speaking the listener's native language with a foreign accent. The core tenet of the model is that the listener uses hypotheses about the word the speaker is currently uttering to update probabilities linking the sound produced by the speaker to phonemes in the native language repertoire of the listener. This, on average, improves the recognition of later words. This model is neutral regarding the nature of the representations it uses (motor vs. auditory). It serve as a reference point for the discussion in Part 3, which proposes a dual-stream neuro-linguistic architecture to revisits claims for and against the motor theory of speech perception and the relevance of mirror neurons, and extracts some implications for the reframing of the motor theory

    Principled Selection of Baseline Covariates to Account for Censoring in Randomized Trials with a Survival Endpoint

    The analysis of randomized trials with time-to-event endpoints is nearly always plagued by the problem of censoring. As the censoring mechanism is usually unknown, analyses typically employ the assumption of non-informative censoring. While this assumption usually becomes more plausible as more baseline covariates are being adjusted for, such adjustment also raises concerns. Pre-specification of which covariates will be adjusted for (and how) is difficult, thus prompting the use of data-driven variable selection procedures, which may impede valid inferences to be drawn. The adjustment for covariates moreover adds concerns about model misspecification, and the fact that each change in adjustment set, also changes the censoring assumption and the treatment effect estimand. In this paper, we discuss these concerns and propose a simple variable selection strategy that aims to produce a valid test of the null in large samples. The proposal can be implemented using off-the-shelf software for (penalized) Cox regression, and is empirically found to work well in simulation studies and real data analyses

    Bisphosphonates drugs target the skeleton and are used globally for the treatment of common bone disorders. Nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates act by inhibiting the mevalonate pathway in bone-resorbing osteoclasts but, surprisingly, also appear to reduce the risk of death from pneumonia. We overturn the long-held belief that these drugs act only in the skeleton and show that a fluorescently labelled bisphosphonate is internalised by alveolar macrophages and large peritoneal macrophages in vivo. Furthermore, a single dose of a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate (zoledronic acid) in mice was sufficient to inhibit the mevalonate pathway in tissue-resident macrophages, causing the build-up of a mevalonate metabolite and preventing protein prenylation. Importantly, one dose of bisphosphonate enhanced the immune response to bacterial endotoxin in the lung and increased the level of cytokines and chemokines in bronchoalveolar fluid. These studies suggest that bisphosphonates, as well as preventing bone loss, may boost immune responses to infection in the lung and provide a mechanistic basis to fully examine the potential of bisphosphonates to help combat respiratory infections that cause pneumonia

    Intraocular lenses in age-related macular degeneration

    Purpose: The aim of this work is to review the lenses, assessing their advantages and disadvantages. We describe a total of seven types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) recommended for age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: We used the PubMed web platform to search for implantable devices in various stages of AMD. We searched for both prospective and retrospective studies and also case reports. Results: Clinical results in AMD patients have been described for a total of seven types of IOLs recommended for AMD: an implantable miniature telescope (IMT), IOL-VIP System, Lipshitz macular implant (LMI), sulcus-implanted Lipshitz macular implant, LMI-SI, Fresnel Prism Intraocular Lens, iolAMD and Scharioth Macula Lens. Conclusions: We conclude that to objectively ascertain the effectiveness and safety of these lenses, further independent clinical studies with longer follow-up data are necessary prior to the general use of these optical devices
