    Diversity in the organization of elastin bundles and intramembranous muscles in bat wings

    Unlike birds and insects, bats fly with wings composed of thin skin that envelops the bones of the forelimb and spans the area between the limbs, digits, and sometimes the tail. This skin is complex and unusual; it is thinner than typical mammalian skin and contains organized bundles of elastin and embedded skeletal muscles. These elements are likely responsible for controlling the shape of the wing during flight and contributing to the aerodynamic capabilities of bats. We examined the arrangement of two macroscopic architectural elements in bat wings, elastin bundles and wing membrane muscles, to assess the diversity in bat wing skin morphology. We characterized the plagiopatagium and dactylopatagium of 130 species from 17 families of bats using cross‐polarized light imaging. This method revealed structures with distinctive relative birefringence, heterogeneity of birefringence, variation in size, and degree of branching. We used previously published anatomical studies and tissue histology to identify birefringent structures, and we analyzed their architecture across taxa. Elastin bundles, muscles, neurovasculature, and collagenous fibers are present in all species. Elastin bundles are oriented in a predominantly spanwise or proximodistal direction, and there are five characteristic muscle arrays that occur within the plagiopatagium, far more muscle than typically recognized. These results inform recent functional studies of wing membrane architecture, support the functional hypothesis that elastin bundles aid wing folding and unfolding, and further suggest that all bats may use these architectural elements for flight. All species also possess numerous muscles within the wing membrane, but the architecture of muscle arrays within the plagiopatagium varies among families. To facilitate present and future discussion of these muscle arrays, we refine wing membrane muscle nomenclature in a manner that reflects this morphological diversity.     Impact of wild-type and genetically modified Pseudomonas fluorescens on soil enzyme activities and microbial population structure in the rhizosphere of pea

The wild type F113 strain carried a gene encoding the production of the antibiotic 2,4 diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) useful in plant disease control, and was marked with a lacZY gene cassette. The first modified strain was a functional modification of strain F113 with repressed production of DAPG, creating the DAPG negative strain F113 G22. The second paired comparison was a non-functional modification of wild type (unmarked) strain SBW25, constructed to carry marker genes only, creating strain SBW25 EeZY-6KX. Significant perturbations were found in the indigenous bacterial population structure, with the F113, (DAPG+) strain causing a shift towards slower growing colonies (K strategists) compared with the non-antibiotic producing derivative (F113 G22) and the SBW25 strains. The DAPG+ strain also significantly reduced, in comparison with the other inocula, the total Pseudomonas populations but did not affect the total microbial populations. The survival of F113 and F113 G22 were an order of magnitude lower than the SBW 25 strains. The DAPG+ strain caused a significant decrease in the shoot to root ratio in comparison to the control and other inoculants, indicating plant stress. F113 increased soil alkaline phosphatase, phosphodiesterase and aryl sulphatase activities compared to the other inocula, which themselves reduced the same enzyme activities compared to the control. In contrast to this, the -glucosidase, -galactosidase and N-acetyl glucosaminidase activities decreased with the inoculation of the DAPG+ strain. These results indicate that soil enzymes are sensitive to the impact of GMM inoculation.Peer reviewe

    Resolving the so-called "probabilistic paradoxes in legal reasoning" with Bayesian networks

    Examples of reasoning problems such as the twins problem and poison paradox have been proposed by legal scholars to demonstrate the limitations of probability theory in legal reasoning. Specifically, such problems are intended to show that use of probability theory results in legal paradoxes. As such, these problems have been a powerful detriment to the use of probability theory – and particularly Bayes theorem – in the law. However, the examples only lead to ‘paradoxes’ under an artificially constrained view of probability theory and the use of the so-called likelihood ratio, in which multiple related hypotheses and pieces of evidence are squeezed into a single hypothesis variable and a single evidence variable. When the distinct relevant hypotheses and evidence are described properly in a causal model (a Bayesian network), the paradoxes vanish. In addition to the twins problem and poison paradox, we demonstrate this for the food tray example, the abuse paradox and the small town murder problem. Moreover, the resulting Bayesian networks provide a powerful framework for legal reasoning

    Data-driven analysis methods for the measurement of reconstructed jets in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC

    We present data-driven methods for the full reconstruction of jets in heavy ion collisions, for inclusive and co-incidence jet measurements at both RHIC and LHC. The complex structure of heavy ion events generates a large background of combinatorial jets, and smears the measured energy of the true hard jet signal. Techniques to correct for these background effects can induce biases in the reported jet distributions, which must be well controlled for accurate measurement of jet quenching. Using model studies, we evaluate the proposed methods for measuring jet distributions accurately while minimizing the fragmentation bias of the measured population.Comment: 5 pages, 14 figures, Hard Probe 2012 Conference Proceedin

    A scoping umbrella review to identify anti-racist interventions to reduce ethnic disparities in health and care

    Objectives: To identify anti-racist interventions which aim to reduce ethnic disparities in health and care. / Eligibility criteria for selecting studies: Only studies reporting systematic reviews of anti-racist interventions were included. Studies were excluded if no interventions were reported, no comparators reported, or the paper was primarily descriptive. / The following databases were searched: Embase, Medline, Social Policy and Practice, Social care online and Web of Science. Quality appraisal (including risk of bias) was assessed using the AMSTAR-2 tool. Due to the nature of the selected reviews, the lack of meta-analyses and heterogeneity of included studies, a narrative synthesis using an inductive thematic analysis approach was conducted to integrate and categorise the evidence on anti-racist interventions for health and care. / Results: A total of 18 systematic reviews are included in the final review. 15 are from the healthcare sector and three are from education and criminal justice. 17 reviews are focused on interventions and one focused on implementation. All 18 reviews described interventions which targeted individuals and their communities, and 11 reviews described interventions targeting both individuals and communities, and healthcare organisations. On an individual level, the most promising interventions reviewed include group-based health education led by professional staff and providing culturally tailored or adapted interventions. On a community level, participation in all aspects of care pathway development that empowers ethnic minority groups may provide an effective approach to reducing ethnic health disparities. Targeted interventions to improve clinician patient interactions and quality of care for conditions with disproportionately worse outcomes in ethnic minority groups show promise. / Discussion: Many of the included studies were low or critically low quality due to methodological or reporting limitations. The heterogeneity of intervention approaches, study designs, and limited reporting of cultural adaptation, implementation and lack of comparison with White ethnic groups limited our understanding of the impact on ethnic health inequalities. In summary, for programme delivery, different types of pathway integration and providing a more person-centred approach with fewer steps for patients to navigate can contribute to reducing disparities. For organisations, there is an overemphasis on patient education and individual behaviour change rather than organisational change, and recommendations should include a shift in focus and resources to policies and practices that seek to dismantle institutional and systemic racism through a multi-level approach
