    Hace treinta y cinco años que el autor y el homenajeado tienen pendiente una síntesis del tema de “la sangre acusadora”. En este homenaje se renuevan y amplían los argumentos ya usados, a los que se añaden otros, aumentando el corpus textual ahora mejor conocido. El discurso sigue la historia de la literatura española en sus registros culto y folclórico, incluidos los necesarios pasadizos hacia la literatura comparada. Termina, de momento, con una sección desde el humor, para animar al lector, porque la historia continúa. Thirty five years ago, the author and J. B. de Avalle-Arce started a written discussion on the Bahrprobe: “Corpse bleeds when murderer touches it”. The moment has arrived to use it as a token of friendship and appreciation. Alternating old and new arguments, well known texts and less known samples, the subject proceeds along a revision of the motif in Spanish Literature and Folklore, including different registers, and an exercise of Comparative Literature as well. A humorous reflection conveys a smile to the reader of this Festschrift. To be continued

    A numerical method for nonlinear age-structured population models with finite maximum age

    AbstractWe propose a new numerical method for the approximation of solutions to a non-autonomous form of the classical Gurtin–MacCamy population model with a mortality rate that is the sum of an intrinsic age-dependent rate that becomes unbounded as the age approaches its maximum value, plus a non-local, non-autonomous, bounded rate that depends on some weighted population size. We prove that our new quadrature based method converges to second-order and we show the results of several numerical simulations

    Critical radius for hot-jet ignition of hydrogen-air mixtures

    This study addresses deflagration initiation of lean and stoichiometric hydrogen–air mixtures by the sudden discharge of a hot jet of their adiabatic combustion products. The objective is to compute the minimum jet radius required for ignition, a relevant quantity of interest for safety and technological applications. For sufficiently small discharge velocities, the numerical solution of the problem requires integration of the axisymmetric Navier–Stokes equations for chemically reacting ideal-gas mixtures, supplemented by standard descriptions of the molecular transport terms and a suitably reduced chemical-kinetic mechanism for the chemistry description. The computations provide the variation of the critical radius for hot-jet ignition with both the jet velocity and the equivalence ratio of the mixture, giving values that vary between a few tens microns to a few hundred microns in the range of conditions explored. For a given equivalence ratio, the critical radius is found to increase with increasing injection velocities, although the increase is only moderately large. On the other hand, for a given injection velocity, the smallest critical radius is found at stoichiometric conditions

    Stereotactic radiosurgery for the treatment of recurrent high-grade gliomas: long-term follow-up

    High-grade gliomas (HGG) are the most frequent primary central nervous system tumors; treatment of HCGs includes surgery and post-operative conformal radiotherapy associated with temozolomide (TMZ or procarbazine/lomustine/vincristine [PCV], specifically in patients with anaplastic oligodendrogliomas or anaplastic oligoastrocytomas). However, recurrence is common. Re-irradiation has been utilized in this setting for years and remains a feasible option, although there is always a concern regarding toxicity. Modern high-precision conformal techniques, including stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), could improve the therapeutic ratio by delivering high biologically equivalent doses while reducing high-dose radiotherapy (RT) to normal brain tissue.     PDGF-BB serum levels are decreased in adult onset Pompe patients

    Adult onset Pompe disease is a genetic disorder characterized by slowly progressive skeletal and respiratory muscle weakness. Symptomatic patients are treated with enzymatic replacement therapy with human recombinant alfa glucosidase. Motor functional tests and spirometry are commonly used to follow patients up. However, a serological biomarker that correlates with the progression of the disease could improve follow-up. We studied serum concentrations of TGFβ, PDGF-BB, PDGF-AA and CTGF growth factors in 37 adult onset Pompe patients and 45 controls. Moreover, all patients performed several muscle function tests, conventional spirometry, and quantitative muscle MRI using 3-point Dixon. We observed a statistically significant change in the serum concentration of each growth factor in patients compared to controls. However, only PDGF-BB levels were able to differentiate between asymptomatic and symptomatic patients, suggesting its potential role in the follow-up of asymptomatic patients. Moreover, our results point to a dysregulation of muscle regeneration as an additional pathomechanism of Pompe disease
