Tracking quasi-classical chaos in ultracold boson gases

We study the dynamics of a ultra-cold boson gas in a lattice submitted to a constant force. We track the route of the system towards chaos created by the many-body-induced nonlinearity and show that relevant information can be extracted from an experimentally accessible quantity, the gas mean position. The threshold nonlinearity for the appearance of chaotic behavior is deduced from KAM arguments and agrees with the value obtained by calculating the associated Lyapunov exponent.Comment: 4 pages, revtex4, submitted to PR

Experimental and numerical study of crack healing in a nuclear glass

International audiencea b s t r a c t An experimental study of thermally or water-induced crack healing in an inactive borosil-icate glass, chemically analogous to that used in France for the vitrification of nuclear waste was carried out. Partial welding of glass plates was observed after annealing in air at 425 °C (77 °C below T g) when at least 20 MPa compressive stress was applied, while annealing at 450 °C under 20 MPa led to a complete disappearance of the interface. Closure of indenta-tion-induced cracks was observed during annealing at 400 °C in an ESEM as a result of viscous relaxation of residual stresses but it did not constitute a sufficient proof of crack healing. DCDC specimens were thus pre-cracked in an ESEM and then either annealed at various temperatures (350–490 °C) in secondary vacuum or in air, or left in water at 70–90 °C, sometimes under a compressive stress normal to the crack face. The specimens were then reloaded in the ESEM and the crack opening displacements under a given load were compared to those measured during pre-cracking. The cracks were bridged by an alteration layer over a distance from the crack tip which decreased as loading increased. The restraining effect of these bridges on crack opening was assessed via finite element simulations, using interface elements. The tensile strength of the bridging layer was estimated as 27–39 MPa after vacuum annealing at 400 °C, 11–20 MPa after 15 days in water at 90 °C and 44–78 MPa after 11 days in water at 70 °C under 5 MPa normal compression. Partially healed cracks did not resume propagation from their former crack tip, but due to branch cracks re-initiated a few hundred microns behind it which grow avoiding the healed area. This behaviour was explained using finite element simulations

Continuous-wave Doppler-cooling of hydrogen atoms with two-photon transitions

We propose and analyze the possibility of performing two-photon continuous-wave Doppler-cooling of hydrogen atoms using the 1S-2S transition. "Quenching" of the 2S level (by coupling with the 2P state) is used to increase the cycling frequency, and to control the equilibrium temperature. Theoretical and numerical studies of the heating effect due to Doppler-free two-photon transitions evidence an increase of the temperature by a factor of two. The equilibrium temperature decreases with the effective (quenching dependent) width of the excited state and can thus be adjusted up to values close to the recoil temperature.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures in eps forma

Combination of 13 C/ 113 Cd NMR, potentiometry, and voltammetry in characterizing the interactions between Cd and two models of the main components of soil organic matter

International audienceThis work allowed the characterization of the Cd-binding sites of two compounds taken as models for exudates, the main components of soil organic matter (SOM). The studied compounds were exopolysaccharides (EPS), specifically exudates of roots (polygalacturonic acid) and of soil bacteria (Phytagel). Potentiometric acid– base titrations were performed and fitting of the obtained results indicated the presence of two main classes of acidic sites, defined by their pK a values, for both EPS but of a different nature when comparing the two compounds. The two studied exopolysaccharides presented different acidic/ basic site ratios: 0.15 for Phytagel and 0.76 for polyga-lacturonic acid. Spectroscopic techniques (13 C/ 113 Cd NMR, FTIR) distinguished different Cd surroundings for each of the studied EPS, which is in agreement with the titration results. Furthermore, these analyses indicated the presence of –COOH and –OH groups in various proportions for each exopolysaccharide, which should be linked to their reactiv-ity towards cadmium. Cadmium titrations (voltammetric measurements) also differentiated different binding sites for each compound and allowed the determination of the strength of the Cd-binding site of the EPS. Fitting of the results of such voltammetric measurements was performed using PROSECE (Programme d'Optimisation et de Speci-ation Chimique dans l'Environnement), a software coupling chemical speciation calculation and binding parameter optimization. The fitting, taking into account the Cd 2+ /H

Atomic motion in tilted optical lattices

This paper presents a formalism describing the dynamics of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional, time-dependent, tilted lattice. The formalism uses the Wannier-Stark states, which are localized in each site of the lattice, and provides a simple framework allowing fully-analytical developments. Analytic solutions describing the particle motion are explicit derived, and the resulting dynamics is studied.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figs, submitted to EPJD, Springer Verlag styl

Language Emptiness of Continuous-Time Parametric Timed Automata

Parametric timed automata extend the standard timed automata with the possibility to use parameters in the clock guards. In general, if the parameters are real-valued, the problem of language emptiness of such automata is undecidable even for various restricted subclasses. We thus focus on the case where parameters are assumed to be integer-valued, while the time still remains continuous. On the one hand, we show that the problem remains undecidable for parametric timed automata with three clocks and one parameter. On the other hand, for the case with arbitrary many clocks where only one of these clocks is compared with (an arbitrary number of) parameters, we show that the parametric language emptiness is decidable. The undecidability result tightens the bounds of a previous result which assumed six parameters, while the decidability result extends the existing approaches that deal with discrete-time semantics only. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first positive result in the case of continuous-time and unbounded integer parameters, except for the rather simple case of single-clock automata

Theoretical analysis of quantum dynamics in 1D lattices: Wannier-Stark description

This papers presents a formalism describing the dynamics of a quantum particle in a one-dimensional tilted time-dependent lattice. The description uses the Wannier-Stark states, which are localized in each site of the lattice and provides a simple framework leading to fully-analytical developments. Particular attention is devoted to the case of a time-dependent potential, which results in a rich variety of quantum coherent dynamics is found.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PR

    Universal star products

One defines the notion of universal deformation quantization: given any manifold MM, any Poisson structure ¶\P on MM and any torsionfree linear connection ∇\nabla on MM, a universal deformation quantization associates to this data a star product on (M,¶)(M,\P) given by a series of bidifferential operators whose corresponding tensors are given by universal polynomial expressions in the Poisson tensor ¶\P, the curvature tensor RR and their covariant iterated derivatives. Such universal deformation quantization exist. We study their unicity at order 3 in the deformation parameter, computing the appropriate universal Poisson cohomology.Comment: To appear in Letters in Mathematical Physic
