    Stability Analysis of the Serchio River Flood Plain Embankments (Tuscany, Italy)

    Following the geotechnical characterization of 30 km long flood - plain embankments of the Serchio River (Tuscany – Italy), a number of numerical analyses have been carried out. The embankments have been constructed since the XVIII century and have experienced several failures in the years (the last in December 2009). The geotechnical characterization of the river embankments and the 2009 flood are described in a companion paper in this Conference. This paper shows the results of numerical analyses that have been carried out for various purposes. More specifically, the numerical analyses were carried out a) to clarify the causes of the December 2009 failures, b) to design appropriate repair of the failures and retrofit of the embankments in proximity of the failures (about 6 km) and c) to identify the most risk areas considering the whole extension of the embankments (30 km). The limit equilibrium method was used to assess the stability of the embankments under steady state flow conditions (areas close to the failures). For this analysis three different types of commercial software were used. The stability analyses were carried out using the Bishop simplified method with circular sliding surfaces. The different codes indicated very similar failure surfaces corresponding to the minimum (meaningful) values of the global safety factor. Some differences on the values of the global safety factor were observed by comparing the results obtained from the three codes. More specifically, the analyses results show that, for the selected cross sections, the safety factors are rather small and approaching to unity, if the seepage forces are not considered. In the case of steady state flow, safety factor drastically reduces becoming lower than one. This result apparently contradicts the fact that the considered embankments are standing up since centuries and failures occurred only in the occasion of floods. The FEM analysis (PLAXIS Flow) shows that the safety margins of the considered sections, in absence of filtration, are assigned to the partial saturation of the embankment. Unfortunately, an appropriate characterization of the material under conditions of partial saturation was not available. Therefore, the FEM analyses were also aimed at determining the necessary time to approach the steady state flow conditions. For the case under consideration it was estimated that 10 days are necessary to approach the steady state flow conditions. This time is apparently much longer than the duration of the longest flood event (few hours). From the above it is possible to conclude that the hypothesis of permanent flow is generally too cautious. Anyway for the failures under consideration, that have occurred with the concurrence of various adverse factors like the melting of the snow because of a sudden temperature increase and the contemporary long raining period (two consecutive floods), it is reasonable to assume that the permanent flow conditions were probably reached. In addition to the numerical analyses, evidences of the considered event and the susceptibility of the analyzed soil to piping phenomena have also been considered to find out all the possible causes and to design in an appropriate way both repair of the failures and retrofitting of the surrounding areas. Assessment of the most risky areas, considering the whole extension of the embankments (30 km), has been carried out following expeditious criteria which were based on the embankment geometry and the mechanical soil characteristics

    The flood plain embankments of the Serchio river have been constructed since the XVIII century and construction details are not known. These embankments have experienced failures several times during their life (last in December 2009). After the last event a detailed geotechnical investigation has been carried out. This paper discusses the necessary criteria for a cost – effective campaign considering the total length of the embankments (30 km) and the requested level of detail. In fact levee failure, although it is of limited extension, causes the achievement of the ultimate limit state of the entire embankment system. The campaign, in addition to laboratory tests, included boreholes, CPTu, permeability tests, 2D geo-electric tomography and 15 tests performed by the use of the continuous core drilling system. This last has proved to be a very useful tool for obtaining the more accurate evaluation of the in situ soil density (as confirmed by CPTu results). CPTu test, economical and expeditious, has proved to be an indispensable tool for delineating soil stratigraphy. In fact, their results combined with the borehole logs and laboratory testing provide extensive information. Geo-electric investigations can be very useful to highlight anomalies and heterogeneities in the cross section. Eventually, it is worthwhile to stress that embankments have generally a height of less than 4 m and a width between 1.2 and 3 m. This has restricted the investigation tools that could be used in this peculiar case

    Increased ventral striatal volume in college-aged binge drinkers

    BACKGROUND Binge drinking is a serious public health issue associated with cognitive, physiological, and anatomical differences from healthy individuals. No studies, however, have reported subcortical grey matter differences in this population. To address this, we compared the grey matter volumes of college-age binge drinkers and healthy controls, focusing on the ventral striatum, hippocampus and amygdala. METHOD T1-weighted images of 19 binge drinkers and 19 healthy volunteers were analyzed using voxel-based morphometry. Structural data were also covaried with Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) scores. Cluster-extent threshold and small volume corrections were both used to analyze imaging data. RESULTS Binge drinkers had significantly larger ventral striatal grey matter volumes compared to controls. There were no between group differences in hippocampal or amygdalar volume. Ventral striatal, amygdalar, and hippocampal volumes were also negatively related to AUDIT scores across groups. CONCLUSIONS Our findings stand in contrast to the lower ventral striatal volume previously observed in more severe forms of alcohol use disorders, suggesting that college-age binge drinkers may represent a distinct population from those groups. These findings may instead represent early sequelae, compensatory effects of repeated binge and withdrawal, or an endophenotypic risk factor

    A formula containing galacto- and fructo-oligosaccharides prevents intestinal and extra-intestinal infections : an observational study

    BACKGROUND & AIM: The addition of prebiotics to infant formula modifies the composition of intestinal microflora. Aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that prebiotics reduce the incidence of intestinal and respiratory infections in healthy infants. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, open trial was performed. Healthy infants were enrolled and randomized to a formula additioned with a mixture of galacto- and fructo-oligosaccharides or to a control formula. The incidence of intestinal and respiratory tract infections and the anthropometric measures were monitored for 12 months. RESULTS: Three hundred and forty two infants (mean age 53.7+/-32.1 days) were enrolled. The incidence of gastroenteritis was lower in the supplemented group than in the controls (0.12+/-0.04 vs. 0.29+/-0.05 episodes/child/12 months; p=0.015). The number of children with more than 3 episodes tended to be lower in prebiotic group (17/60 vs. 29/65; p=0.06). The number of children with multiple antibiotic courses/year was lower in children receiving prebiotics (24/60 vs. 43/65; p=0.004). A transient increase in body weight was observed in children on prebiotics compared to controls during the first 6 months of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Prebiotic administration reduce intestinal and, possibly, respiratory infections in healthy infants during the first year of age

A fronteggiare tali calamitΓ  intervengono la pubblica amministrazione e/o i gestori della rete che, collaborando a volte anche con associazioni e organizzazioni private e di volontariato, operano per ripristinare le prestazioni originarie del sistema. In particolar modo le infrastrutture critiche, cioΓ¨ quei sistemi legati ai servizi di comunicazione, distribuzione dell’energia, sanitΓ , tecnologia dell’informazione, sistemi finanziari/bancari, trasporti e sistemi idrici che forniscono i servizi essenziali per l’economia, la sicurezza e la stabilitΓ  di una Nazione, devono essere salvaguardate dai disastri. Il sistema di trasporto Γ¨ essenziale per il benessere delle comunitΓ , specialmente in condizioni avverse in quanto fornisce la possibilitΓ  di evacuazione, delle operazioni di salvataggio e facilita il ripristino dei servizi per la comunitΓ , data la sua vasta interconnessione con tutte le altre infrastrutture critiche. Le caratteristiche e la capacitΓ  di un determinato territorio atte a fronteggiare gli eventi calamitosi dipendono da numerosi aspetti che possono essere riassunti nei concetti di sostenibilitΓ , vulnerabilitΓ  e resilienza. Gli approcci definiti come disaster risk, climate change e quello basato sulla resilienza sono gli strumenti di valutazione maggiormente utilizzati e innovativi. La recente introduzione di questi concetti e degli approcci citati comporta un ventaglio di definizioni non univoche nella letteratura tecnica. Il presente lavoro ha lo scopo di: 1) Fornire una revisione critica e comparata della letteratura tecnica sull’argomento; 2) Analizzare gli attuali approcci che mirano ad incrementare la resilienza di una infrastruttura legata al trasporto, in particolar modo nei confronti di eventi rari (es. alluvioni, frane, ecc.); 3) Individuare i fattori e le azioni che influiscono sul ripristino delle performance del sistema; 4) Elaborare un metodo di valutazione della resilienza di tipo gerarchico

    Adolescent Brain Development and the Risk for Alcohol and Other Drug Problems

    Dynamic changes in neurochemistry, fiber architecture, and tissue composition occur in the adolescent brain. The course of these maturational processes is being charted with greater specificity, owing to advances in neuroimaging and indicate grey matter volume reductions and protracted development of white matter in regions known to support complex cognition and behavior. Though fronto-subcortical circuitry development is notable during adolescence, asynchronous maturation of prefrontal and limbic systems may render youth more vulnerable to risky behaviors such as substance use. Indeed, binge-pattern alcohol consumption and comorbid marijuana use are common among adolescents, and are associated with neural consequences. This review summarizes the unique characteristics of adolescent brain development, particularly aspects that predispose individuals to reward seeking and risky choices during this phase of life, and discusses the influence of substance use on neuromaturation. Together, findings in this arena underscore the importance of refined research and programming efforts in adolescent health and interventional needs
