Lessons on Eternal Traversable Wormholes in AdS
We attempt to construct eternal traversable wormholes connecting two
asymptotically AdS regions by introducing a static coupling between their dual
CFTs. We prove that there are no semiclassical traversable wormholes with
Poincar\'e invariance in the boundary directions in higher than two spacetime
dimensions. We critically examine the possibility of evading our result by
coupling a large number of bulk fields. Static, traversable wormholes with less
symmetry may be possible, and could be constructed using the ingredients we

Dynamical correlations in financial systems
One of the main goals in the field of complex systems is the selection and extraction of relevant and meaningful information about the properties of the underlying system from large datasets. In the last years different methods have been proposed for filtering financial data by extracting a structure of interactions from cross-correlation matrices where only few entries are selected by means of criteria borrowed from network theory. We discuss and compare the stability and robustness of two methods: the Minimum Spanning Tree and the Planar Maximally Filtered Graph. We construct such graphs dynamically by considering running windows of the whole dataset. We study their stability and their edges's persistence and we come to the conclusion that the Planar Maximally Filtered Graph offers a richer and more significant structure with respect to the Minimum Spanning Tree, showing also a stronger stability in the long run
Caratterizzazione microstrutturale e prove di resilienza su giunti Friction Stir Welding e Linear Friction Welding di compositi a matrice metallica
In questo studio sono stati caratterizzati giunti Friction Stir Welding e Linear Friction Welding su compositi a matrice in lega di alluminio e rinforzo particellare ceramico. Il processo FSW è stato applicato a due compositi ottenuti con processo fusorio, quindi estrusi e trattati termicamente T6: AA6061/20%vol.Al2O3p e AA7005/10%vol.Al2O3p. I giunti LFW sono stati invece realizzati su un composito con matrice in lega di alluminio e rinforzo particellare in carburo di silicio, ottenuto mediante metallurgia delle polveri, quindi forgiato e trattato termicamente T4: AA2124/25%vol.SiCp. Sono stati esaminati gli effetti della saldatura sullecaratteristiche microstrutturali dei giunti, avvalendosi di tecniche di microscopia ottica con analisi di immagine e di microscopia elettronica in scansione (SEM) con microsonda a dispersione di energia (EDS). Sono state quindi condotte prove di resilienza con pendolo strumentato Charpy. Lo studio dei meccanismi di danneggiamento è stato effettuato mediante analisi al SEM delle superfici di frattura. Entrambi i processi di saldatura hanno portato a giunti sostanzialmente esenti da difetti. La microstruttura dei cordoni è risultata dipendente sia dalle caratteristiche microstrutturali iniziali dei compositi considerati, sia dalla tipologia di processo di saldatura. Nel caso dei compositi AA6061/20%Al2O3p e AA7005/10%Al2O3p saldati FSW si è osservato un sostanziale incremento di resilienza, rispetto al materiale base, in conseguenza dell’affinamento dei grani della matrice, della riduzione della dimensione media delle particelle di rinforzo e della loro spigolosità, indotte dal processo di saldatura. Il composito AA2124/25%SiCp saldato LFW ha presentato valori di resilienza confrontabili con quelli del materiale base, in conseguenza, soprattutto, dei limitati effetti della saldatura su dimensione e distribuzione delle particelle di rinforzo
Till death (or an intruder) do us part: intrasexual-competition in a monogamous Primate
Polygynous animals are often highly dimorphic, and show large sex-differences in the degree of intra-sexual competition and aggression, which is associated with biased operational sex ratios (OSR). For socially monogamous, sexually monomorphic species, this relationship is less clear. Among mammals, pair-living has sometimes been assumed to imply equal OSR and low frequency, low intensity intra-sexual competition; even when high rates of intra-sexual competition and selection, in both sexes, have been theoretically predicted and described for various taxa. Owl monkeys are one of a few socially monogamous primates. Using long-term demographic and morphological data from 18 groups, we show that male and female owl monkeys experience intense intra-sexual competition and aggression from solitary floaters. Pair-mates are regularly replaced by intruding floaters (27 female and 23 male replacements in 149 group-years), with negative effects on the reproductive success of both partners. Individuals with only one partner during their life produced 25% more offspring per decade of tenure than those with two or more partners. The termination of the pair-bond is initiated by the floater, and sometimes has fatal consequences for the expelled adult. The existence of floaters and the sporadic, but intense aggression between them and residents suggest that it can be misleading to assume an equal OSR in socially monogamous species based solely on group composition. Gene expression dataset of prostate cells upon MIR205HG/LEADR modulation
Although the role of miR-205 has been widely elucidated, the function of its host gene (MIR205HG) is yet to be clarified. We have recently investigated whether this gene is a simple endorsement for miRNA production or it may act independently, demonstrating its action as nuclear long noncoding RNA able to control basal-luminal differentiation in the human prostate context, thus deserving the reannotation as LEADR, Long Epithelial Alu-interacting Differentiation-related RNA. Here, we describe the loss and gain of function approaches experimentally used to modulate LEADR expression, and the bioinformatic procedures employed to analyze microarray data in our published article \u201cLEADeR role of miR-205 host gene as long noncoding RNA in prostate basal cell differentiation\u201d [1]. The high reproducibility of replicates, the strong concordance with a validation technique, and the coherent behavior observed for differentially expression features, both in terms of single genes and deregulated pathways, not only support the quality of the data, but also endorse their potential reuse. Very relevant are the diverse silencing and overexpression strategies employed (all of which analyzed in multiple biologically independent replicates), which should allow other scientists to analyze our dataset for the specific purpose of their research, may it be the study of MIR205HG function as miRNA host gene, the investigation of its miRNA-independent biological role or again the dissection of Alu sequence involvement in the mechanism of action of long noncoding RNAs, which is a hot topic in the field
Delivery status of the ELI-NP gamma beam system
International audienceThe ELI-NP GBS is a high intensity and monochromatic gamma source under construction in Magurele (Romania). The design and construction of the Gamma Beam System complex as well as the integration of the technical plants and the commissioning of the overall facility, was awarded to the Eurogammas Consortium in March 2014. A simple quantum algorithm to efficiently prepare sparse states
State preparation is a fundamental routine in quantum computation, for which
many algorithms have been proposed. Among them, perhaps the simplest one is the
Grover-Rudolph algorithm. In this paper, we analyse the performance of this
algorithm when the state to prepare is sparse. We show that the gate complexity
is linear in the number of non-zero amplitudes in the state and quadratic in
the number of qubits. We then introduce a simple modification of the algorithm,
which makes the dependence on the number of qubits also linear. This is
competitive with the best known algorithms for sparse state preparatio
Building Babies - Chapter 16
In contrast to birds, male mammals rarely help to raise the offspring. Of all mammals, only among rodents, carnivores, and primates, males are sometimes intensively engaged in providing infant care (Kleiman and Malcolm 1981). Male caretaking of infants has long been recognized in nonhuman primates (Itani 1959). Given that infant care behavior can have a positive effect on the infant’s development, growth, well-being, or survival, why are male mammals not more frequently involved in “building babies”? We begin the chapter defining a few relevant terms and introducing the theory and hypotheses that have historically addressed the evolution of paternal care. We then review empirical findings on male care among primate taxa, before focusing, in the final section, on our own work on paternal care in South American owl monkeys (Aotus spp.). The Decreasing Significance of Stigma in the Lives of Bisexual Men: Keynote Address, Bisexual Research Convention, London
This article is constructed around a keynote address given at the Bisexual Research Convention, held in London 2010. The keynote was delivered by sociologist Eric Anderson, on behalf of himself and the other authors of this article. The keynote reflected upon a body of ongoing research, funded by the American Institute of Bisexuality and collected by this team of researchers, into the changing relationship between men and homophobia. It first contextualizes 20th-century attitudes toward homo/bisexuality before showing a declining significance of biphobia and homophobia in men's lives today. In accordance with the keynote, this article draws from preliminary findings of multiple ongoing studies of bisexual men in the United States and the United Kingdom
