Bank-to-turn control technology survey for homing missiles
The potential advantages of bank-to-turn control are summarized. Recent and current programs actively investigating bank-to-turn steering are reviewed and critical technology areas concerned with bank-to-turn control are assessed
A Portable, Low-Cost Wheelchair Ergometer Design Based on a Mathematical Model of Pediatric Wheelchair Dynamics
Evaluation and training of wheelchair propulsion improves efficiency and prevents orthopaedic injury in pediatric manual wheelchair users. Ergometers allow static propulsion and emulate typical conditions. Currently available ergometers have deficiencies that limit their use in motion analysis. A new ergometer is developed and evaluated based on a model of wheelchair inertial dynamics that eliminates these deficiencies. This makes integrated motion analysis of wheelchair propulsion in current community, home, and international outreach efforts possible
Evaluation of Upper Extremity Movement Characteristics during Standardized Pediatric Functional Assessment with a KinectÂź-based Markerless Motion Analysis System
A recently developed and evaluated upper extremity (UE) markerless motion analysis system based on the MicrosoftÂź KinectÂź has potential for improving functional assessment of patients with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. 12 typically-developing adolescents ages 12-17 were evaluated using both the Kinect-based system and the Shriners Hospitals for Children Upper Extremity Evaluation (SHUEE), a validated measure of UE motion. The study established population means of UE kinematic parameters for each activity. Statistical correlation analysis was used to identify key kinematic metrics used to develop automatic scoring algorithms. The Kinect motion analysis platform is technically sound and can be applied to standardized task-based UE evaluation while providing enhanced sensitivity in clinical analysis and automation through scoring algorithms
Pyramiding of Ryd2 and Ryd3 conferring tolerance to a German isolate of Barley yellow dwarf virus-PAV (BYDV-PAV-ASL-1) leads to quantitative resistance against this isolate
Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) is an economically important pathogen of barley, which may become even more important due to global warming. In barley, several loci conferring tolerance to BYDV-PAV-ASL-1 are known, e.g. Ryd2, Ryd3 and a quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 2H. The aim of the present study was to get information whether the level of tolerance against this isolate of BYDV in barley can be improved by combining these loci. Therefore, a winter and a spring barley population of doubled haploid (DH) lines were genotyped by molecular markers for the presence of the susceptibility or the resistance encoding allele at respective loci (Ryd2, Ryd3, QTL on chromosome 2H) and were tested for their level of BYDV-tolerance after inoculation with viruliferous (BYDV-PAV-ASL-1) aphids in field trials. In DH-lines carrying the combination Ryd2 and Ryd3, a significant reduction of the virus titre was detected as compared to lines carrying only one of these genes. Furthermore, spring barley DH-lines with this allele combination also showed a significantly higher relative grain yield as compared to lines carrying only Ryd2 or Ryd3. The QTL on chromosome 2H had only a small effect on the level of tolerance in those lines carrying only Ryd2, or Ryd3 or a combination of both, but the effect in comparison to lines carrying no tolerance allele was significant. Overall, these results show that the combination of Ryd2 and Ryd3 leads to quantitative resistance against BYDV-PAV instead of tolerance
Imaging of microwave fields using ultracold atoms
We report a technique that uses clouds of ultracold atoms as sensitive,
tunable, and non-invasive probes for microwave field imaging with micrometer
spatial resolution. The microwave magnetic field components drive Rabi
oscillations on atomic hyperfine transitions whose frequency can be tuned with
a static magnetic field. Readout is accomplished using state-selective
absorption imaging. Quantitative data extraction is simple and it is possible
to reconstruct the distribution of microwave magnetic field amplitudes and
phases. While we demonstrate 2d imaging, an extension to 3d imaging is
straightforward. We use the method to determine the microwave near-field
distribution around a coplanar waveguide integrated on an atom chip.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Requirements for, and Cytoplasmic Concentrations of, Sulphate and Chloride, and Cytoplasmic Volume Spaces in the Halophilic Bacterium Ectothiorhodospira mobilis
Ectothiorhodospira mobilis is a halophilic phototrophic bacterium that has been isolated from soda lakes containing high concentrations of sulphate, chloride and carbonates. It utilizes reduced sulphur compounds as photosynthetic electron donors and oxidizes them to sulphate, but can also grow photoheterotrophically with sulphate as sole sulphur source. The requirements for, and the cytoplasmic concentrations of, sulphate and chloride have been determined. High concentrations of sulphate are neither required for nor inhibit growth. Although chloride is by far the dominant anion of the environment, growth of E. mobilis occurs in the absence of added chloride. Sodium chloride can be replaced by sodium sulphate and sodium carbonate. Chloride is excluded from the cytoplasm with decreasing ratios of cytoplasmic/external chloride at increasing external chloride concentrations (under iso-osmotic conditions)
Enriching Knowledge Bases with Counting Quantifiers
Information extraction traditionally focuses on extracting relations between
identifiable entities, such as . Yet, texts
often also contain Counting information, stating that a subject is in a
specific relation with a number of objects, without mentioning the objects
themselves, for example, "California is divided into 58 counties". Such
counting quantifiers can help in a variety of tasks such as query answering or
knowledge base curation, but are neglected by prior work. This paper develops
the first full-fledged system for extracting counting information from text,
called CINEX. We employ distant supervision using fact counts from a knowledge
base as training seeds, and develop novel techniques for dealing with several
challenges: (i) non-maximal training seeds due to the incompleteness of
knowledge bases, (ii) sparse and skewed observations in text sources, and (iii)
high diversity of linguistic patterns. Experiments with five human-evaluated
relations show that CINEX can achieve 60% average precision for extracting
counting information. In a large-scale experiment, we demonstrate the potential
for knowledge base enrichment by applying CINEX to 2,474 frequent relations in
Wikidata. CINEX can assert the existence of 2.5M facts for 110 distinct
relations, which is 28% more than the existing Wikidata facts for these
relations.Comment: 16 pages, The 17th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2018
