    Charting the phase diagram of QCD3

    We study the phase diagram of SU (N) gauge theory in three space-time dimensions with a Chern-Simons term at level k, coupled to two sets of fundamental fermions with masses m1 and m2, respectively. The two-dimensional phase diagram that we propose shows a rich structure and widens in an interesting way previous results in the literature, to which it reduces in some limits. We present several checks of our proposal, including consistency with boson/fermion dualities. In this respect, we extensively comment on the structure of the scalar potential which is needed on the bosonic side of the duality

    Efficacy of Intravitreal dexamethasone implant in different patterns of diabetic macular edema

    Purpose: Different patterns of diabetic macular edema (DME) suggest different pathogenesis and drug response. We evaluated the outcomes after intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implant for DME with or without serous retinal detachment (SRD). Methods: In this retrospective study, 22 naïve patients (23 eyes) with DME who underwent a single DEX implant were evaluated. Based on the optical coherence tomographic pattern of DME, 12 eyes had a cystoid macular edema pattern (Group 1) and 11 eyes had an SRD pattern (Group 2). The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (R), central retinal volume (CRV), SRD height (SRDh), and intraocular pressure (IOP) were recorded before and at two and four months after the treatment. Results: There were no significant differences between the groups regarding demographic, clinical data and outcomes at baseline. In Group 1, the CRT and CRV significantly decreased at two months (P = 0.002 and P = 0.01, respectively), while the BCVA significantly improved at four months (P = 0.03). In Group 2, the CRT and CRV significantly improved (P < 0.01 and P ≤ 0.01, respectively) during the follow-up period. At four months, both groups showed a recurrence of DME, Group 1 in particular (two-month CRT reduction, -149 ± 127 μm vs four-month CRT reduction, -72 ± 174 μm; P = 0.04). The mean reduction in CRV was significantly different at four months (Group 1, -0.49 ± 1.7 mm3vs Group 2, -1.3 ± 1.3 mm3; P = 0.04). In Group 2, the SRDh significantly decreased at two (P = 0.01) and four months (P = 0.01). Four cases with elevated IOP were managed. Conclusion: DEX implants were found to be effective in different patterns of DME. The SRD pattern may predict a longer-lasting morphologic efficacy

    Soft L_e-L_mu-L_tau flavour symmetry breaking and sterile neutrino keV Dark Matter

    We discuss how a LeLμLτL_e-L_\mu-L_\tau flavour symmetry that is softly broken leads to keV sterile neutrinos, which are a prime candidate for Warm Dark Matter. This is to our knowledge the first model where flavour symmetries are applied simultaneously to active and sterile neutrinos explaining at the same time active neutrino properties and this peculiar Dark Matter scenario. The essential point is that different scales of the symmetry breaking and the symmetry preserving entries in the mass matrix lead to one right-handed neutrino which is nearly massless compared to the other two. Furthermore, we naturally predict vanishing θ13\theta_{13} and maximal θ23\theta_{23}, while the correct value of θ12\theta_{12} must come from the mixing of the charged leptons. We can furthermore predict an exact mass spectrum for the light neutrinos, which will be testable in the very near future.Comment: 14 page

    Visual functional changes after ocriplasmin injection for vitreomacular traction: A microperimetric analysis

    PURPOSE: The purpose is to evaluate functional changes after ocriplasmin injection to treat vitreomacular traction (VMT) by microperimetry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prospective interventional study on patients underwent an intravitreal ocriplasmin injection. Optical coherence tomography, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) test, and microperimetry were performed at baseline, 1 week, 1 and 3 months. Microperimeter recorded retinal sensitivity (RS) and central retinal sensitivity (CRS) at central 12° and 4°, respectively, and fixation as bivariate contour ellipse area (BCEA) at 68%, 95%, and 99% of fixation points. Functional parameters were analyzed in patients who had (Group A) or not (Group B) VMT release. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients including 18 with VMT and 3 with VMT plus macular hole (MH) were treated. Eleven patients achieved VMT resolution including all cases with MH that achieved hole closure. An impairment of BCVA, RS and CRS (P < 0.01; P < 0.001; P = 0.001, respectively) was reported at 1 week followed by a significant improvement (BCVA, P = 0.001; RS, CRS, P = 0.02) at 3 months. The early impairment of visual acuity and sensitivity significantly occurred in Group B (P ≤ 0.01) while their recovery significantly occurred in Group A (P < 0.01). BCEA significantly increased in dimension (68%, P = 0.01; 95%, P = 0.03) at 1 week, subsequently returning to near baseline values over follow-up. Only in Group A, fixation stability significantly improved at 3 months. CONCLUSION: Microperimetry confirms an early and reversible functional impairment after ocriplasmin injection regardless VMT resolution. If a greater decrease in function could occur in the eyes without VMT resolution, a better functional recovery could occur in the event of VMT resolution

    Translaminar Pressure Difference and Ocular Perfusion Pressure in Glaucomatous Eyes with Different Optic Disc Sizes

    Purpose: Intracranial pressure (ICP) and ocular perfusion pressure (OPP) are both involved with the pathogenesis of glaucoma. The orbital ICP determines a retrolaminar counter pressure that is antagonistic to the intraocular pressure (IOP). The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether the translaminar pressure difference (TLPD) and the OPP varies in glaucoma patients with different optic disc sizes. Methods: In this university hospital-based, observational, cross-sectional clinical study, all patients underwent an ophthalmic evaluation. Blood pressure, height, weight, and the results of retinal nerve fiber layer examination with optical coherence tomography examination were recorded. TLPD and OPP were calculated for each patient using proxy algorithms to attain indirect surrogate parameter values. Patients’ eyes were stratified into three quantiles according to optic disc sizes and the differences compared. Data from both eyes were used after using the appropriate correction for inter-eye dependency. Results: The sample consisted of 140 eyes of 73 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and suspects. Patients with large disc size presented with higher TLPD as compared to those with average and small-sized discs (2.4 ± 4.5, 2.8 ± 3.8, and 3.7 ± 4.7 mmHg for first, second, and third tertile, respectively (P < 0.000). OPP did not vary according to the optic disc size. Conclusion: Glaucoma patients with larger optic discs have higher TLPD. The pathological significance of this finding warrants further investigation

    PORK QUALITY ASSESSMENT THROUGH IMAGE SEGMENTATION AND SUPPORT VECTOR MACHINE IMPLEMENTATION

    Pork is the most consumed meat in the Philippines, and efficient quality control is essential for ensuring the safety of its consumers. Current manual procedures of meat inspection are time-consuming and laboratory-intensive considering the large amount of supply to be examined. This research aims to construct a rapid objective system of pork quality assessment with respect to meat freshness through Support Vector Machine (SVM) implementation, and to ultimately have an accuracy rate of ≥ 90%. 35 meat samples were collected, and their images were acquired. 30 of these were randomly designated as part of the training dataset while the rest were designated as part of the testing dataset. Of the 30 training samples, 6 were randomly chosen for the creation of a microbial profile. In all of the acquired image samples, image segmentation was performed and the RGB, HSV, Lab, and statistical texture features were extracted. These were inputted in 15 different SVM configurations. SVM classification yielded an accuracy rate of 93.33 %. Results from the microbial profile revealed considerable microbial activity at the 5th and 6th intervals (10th and 12th hour) with 2 and 3 colonies formed, respectively. With the ability of the SVM to distinguish between samples with respect to the hour interval and with the supplementation of the microbial profile, an objective artificial intelligence mechanism for freshness detection was successfully created.Keywords: Meat quality, Image segmentation, Support vector machine, Artificial intelligenc

    The omnivorous Tyrolean Iceman: colon contents (meat, cereals, pollen, moss and whipworm) and stable isotope analyses

    The contents of the colon of the Tyrolean Iceman who lived Ga. 5300 years ago include muscle fibres, cereal remains, a diversity of pollen, and most notably that of the hop hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia) retaining cellular contents, as well as a moss leaf (Neckera complanata) and eggs of the parasitic whipworm (Trichuris trichiura). Based almost solely on stable isotope analyses and ignoring the work on the colon contents, two recently published papers on the Iceman's diet draw ill- founded conclusions about vegetarianism and even veganism. Neither the pollen nor the moss is likely to have been deliberately consumed as food by the Iceman. All the available evidence concerning the Iceman's broad-based diet is reviewed and the significance of the colon contents for matters other than assessment of food intake is outlined
