    Limits of flexural wave absorption by open lossy resonators: reflection and transmission problems

    The limits of flexural wave absorption by open lossy resonators are analytically and numerically reported in this work for both the reflection and transmission problems. An experimental validation for the reflection problem is presented. The reflection and transmission of flexural waves in 1D resonant thin beams are analyzed by means of the transfer matrix method. The hypotheses, on which the analytical model relies, are validated by experimental results. The open lossy resonator, consisting of a finite length beam thinner than the main beam, presents both energy leakage due to the aperture of the resonators to the main beam and inherent losses due to the viscoelastic damping. Wave absorption is found to be limited by the balance between the energy leakage and the inherent losses of the open lossy resonator. The perfect compensation of these two elements is known as the critical coupling condition and can be easily tuned by the geometry of the resonator. On the one hand, the scattering in the reflection problem is represented by the reflection coefficient. A single symmetry of the resonance is used to obtain the critical coupling condition. Therefore the perfect absorption can be obtained in this case. On the other hand, the transmission problem is represented by two eigenvalues of the scattering matrix, representing the symmetric and anti-symmetric parts of the full scattering problem. In the geometry analyzed in this work, only one kind of symmetry can be critically coupled, and therefore, the maximal absorption in the transmission problem is limited to 0.5. The results shown in this work pave the way to the design of resonators for efficient flexural wave absorption

    Towards an agent-based framework for online after-sales services

    The multi-agent paradigm for building intelligent systems has gradually been accepted by researchers and practitioners in the research field of artificial intelligence. There are also attempts of adapting agents and agent-based systems for creating industrial applications and providing e-services. In this paper, we present an attempt to use agents for constructing an online after-sale services system. The system is decomposed into four major cooperative agents, and in which each agent concentrates on particular aspects in the system and expresses intelligence by using various techniques. The proposed agent-based framework for the system is presented at both the micro-level and the macro-level according to the Gaia methodology. UML notations are also used to represent some software design models. As the result of this, agents are implemented into a framework for which exploits Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) technique to fulfil real life on-line services' diagnoses and tasks

    Superconductivity under pressure in the Dirac semimetal PdTe2

    The Dirac semimetal PdTe2_2 was recently reported to be a type-I superconductor (Tc=T_c = 1.64 K, μ0Hc(0)=13.6\mu_0 H_c (0) = 13.6 mT) with unusual superconductivity of the surface sheath. We here report a high-pressure study, p2.5p \leq 2.5 GPa, of the superconducting phase diagram extracted from ac-susceptibility and transport measurements on single crystalline samples. Tc(p)T_c (p) shows a pronounced non-monotonous variation with a maximum Tc=T_c = 1.91 K around 0.91 GPa, followed by a gradual decrease to 1.27 K at 2.5 GPa. The critical field of bulk superconductivity in the limit T0T \rightarrow 0, Hc(0,p)H_c(0,p), follows a similar trend and consequently the Hc(T,p)H_c(T,p)-curves under pressure collapse on a single curve: Hc(T,p)=Hc(0,p)[1(T/Tc(p))2]H_c(T,p)=H_c(0,p)[1-(T/T_c(p))^2]. Surface superconductivity is robust under pressure as demonstrated by the large superconducting screening signal that persists for applied dc-fields Ha>HcH_a > H_c. Surprisingly, for p1.41p \geq 1.41 GPa the superconducting transition temperature at the surface TcST_c^S is larger than TcT_c of the bulk. Therefore surface superconductivity may possibly have a non-trivial nature and is connected to the topological surface states detected by ARPES.     Extensive primary production promoted the recovery of the Ediacaran Shuram excursion

    Member IV of the Ediacaran Doushantuo Formation records the recovery from the most negative carbon isotope excursion in Earth history. However, the main biogeochemical controls that ultimately drove this recovery have yet to be elucidated. Here, we report new carbon and nitrogen isotope and concentration data from the Nanhua Basin (South China), where δ13C values of carbonates (δ13Ccarb) rise from - 7‰ to -1‰ and δ15N values decrease from +5.4‰ to +2.3‰. These trends are proposed to arise from a new equilibrium in the C and N cycles where primary production overcomes secondary production as the main source of organic matter in sediments. The enhanced primary production is supported by the coexisting Raman spectral data, which reveal a systematic difference in kerogen structure between depositional environments. Our new observations point to the variable dominance of distinct microbial communities in the late Ediacaran ecosystems, and suggest that blooms of oxygenic phototrophs modulated the recovery from the most negative δ13Ccarb excursion in Earth history

    Classification of Overlapped Audio Events Based on AT, PLSA, and the Combination of Them

    Audio event classification, as an important part of Computational Auditory Scene Analysis, has attracted much attention. Currently, the classification technology is mature enough to classify isolated audio events accurately, but for overlapped audio events, it performs much worse. While in real life, most audio documents would have certain percentage of overlaps, and so the overlap classification problem is an important part of audio classification. Nowadays, the work on overlapped audio event classification is still scarce, and most existing overlap classification systems can only recognize one audio event for an overlap. In this paper, in order to deal with overlaps, we innovatively introduce the author-topic (AT) model which was first proposed for text analysis into audio classification, and innovatively combine it with PLSA (Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis). We propose 4 systems, i.e. AT, PLSA, AT-PLSA and PLSA-AT, to classify overlaps. The 4 proposed systems have the ability to recognize two or more audio events for an overlap. The experimental results show that the 4 systems perform well in classifying overlapped audio events, whether it is the overlap in training set or the overlap out of training set.     Impact of Slim DC Capacitance on Floating Capacitor H-bridge Motor Drive

    This paper discusses the impact of small dc capacitance in a motor drive using a floating capacitor H-bridge topology. The proposed topology is intended for applications where variable frequency control is not required. Special attention is paid on investigating the second-order dc capacitor voltage ripples, whose influence on the induction motor as well as on the motor drive itself is of importance. This issue is addressed in this paper through rigorous mathematical formulations. It is found that by inverting the second-order dc ripple voltage using the conventional SVPWM, no harmful harmonics will be generated in the motor line voltage. This demonstrates the possibility of drastically reducing the dc capacitance of the proposed system. Induction motor as well as H-bridge performance with respect to different dc capacitance values is demonstrated by experiments, which lays the foundation for cost reduction and reliability enhancement of the proposed system

    Sedimentation rates of the middle Miocene Clarkia Lake deposit, Nothern Idaho, USA

    A global warming phase related to the onset of the Columbia River volcanism in the USA is recorded in the middle Miocene Clarkia Lake deposit, which yields abundant fossil leaves of subtropical to warm-termperate species preserved in extraordinary conditions [1]. These leaf fossils are found in varve-like laminated successions that presumably represent seasonal phases interleaved with volcanic-ash layers [2]. Despite being studied for over four decades, this paleolake deposit remains poorly constrained in its time-scale. Defining its sedimentation rate is pivotal for reconstructing the paleoclimatic conditions during the middle Miocene. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) scanning of key intervals offered insights about the elemental ratio distribution in the Clarkia Lake deposit, which might hold the answer to the sedimentation rate question. Accelerating voltages of 10, 30, and 50 kV detected counts of Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Br, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, and Ba. Plots of ratios using 702 element-combinations show a strong, positive correlation between the observed varve-like structures and S/Rb and Zr/Rb ratios. The former ratio is interpreted as a tracer of fluvial dilution of the presumably constant rate of reduced sulfur deposition, and the latter denotes variation in the grain-size distribution. For both ratios, low countings represent light-colored, coarse-grained, and quartz-rich layers while high countings correspond to dark-colored, fine-grained, and organic-rich layers. Volcanic ash-layers are distinguishable by enhanced signals of Si, Al, Ti, Zn, and Rb as well as low counts of Fe and Mn. Ratios of Zn and trace elements remarkably detect the extension of these layers along the profiles. Preliminary statistic treatment of this XRF data, employing spectral analysis, suggests depositional cycles at every 1.

    Tetramethylpyrazine attenuates oleic acid-induced acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome through the downregulation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) activation in rats

    The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory activities of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) in the mice model of acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS) induced by oleic acid (0.15 ml/kg, intravenous (i.v.)). We report here that TMP (given at 160 mg/kg intraperitoneal (i.p.)) exerts potent anti-inflammatory effects in this model. After 4, 8 and 12 h, animal model reaction was observed and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was obtained to measure proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin 1β) and proteins by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and bicinchoninic acid protein assay kit, respectively. The protein expression of NF-kB in the lung was measured by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. The results showed an increase in tumor necrosis factor α and interleukin 1β in the ALI/ARDS rat models. The activation of NF-kB was suppressed by TMP in the ALI/ARDS rats. The suppression of those molecules is controlled by NF-kB. These findings support the hypothesis that TMP inhibits the inflammatory process in the lung tissue through the suppression of NF-kB activation. Nevertheless, further investigations are required to determine the potential clinical usefulness of TMP in the adjunctive therapy for ARDS.Key words: Tetramethylpyrazine, acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome, inflammatory factors, NF-kB

    Cardiovascular disease biomarkers are associated with declining renal function in type 2 diabetes

    Aims/hypothesis: We investigated whether biochemical cardiovascular risk factors and/or markers of subclinical cardiovascular disease were associated with the development of reduced renal function in people with type 2 diabetes. Methods: A cohort of 1066 Scottish men and women aged 60–74 years with type 2 diabetes from the Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study were followed up for a median of 6.7 years. New-onset reduced renal function was defined as two eGFRs <60 ml−1 min−1 (1.73 m)−2 at least 3 months apart with a > 25% decline from baseline eGFR. Ankle brachial pressure index (ABI), N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and high-sensitivity troponin T (hsTnT) were measured at baseline. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) and carotid intima media thickness were measured 1 year into follow-up. Data were analysed using Cox proportional hazards models. Results: A total of 119 participants developed reduced renal function during follow-up. ABI, PWV, NT-proBNP and hsTnT were all associated with onset of decline in renal function following adjustment for age and sex. These associations were attenuated after adjustment for additional diabetes renal disease risk factors (systolic BP, baseline eGFR, albumin:creatinine ratio and smoking pack-years), with the exception of hsTnT which remained independently associated (HR 1.51 [95% CI 1.22, 1.87]). Inclusion of hsTnT in a predictive model improved the continuous net reclassification index by 0.165 (0.008, 0.286). Conclusions/interpretation: Our findings demonstrate an association between hsTnT, a marker of subclinical cardiac ischaemia, and subsequent renal function decline. Further research is required to establish the predictive value of hsTnT and response to intervention

    Offset-Free Direct Power Control of DFIG Under Continuous-Time Model Predictive Control

    This paper presents a robust continuous-time model predictive direct power control for doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The proposed approach uses Taylor series expansion to predict the stator current in the synchronous reference frame over a finite time horizon. The predicted stator current is directly used to compute the required rotor voltage in order to minimize the difference between the actual stator currents and their references over the predictive time. However, as the proposed strategy is sensitive to parameter variations and external disturbances, a disturbance observer is embedded into the control loop to remove the steady-state error of the stator current. It turns out that the steady-state and the transient performances can be identified by simple design parameters. In this paper, the reference of the stator current is directly calculated from the desired stator active and reactive powers without encompassing the parameters of the machine itself. Hence, no extra power control loop is required in the control structure to ensure smooth operation of the DFIG. The feasibility of the proposed strategy is verified by the experimental results of the grid-connected DFIG and satisfactory performances are obtained
