    Simultaneous transmission and reception on all elements of an array: binary code excitation

    Pulse-echo arrays are used in radar, sonar, seismic, medical and non-destructive evaluation. There is a trend to produce arrays with an ever-increasing number of elements. This trend presents two major challenges: (i) often the size of the elements is reduced resulting in a lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and (ii) the time required to record all of the signals that correspond to every transmit–receive path increases. Coded sequences with good autocorrelation properties can increase the SNR while orthogonal sets can be used to simultaneously acquire all of the signals that correspond to every transmit–receive path. However, a central problem of conventional coded sequences is that they cannot achieve good autocorrelation and orthogonality properties simultaneously due to their length being limited by the location of the closest reflectors. In this paper, a solution to this problem is presented by using coded sequences that have receive intervals. The proposed approach can be more than one order of magnitude faster than conventional methods. In addition, binary excitation and quantization can be employed, which reduces the data throughput by roughly an order of magnitude and allows for higher sampling rates.     AI-based Ecological Monitoring of Handwriting to Early Detect Cognitive Decline

    The early detection of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is fundamental to initiate treatments for delaying the onset of dementia. Currently, the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) is one of the most common clinical scales used by geriatricians to assess cognitive function. A deviation of 1 to 3 points from the maximum score (30) is considered as sign of relevant cognitive decline. However, objective and affordable tools are needed to complement the screening process. The quantitative analysis of handwriting represents a suitable solution, as the gesture is significantly impaired in MCI subjects in terms of time, speed, fluency and applied pressure. This works presents the development and testing of classification models able to separate subjects at risk of cognitive decline (MMSE <= 28) from controls (MMSE > 28), starting from free-content handwriting data acquired with a smart ink pen, used on paper, from which 36 indicators were computed. Data were collected in 2 phases. The former involved 45 subjects and served for models training. In the latter, data were acquired from 23 subjects in a domestic longitudinal framework and were partially used for model refinement, but mainly for testing. Three different algorithms were tried (support vector machine, random forest and Catboost) The best test performances on the longitudinal data were obtained by a Catboost classifier, achieving accuracy 93.33%, precision 88.89%, recall 100% and f1 score 94.12%.     A system for beach video-monitoring: Beachkeeper plus

    A suitable knowledge of coastal systems, of their morphodynamic characteristics and their response to storm events and man-made structures is essential for littoral conservation and management. Nowadays webcams represent a useful device to obtain information from beaches. Video-monitoring techniques are generally site specific and softwares working with any image acquisition system are rare. Therefore, this work aims at submitting theory and applications of an experimental video monitoring software: Beachkeeper plus, a freeware non-profit software, can be employed and redistributed without modifications. A license file is provided inside software package and in the user guide. Beachkeeper plus is based on Matlab ® and it can be used for the analysis of images and photos coming from any kind of acquisition system (webcams, digital cameras or images downloaded from internet), without any a-priori information or laboratory study of the acquisition system itself. Therefore, it could become a useful tool for beach planning. Through a simple guided interface, images can be analyzed by performing georeferentiation, rectification, averaging and variance. This software was initially operated in Pietra Ligure (Italy), using images from a tourist webcam, and in Mar del Plata (Argentina) using images from a digital camera. In both cases the reliability in different geomorphologic and morphodynamic conditions was confirmed by the good quality of obtained images after georeferentiation, rectification and averaging. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.Fil: Brignone, Massimo.     Bioenergetics of the common seastar Asterias rubens : a keystone predator and pest for European bivalve culture

    Losses due to predation are recognized as an important factor affecting shellfish stocks, restoration efforts and aquaculture production. Managing and mitigating the impact of predators require information on the population dynamics and functional responses to prey availability under varying environmental conditions. Asterias spp. are well-known keystone predators with the capacity to exert a top down control on shellfish populations. Asterias spp. populations are extremely plastic, booming fast when prey is abundant and exhibiting a remarkable individual resilience to starvation and adverse environmental conditions. These aspects have led Asterias spp. to be considered pests by shellfish producers and fishers and to be catalogued among the most devastating invasive species. Assessment and mitigation of the impact of Asterias rubens in northern Europe have been the objective of several projects. However, there is still a limited understanding of the processes behind A. rubens population plasticity and how environmental conditions affect individual growth and predation. Under these circumstances a comprehensive eco-physiological model becomes necessary. These models can integrate available information on biology and eco-physiology to gain understanding of the effect of the environmental conditions on the impact of A. rubens. In this work, we performed a number of eco-physiological experiments and combined them with field data from a Danish estuary to estimate and validate the parameters of a dynamic energy budget (DEB) model for the whole life cycle of A. rubens. DEB models can be used to assess the effects of environmental variability on the life cycle and key population traits allowing the prediction of the performance, abundance, resource requirements and potential distribution of individuals and populations under dynamic environments. As such the DEB model presented in this study aims to become a tool to be used to assess and manage the impact of A. rubens in cultured and natural shellfish populations. The successfully parameterised DEB model describes A. rubens as a plastic species, an efficient predator with low maintenance costs and, at least while feeding on mussels, a high energy yield from its prey. The model validation against independent data resulted in the model being capable to assess growth, food demand, reproductive output and reserves dynamics of A. rubens under experimental and natural conditions. Moreover, application of the model to the Limfjorden seastar fishery is used to further discuss the use of the model to understand biology and ecology of this pest species in the context with the management of shellfish stocks and impact mitigation.publishedVersio
