    Overexpression of microRNA-16 declines cellular growth, proliferation and induces apoptosis in human breast cancer cells

    MicroRNAs (miRNA) are a large family of small single-stranded RNA molecules found in all multicellular organisms. Early studies have been shown that miRNA are involved in cancer development and progression, and this role can be done by working as an oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, so manipulation of this molecules can be a promising approach in cancer therapy, and experimental results represented that the modification in breast cancer phenotype is possible by miRNA expression alteration. miR-16, which is located in 13q14 chromosome, plays critical roles as a tumor suppressor by targeting several oncogenes which regulate cell cycle and apoptosis. Hence, in the present study, we investigated whether miR-16 could decline growth and survival of MCF-7 cell line as model of human breast cancer. MCF-7 cell line was infected with lentiviruses containing miR-16 precursor sequence. The effects of ectopic expression of miR-16 on breast cancer phenotype were examined by cell cycle analysis and apoptosis assays. miR-16 cytotoxicity effect was measured by the MTT assay. We showed that the miR-16 overexpression reduces Cyclin D1 and BCL2 at messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein levels in MCF-7 cell line. In addition, this is found that enforced expression of miR-16 decreases cell growth and proliferation and induces apoptosis in MCF-7 cells. In conclusion, our results revealed that upregulation of miR-16 would be a potential approach for breast cancer therapy. © 2015, The Society for In Vitro Biology

    Gravitational microlensing is a powerful method to search for and characterize exoplanets, and it was first proposed by Paczyński in 1986. We provide a brief historical excursus of microlensing, especially focused on the discoveries of free-floating planets (FFPs) in the Milky Way. We also emphasize that, thanks to the technological developments, it will allow to estimate the physical parameters (in particular the mass and distance) of FFPs towards the center of our Galaxy, through the measure of the source finite radius, Earth or satellite parallax, and/or astrometric effects

    Does currency wealth or substitiution effect matters? recent evidence from money demand in China

    This study investigates the stability of money demand function for China, using an innovation ARDL framework for co-integration test for the time period 1986-2018. Specifically, this study used narrow money (M1) and broad money (M2) as a measurement of money. To consider currency wealth and substitution effects, the estimated money demand model includes the real effective exchange rate in addition to income and interest rate. By incorporating the CUSUM and CUSUMSQ tests for stability in conjunction with co-integration analysis, the results confirm that there exists a stable long-run relationship for narrow money demand function. Importantly, the finding also discovers that real effective exchange rate appears to have a significant substitution effect on narrow money demand, which its omission can lead to biased result and misspecifications in the money demand function. This further corroborates that narrow money, (M1) act as a better measurement, which may have systematic influence on the trend of monetary aggregates

    High-cycle fatigue life behaviour of fabricated glass fibre-reinforced polymer

    This study focuses on the fatigue behaviour analysis of glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite specimens under high-cycle fatigue loading conditions. Therefore, property validation is recommended in the material development process upon further investigation of the fabricated GRFP. This study aims to evaluate the behaviour of the fabricated GFRP fatigue specimen when subjected to high-cycle fatigue loads and compare it to existing studies. A GFRP fatigue test sample was fabricated using the hand layup process into a flat rectangular panel, which was then cut into a small dimension of 28×2×0.2 cm fatigue specimen. Fatigue tests were performed on five flat specimens at different constant amplitude loads or stress levels between 40% and 80% of ultimate tensile strength to obtain the stress–life curve for the fabricated GFRP. Results showed that the high-stress levels of 80% contributed to the most reduced fatigue life cycle of GFRP. This result is consistent with previous studies and lies within the published life cycle range, validating the fabricated GRFP. A new parameter called the failure modulus, or Mf, may be used to quantify a particular set of fatigue tests
