    Tips for research recruitment: The views of sexual minority youth

    Researchers often experience difficulties recruiting hard-to-reach populations. This is especially so for studies involving those who have been historically stigmatized, such as individuals who challenge heteronormative expectations or people who experience mental ill health. The authors aimed to obtain the views of sexual minority adolescents (n=25) about what encouraged their participation in a research project. The authors used a general inductive approach to analyze interview data. Feedback consisted of 2 main overarching themes: tips and suggestions for future research and appreciate participants’ motivation to get involved in research. Strategies for how recruitment can be optimized for studies involving sexual minority young people are discussed

    Comparing different freeze-out scenarios in azimuthal hadron correlations induced by fast partons

    I review the linearized hydrodynamical treatment of a fast parton traversing a perturbative quark-gluon plasma. Using numerical solutions for the medium's response to the fast parton, I obtain the medium's distribution function which is then used in a Cooper-Frye freeze-out prescription to obtain an azimuthal particle spectrum. Two different freeze-out scenarios are considered which yield significantly different results. I conclude that any meaningful comparison of azimuthal hadron correlation functions to RHIC data requires implementing a realistic freeze-out scenario in an expanding medium.Comment: Contribution to the Proceedings for 2008 Hot Quarks in Estes Park, CO, as accepted for publication in EPJ-

    Measurement of Pion Enhancement at Low Transverse Momentum and of the Delta-Resonance Abundance in Si-Nucleus Collisions at AGS Energy

    We present measurements of the pion transverse momentum (p_t) spectra in central Si-nucleus collisions in the rapidity range 2.0<y<5.0 for p_t down to and including p_t=0. The data exhibit an enhanced pion yield at low p_t compared to what is expected for a purely thermal spectral shape. This enhancement is used to determine the Delta-resonance abundance at freeze-out. The results are consistent with a direct measurement of the Delta-resonance yield by reconstruction of proton-pion pairs and imply a temperature of the system at freeze-out close to 140 MeV.Comment: 12 pages + 4 figures (uuencoded at end-of-file

    A critical review on signatures of Quark-Gluon-Plasma formation is given and the current (1998) experimental status is discussed. After giving an introduction to the properties of QCD matter in both, equilibrium- and non-equilibrium theories, we focus on observables which may yield experimental evidence for QGP formation. For each individual observable the discussion is divided into three sections: first the connection between the respective observable and QGP formation in terms of the underlying theoretical concepts is given, then the relevant experimental results are reviewed and finally the current status concerning the interpretation of both, theory and experiment, is discussed.     Observation of charge-dependent azimuthal correlations and possible local strong parity violation in heavy ion collisions

    Parity-odd domains, corresponding to non-trivial topological solutions of the QCD vacuum, might be created during relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These domains are predicted to lead to charge separation of quarks along the orbital momentum of the system created in non-central collisions. To study this effect, we investigate a three particle mixed harmonics azimuthal correlator which is a \P-even observable, but directly sensitive to the charge separation effect. We report measurements of this observable using the STAR detector in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 and 62~GeV. The results are presented as a function of collision centrality, particle separation in rapidity, and particle transverse momentum. A signal consistent with several of the theoretical expectations is detected in all four data sets. We compare our results to the predictions of existing event generators, and discuss in detail possible contributions from other effects that are not related to parity violation.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, as accepted for publication in Physical Review C

    Elliptic flow from two- and four-particle correlations in Au + Au collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}} = 130 GeV

    Elliptic flow holds much promise for studying the early-time thermalization attained in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. Flow measurements also provide a means of distinguishing between hydrodynamic models and calculations which approach the low density (dilute gas) limit. Among the effects that can complicate the interpretation of elliptic flow measurements are azimuthal correlations that are unrelated to the reaction plane (non-flow correlations). Using data for Au + Au collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}} = 130 GeV from the STAR TPC, it is found that four-particle correlation analyses can reliably separate flow and non-flow correlation signals. The latter account for on average about 15% of the observed second-harmonic azimuthal correlation, with the largest relative contribution for the most peripheral and the most central collisions. The results are also corrected for the effect of flow variations within centrality bins. This effect is negligible for all but the most central bin, where the correction to the elliptic flow is about a factor of two. A simple new method for two-particle flow analysis based on scalar products is described. An analysis based on the distribution of the magnitude of the flow vector is also described.Comment: minor text change

    Studying Parton Energy Loss in Heavy-Ion Collisions via Direct-Photon and Charged-Particle Azimuthal Correlations

    Charged-particle spectra associated with direct photon (γdir\gamma_{dir} ) and π0\pi^0 are measured in pp+pp and Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass energy sNN=200\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200 GeV with the STAR detector at RHIC. A hower-shape analysis is used to partially discriminate between γdir\gamma_{dir} and π0\pi^0. Assuming no associated charged particles in the γdir\gamma_{dir} direction (near side) and small contribution from fragmentation photons (γfrag\gamma_{frag}), the associated charged-particle yields opposite to γdir\gamma_{dir} (away side) are extracted. At mid-rapidity (η<0.9|\eta|<0.9) in central Au+Au collisions, charged-particle yields associated with γdir\gamma_{dir} and π0\pi^0 at high transverse momentum (8<pTtrig<168< p_{T}^{trig}<16 GeV/cc) are suppressed by a factor of 3-5 compared with pp + pp collisions. The observed suppression of the associated charged particles, in the kinematic range η<1|\eta|<1 and 3<pTassoc<163< p_{T}^{assoc} < 16 GeV/cc, is similar for γdir\gamma_{dir} and π0\pi^0, and independent of the γdir\gamma_{dir} energy within uncertainties. These measurements indicate that the parton energy loss, in the covered kinematic range, is insensitive to the parton path length.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett, 6 pages, 4 figure

    Spin alignment measurements of the K0(892)K^{*0}(892) and ϕ(1020)\phi(1020) vector mesons at RHIC

    We present the first spin alignment measurements for the K0(892)K^{*0}(892) and ϕ(1020)\phi(1020) vector mesons produced at mid-rapidity with transverse momenta up to 5 GeV/c at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV at RHIC. The diagonal spin density matrix elements with respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions are ρ00\rho_{00} = 0.32 ±\pm 0.04 (stat) ±\pm 0.09 (syst) for the K0K^{*0} (0.8<pT<5.00.8<p_T<5.0 GeV/c) and ρ00\rho_{00} = 0.34 ±\pm 0.02 (stat) ±\pm 0.03 (syst) for the ϕ\phi (0.4<pT<5.00.4<p_T<5.0 GeV/c), and are constant with transverse momentum and collision centrality. The data are consistent with the unpolarized expectation of 1/3 and thus no evidence is found for the transfer of the orbital angular momentum of the colliding system to the vector meson spins. Spin alignments for K0K^{*0} and ϕ\phi in Au+Au collisions were also measured with respect to the particle's production plane. The ϕ\phi result, ρ00\rho_{00} = 0.41 ±\pm 0.02 (stat) ±\pm 0.04 (syst), is consistent with that in p+p collisions, ρ00\rho_{00} = 0.39 ±\pm 0.03 (stat) ±\pm 0.06 (syst), also measured in this work.     Transverse-momentum dependent modification of dynamic texture in central Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV

    Correlations in the hadron distributions produced in relativistic Au+Au collisions are studied in the discrete wavelet expansion method. The analysis is performed in the space of pseudorapidity (|eta| < 1) and azimuth (full 2 pi) in bins of transverse momentum (p_t) from 0.14 < p_t < 2.1 GeV/c. In peripheral Au+Au collisions a correlation structure ascribed to mini-jet fragmentation is observed. It evolves with collision centrality and p_t in a way not seen before which suggests strong dissipation of minijet fragmentation in the longitudinally-expanding medium.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure, accepted as Phys.Rev.C Rapid Communication.
