    Residual efficacy of aerosols to control Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum

    Aerosol insecticides can be important components of insect management plans for mills, food warehouses, and processing plants. In the United States, synergized pyrethrin is used alone or combined with an insect growth regulator (IGR), either methoprene or hydroprene. The presence of food material can result in increased survival of adult Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) or Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val exposed to synergized pyrethrins, but larvae appear to be more susceptible than adults. Results of field trials involving methoprene and pyriproxyfen indicate residual persistence of the IGRs. Tribolium castaneum is more susceptible than T. confusum to IGRs, but combination of pyrethrin with the IGR may produce an additive effect on T. confusum.Keywords: Aerosol, Insecticide, Insect growth regulator, Tribolium castaneum, Tribolium confusu

    Generalization of the minority game to more than one market is considered. At each time step every agent chooses one of its strategies and acts on the market related to this strategy. If the payoff function allows for strong fluctuation of utility then market occupancies become inhomogeneous with preference given to this market where the fluctuation occured first. There exists a critical size of agent population above which agents on bigger market behave collectively.     Enhanced winnings in a mixed-ability population playing a minority game

    We study a mixed population of adaptive agents with small and large memories, competing in a minority game. If the agents are sufficiently adaptive, we find that the average winnings per agent can exceed that obtainable in the corresponding pure populations. In contrast to the pure population, the average success rate of the large-memory agents can be greater than 50 percent. The present results are not reproduced if the agents are fed a random history, thereby demonstrating the importance of memory in this system.Comment: 9 pages Latex + 2 figure

    Expression and function of calcium-activated potassium channels following in-stent restenosis in a porcine coronary artery model

    AbstractIn-stent restenosis (ISR) occurs due to proliferation and migration of smooth muscle cells from media to intima resulting in re-narrowing of the vessel lumen. This study aims to investigate changes in the three main KCa channels in response to stent implantation in porcine coronary arteries as their expression and function in ISR is yet to be defined. Twenty-eight days after stent implantation, immunofluorescent labelling with anti-desmin and anti-vWF confirm the presence of both endothelial and smooth muscle cells within the neointimal layer. Using real-time PCR, significant increase in the SK3 and IKCa and BKCa channel mRNA was observed within this layer alone. Western blot analysis confirms the expression of KCa channels in neointima. Although expression of BKCa was increased in the neointima in comparison with medial region of the artery, microelectrode recordings showed that the function of this channel was unchanged. However, the presence of functional BKCa in both medial and intimal cells suggests that smooth muscle cells migration may contribute to neointimal hyperplasia.Functional analysis using 1-EBIO and Bradykinin produced hyperpolarization of neointimal but not medial myocytes, which indicated the expression of functional endothelial SK3 and IKCa in the former and not in the latter. The expression of IKCa and SK3 within the neointimal layer suggested that some degree of recovery of both endothelial as well as smooth muscle regeneration had occurred. Future development of selective modulators of IKCa and SK3 channels may decrease the progression of ISR and improve coronary vascular function after stent placement, and is an area for future investigation

    Incorporating Inertia Into Multi-Agent Systems

    We consider a model that demonstrates the crucial role of inertia and stickiness in multi-agent systems, based on the Minority Game (MG). The inertia of an agent is introduced into the game model by allowing agents to apply hypothesis testing when choosing their best strategies, thereby reducing their reactivity towards changes in the environment. We find by extensive numerical simulations that our game shows a remarkable improvement of global cooperation throughout the whole phase space. In other words, the maladaptation behavior due to over-reaction of agents is removed. These agents are also shown to be advantageous over the standard ones, which are sometimes too sensitive to attain a fair success rate. We also calculate analytically the minimum amount of inertia needed to achieve the above improvement. Our calculation is consistent with the numerical simulation results. Finally, we review some related works in the field that show similar behaviors and compare them to our work.Comment: extensively revised, 8 pages, 10 figures in revtex
