    Assessment of thermal instabilities and oscillations in multifinger heterojunction bipolar transistors through a harmonic-balance-based CAD-oriented dynamic stability analysis technique

    We present a novel analysis of thermal instabilities and oscillations in multifinger heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBTs), based on a harmonic-balance computer-aided-design (CAD)-oriented approach to the dynamic stability assessment. The stability analysis is carried out in time-periodic dynamic conditions by calculating the Floquet multipliers of the limit cycle representing the HBT working point. Such a computation is performed directly in the frequency domain, on the basis of the Jacobian of the harmonic-balance problem yielding the limit cycle. The corresponding stability assessment is rigorous, and the efficient calculation method makes it readily implementable in CAD tools, thus allowing for circuit and device optimization. Results on three- and four-finger layouts are presented, including closed-form oscillation criteria for two-finger device

    Headache disorders as risk factors for sleep disturbances in school aged children.

    Several epidemiological studies have shown the presence of comorbidity between various types of sleep disorders and different headache subtypes. Migraine without aura is a sensitive risk factor for disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep (odds ratio (OR) 8.2500), and chronic tension-type headache for sleep breathing disorders (OR 15.231), but headache disorder is a cumulative risk factor for disorders of excessive somnolence (OR 15.061). This result has not been reported in the clinical literature. © Springer-Verlag Italia 2005

    La producción poética quevediana —especialmente de tipo amoroso y laudatorio— muestra una evidente predilección del autor hacia la imagen del volcán en sus distintas variedades connotativas: simbólica, mitológica y de reevocación paisajística. El frecuente empleo de tal imagen (que en la poesía amorosa se relaciona casi sólo con la tópica antítesis petrarquista de nieve y fuego exasperada por la recurrente asociación al lexema venas, mientras que en los poemas encomiásticos es casi siempre el vehículo para la evocación del episodio mítico de la Gigantomaquia) y su amplificación expresiva encuentran su apropiada colocación en un contexto de experimentación poética que parece ajeno a la verdadera tradición petrarquista. Quevedo’s love and encomiastic poetry shows his interest in the employ of the volcano image in its symbolic, mythological and descriptive approaches. The frequent use of this image (usually associated with the snow-fire antithetical courteous topic in the love poetry and with the mythological giants defying the Olympus in the laudatory poetry) and its expressive amplification find their real placing in a poetic experimentation context detached from the true Petrarchist tradition

    The Remains of the Day: The International Economic Order in the Era of Disintegration

    The last two decades of the XX century have been marked by a vigorous acceleration of international economic integration both at a global and regional level. States accepted pervasive constraints on their national decision-making in the hope that stability and predictability would favor economic growth. This model of international economic integration, however, has recently shown worrying signs of ‘disintegration’. Disintegration manifests itself both as disintegration of the international legal regimes which compose the international economic order; and disintegration through law, namely the social, economic and environmental disintegration phenomena,triggered or at leastfacilitated by these regimes. Relying on the paradox integration/disintegration as an analytical framework, this article draws a blueprint of the various disintegration phenomena, which are further analyzed in the individual contributions to this Special Issue. It seeks to identify a relationship betweenthetwo dimensions of disintegration and detect possible correlation patterns. Last, after engaging with the different normative alternatives put forward by the contributors, it concludes by calling for a rethinking of the traditional approach to international economic integration. This reconceptualization should be premised on the full realization that the current model entails a great deal of environmental and social ‘hidden costs’

    Is type 2 diabetes really resolved after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy? Glucose variability studied by continuous glucose monitoring

    The study was carried out on type 2 diabetic obese patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). Patients underwent regular glycemic controls throughout 3 years and all patients were defined cured from diabetes according to conventional criteria defined as normalization of fasting glucose levels and glycated hemoglobin in absence of antidiabetic therapy. After 3 years of follow-up, Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) was performed in each patient to better clarify the remission of diabetes. In this study, we found that the diabetes resolution after LSG occurred in 40% of patients; in the other 60%, even if they showed a normal fasting glycemia and A1c, patients spent a lot of time in hyperglycemia. During the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), we found that 2 h postload glucose determinations revealed overt diabetes only in a small group of patients and might be insufficient to exclude the diagnosis of diabetes in the other patients who spent a lot of time in hyperglycemia, even if they showed a normal glycemia (<140 mg/dL) at 120 minutes OGTT. These interesting data could help clinicians to better individualize patients in which diabetes is not resolved and who could need more attention in order to prevent chronic complications of diabetes

    Local seismic response studies in the north-western portion of the August 24th, 2016 Mw 6.0 earthquake affected area. The case of Visso village (Central Apennines).

    In this work, we investigate the possible causes of the differential damaging observed in Visso village (Central Apennines, about 28 km north from the August 24th, 2016 Mw 6.0 earthquake epicenter). Following insights from the available geological cartography at 1:10.000 scale, a preliminary geophysical survey has been performed in the damaged area in order to constrain geometries and extent of the subsoil lithotypes. Then, these results have been used to retrieve a Vs profile close to the most heavily damaged buildings. This latter has been used as input for a numerical analysis aimed at deriving the motion at the ground level in the study area. In particular, a linear equivalent simulation has been performed by means of EERA code and the waveform has been obtained convolving the time history recorded during the August 24th, 2016 mainshock at Spoleto Monteluco (SPM) site. Our preliminary results indicate a possible correlation of damaging to the thickness and shape of the geological units. Nevertheless, further analyses are necessary to highlight any 2D basin and / non- linear soil behaviour effects in order to compare them to the intrinsic buildings vulnerability, according to the EMS98 guidelines

    Ferritin nanovehicle for targeted delivery of cytochrome C to cancer cells

    In this work, we have exploited the unique properties of a chimeric archaeal-human ferritin to encapsulate, deliver and release cytochrome c and induce apoptosis in a myeloid leukemia cell line. The chimeric protein combines the versatility in 24-meric assembly and cargo incorporation capability of Archaeglobus fulgidus ferritin with specific binding of human H ferritin to CD71, the “heavy duty” carrier responsible for transferrin-iron uptake. Delivery of ferritin-encapsulated cytochrome C to the Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) NB4 cell line, highly resistant to transfection by conventional methods, was successfully achieved in vitro. The effective liberation of cytochrome C within the cytosolic environment, demonstrated by double fluorescent labelling, induced apoptosis in the cancer cells

    Populations in many countries are ageing at a rapid pace which is expected to rise over the coming years. Health and social care provision and infrastructure need to respond to the ageing population and its related conditions such as dementia. The healthcare built environment can impact on people with dementia and the care pathway is highly relevant to quality of life, patients, residents, family, staff and carers. Evidence-based design solutions and best practice can help to improve the quality of life and deliver value for money during a period of rapid change where long term solutions relating to the healthcare environment are requrired. Research and pilot studies can help to demonstrate the benefits of evidence-based design and best practice for integrated care delivery. This paper explores the current trend and future oportunities to deliver dementia-friendly environments and integrated care through gathering of evidence, development of best practice guidance and integration of care delivery
