    Direct Evidence for a Magnetic f-electron Mediated Cooper Pairing Mechanism of Heavy Fermion Superconductivity in CeCoIn5

    To identify the microscopic mechanism of heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is an unresolved challenge in quantum matter studies; it may also relate closely to finding the pairing mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. Magnetically mediated Cooper pairing has long been the conjectured basis of heavy-fermion superconductivity but no direct verification of this hypothesis was achievable. Here, we use a novel approach based on precision measurements of the heavy-fermion band structure using quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging, to reveal quantitatively the momentum-space (k-space) structure of the f-electron magnetic interactions of CeCoIn5. Then, by solving the superconducting gap equations on the two heavy-fermion bands Ekα,βE_k^{\alpha,\beta} with these magnetic interactions as mediators of the Cooper pairing, we derive a series of quantitative predictions about the superconductive state. The agreement found between these diverse predictions and the measured characteristics of superconducting CeCoIn5, then provides direct evidence that the heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is indeed mediated by the f-electron magnetism.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary Information: 31 pages, 5 figure

    Exposure databases and exposure surveillance : promise and practice

    Based on recent developments in occupational health and a review of industry practices, it is argued that integrated exposure database and surveillance systems hold considerable promise for improving workplace health and safety. A foundation from which to build practical and effective exposure surveillance systems is proposed based on the integration of recent developments in electronic exposure databases, the codification of exposure assessment practice, and the theory and practice of public health surveillance. The merging of parallel, but until now largely separate, efforts in these areas into exposure surveillance systems combines unique strengths from each subdiscipline. The promise of exposure database and surveillance systems, however, is yet to be realized. Exposure surveillance practices in general industry are reviewed based on the published literature as well as an Internet survey of three prominent industrial hygiene e-mail lists. Although the benefits of exposure surveillance are many, relatively few organizations use electronic exposure databases, and even fewer have active exposure surveillance systems. Implementation of exposure databases and surveillance systems can likely be improved by the development of systems that are more responsive to workplace or organizational-level needs. An overview of exposure database software packages provides guidance to readers considering the implementation of commercially available systems. Strategies for improving the implementation of exposure database and surveillance systems are outlined. A companion report in this issue on the development and pilot testing of a workplace-level exposure surveillance system concretely illustrates the application of the conceptual framework proposed

    The Rapidly Rotating, Hydrogen Deficient, Hot Post-Asymptotic Giant Branch Star ZNG 1 in the Globular Cluster M5

    We report observations of the hot post-asymptotic giant branch star ZNG 1 in the globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904) with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). From the resulting spectrum, we derive an effective temperature T_eff = 44300 +/- 300 K, a surface gravity log g = 4.3 +/- 0.1, a rotational velocity v sin i = 170 +/- 20 km/s, and a luminosity log (L/L_sun) = 3.52 +/- 0.04. The atmosphere is helium-rich (Y = 0.93), with enhanced carbon (2.6% by mass), nitrogen (0.51%) and oxygen (0.37%) abundances. The spectrum shows evidence for a wind with terminal velocity near 1000 km/s and an expanding shell of carbon- and nitrogen-rich material around the star. The abundance pattern of ZNG 1 is suggestive of the ``born-again'' scenario, whereby a star on the white-dwarf cooling curve undergoes a very late shell flash and returns to the AGB, but the star's rapid rotation is more easily explained by a previous interaction with a binary companion.Comment: 8 pages, 2 PostScript figures, Latex with emulateapj5.     Significance of the pericardium in human subjects: Effects on left ventricular volume, pressure and ejection

    To assess the effect of the pericardium, left ventricular systolic function and diastolic compliance were studied in 15 patients before and after pericardiotomy during coronary artery surgery. Using first pass radionuclide angiography, curves for left ventricular systolic function (stroke work versus end-diastolic volume) and a measure of diastolic compliance (pulmonary capillary wedge pressure versus end-diastolic volume) were generated by changing body position to alter venous return. Left ventricular end-diastolic volume ranged from 41 to 111 ml/m2and pulmonary capillary wedge pressure from 0 to 24 mm Hg.No significant changes were found in blood pressure (150/83 to 148/82 mm Hg), heart rate (66.7 to 67.1 beats/min), cardiac index (2.38 to 2.41 liters/min per m2), ejection fraction (0.56 to 0.54), end-systolic volume index (31.4 to 32.2 ml/m2), end-diastolic volume index (65.9 to 69.5 ml/m2) or pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (7.5 to 7.3 mm Hg). The pericardium did not affect the curves relating stroke work and end-diastolic volume or those relating pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and end-diastolic volume. Thus, when filling pressure and volume are normal or only moderately elevated, the pericardium does not appear to affect left ventricular systolic function or diastolic compliance in patients

    Stm1p alters the ribosome association of eukaryotic elongation factor 3 and affects translation elongation

    Stm1p is a Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein that is primarily associated with cytosolic 80S ribosomes and polysomes. Several lines of evidence suggest that Stm1p plays a role in translation under nutrient stress conditions, although its mechanism of action is not yet known. In this study, we show that yeast lacking Stm1p (stm1Δ) are hypersensitive to the translation inhibitor anisomycin, which affects the peptidyl transferase reaction in translation elongation, but show little hypersensitivity to other translation inhibitors such as paromomycin and hygromycin B, which affect translation fidelity. Ribosomes isolated from stm1Δ yeast have intrinsically elevated levels of eukaryotic elongation factor 3 (eEF3) associated with them. Overexpression of eEF3 in cells lacking Stm1p results in a growth defect phenotype and increased anisomycin sensitivity. In addition, ribosomes with increased levels of Stm1p exhibit decreased association with eEF3. Taken together, our data indicate that Stm1p plays a complementary role to eEF3 in translation

    The Effect of Three-Dimensional Freestream Disturbances on the Supersonic Flow Past a Wedge

    The interaction between a shock wave (attached to a wedge) and small amplitude, three-dimensional disturbances of a uniform, supersonic, freestream flow are investigated. The paper extends the two-dimensional study of Duck et al, through the use of vector potentials, which render the problem tractable by the same techniques as in the two-dimensional case, in particular by expansion of the solution by means of a Fourier-Bessel series, in appropriately chosen coordinates. Results are presented for specific classes of freestream disturbances, and the study shows conclusively that the shock is stable to all classes of disturbances (i.e. time periodic perturbations to the shock do not grow downstream), provided the flow downstream of the shock is supersonic (loosely corresponding to the weak shock solution). This is shown from our numerical results and also by asymptotic analysis of the Fourier-Bessel series, valid far downstream of the shock

    Integrating workplace exposure databases for occupational medicine services and epidemiologic studies at a former nuclear weapons facility

    We outline methods for integrating epidemiologic and industrial hygiene data systems for the purpose of exposure estimation, exposure surveillance, worker notification, and occupational medicine practice. We present examples of these methods from our work at the Rocky Flats Plant?a former nuclear weapons facility that fabricated plutonium triggers for nuclear weapons and is now being decontaminated and decommissioned. The weapons production processes exposed workers to plutonium, gamma photons, neutrons, beryllium, asbestos, and several hazardous chemical agents, including chlorinated hydrocarbons and heavy metals. We developed a job exposure matrix (JEM) for estimating exposures to 10 chemical agents in 20 buildings for 120 different job categories over a production history spanning 34 years. With the JEM, we estimated lifetime chemical exposures for about 12,000 of the 16,000 former production workers. We show how the JEM database is used to estimate cumulative exposures over different time periods for epidemiological studies and to provide notification and determine eligibility for a medical screening program developed for former workers. We designed an industrial hygiene data system for maintaining exposure data for current cleanup workers. We describe how this system can be used for exposure surveillance and linked with the JEM and databases on radiation doses to develop lifetime exposure histories and to determine appropriate medical monitoring tests for current cleanup workers. We also present time-line-based graphical methods for reviewing and correcting exposure estimates and reporting them to individual workers
