    Global symplectic coordinates on gradient Kaehler-Ricci solitons

    A classical result of D. McDuff asserts that a simply-connected complete Kaehler manifold (M,g,ω)(M,g,\omega) with non positive sectional curvature admits global symplectic coordinates through a symplectomorphism Ψ:MR2n\Psi: M\rightarrow R^{2n} (where nn is the complex dimension of MM), satisfying the following property (proved by E. Ciriza): the image Ψ(T)\Psi (T) of any complex totally geodesic submanifold TMT\subset M through the point pp such that Ψ(p)=0\Psi(p)=0, is a complex linear subspace of CnR2nC^n \simeq R^{2n}. The aim of this paper is to exhibit, for all positive integers nn, examples of nn-dimensional complete Kaehler manifolds with non-negative sectional curvature globally symplectomorphic to R2nR^{2n} through a symplectomorphism satisfying Ciriza's property.Comment: 8 page

    Visual Art, a Pedagogical Tool of Plural Knowledge between Creative Productions and Community Ties: a Theoretical-Practical Research Between Italy and Kenya

    Educational places are changed into meaningful spaces where it is possible to unleash creativity and discover plural perspectives when visual art becomes a pedagogical tool, which activates cooperative dynamics, co-building knowledge, and relational skills. This hypothesis was verified as a part of the European project «TICASS» – Technologies of Imaging in Communication, Art and Social Sciences (2017-2021) –, carried out between Europe and Africa. Starting from the reference framework, various interpretations of visual languages and ways of perception of individuals belonging to different socio-cultural contexts were investigated (Lester, 2010). This contribution introduces paths and outcomes of the research action interventions, carried out by a psycho-pedagogical research team in kindergartens and primary schools since 2018, involving over 100 children aged 3 to 5 in Italy and over 300 children aged 8 to 12 in Kenya (Deluigi, 2019; Deluigi, Machova & Stara, 2021). Methodology: The collection of qualitative data took place through participatory observation, supervision of the workshops, and the ongoing critical reflection of the research group. This analysis deals with the use of the image as a stimulus carefully researched and introduced through silent books (Zizioli, 2017) with a less structured input to leave room for a creative process. Thus, children become producers of images and imaginaries drawn from their very personal creativity (Malaguzzi, 1998). Results/Conclusions: The results of the workshops carried out can motivate educators, teachers, and pedagogues to design interactive experiences among peers (including adults), through the use of creative languages as mediators of community learning processes in an intercultural and transcultural framework (Cooper & Sjostrom, 2006)

    The synthesis of nitrogen-based heterocycles has always been considered essential in developing pharmaceuticals in medicine and agriculture. This explains why various synthetic approaches have been proposed in recent decades. However performing as methods, they often imply harsh conditions or the employment of toxic solvents and dangerous reagents. Mechanochemistry is undoubtedly one of the most promising technologies currently used for reducing any possible environmental impact, addressing the worldwide interest in counteracting environmental pollution. Following this line, we propose a new mechanochemical protocol for synthesizing various heterocyclic classes by exploiting thiourea dioxide (TDO)'s reducing proprieties and electrophilic nature. Simultaneously exploiting the low cost of a component of the textile industry such as TDO and all the advantages brought by a green technique such as mechanochemistry, we plot a route towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly methodology for preparing heterocyclic moieties

    Mechanochemical transformations have made chemists enter unknown territories, forcing a different chemistry perspective. While questioning or revisiting familiar concepts belonging to solution chemistry, mechanochemistry has broken new ground, especially in the panorama of organic synthesis. Not only does it foster new “thinking outside the box”, but it also has opened new reaction paths, allowing to overcome the weaknesses of traditional chemistry exactly where the use of well-established solution-based methodologies rules out progress. In this Review, the reader is introduced to an intriguing research subject not yet fully explored and waiting for improved understanding. Indeed, the study is mainly focused on organic transformations that, although impossible in solution, become possible under mechanochemical processing conditions, simultaneously entailing innovation and expanding the chemical space

    Balanced metrics on Cartan and Cartan-Hartogs domains

    This paper consists of two results dealing with balanced metrics (in S. Donaldson terminology) on nonconpact complex manifolds. In the first one we describe all balanced metrics on Cartan domains. In the second one we show that the only Cartan-Hartogs domain which admits a balanced metric is the complex hyperbolic space. By combining these results with those obtained in [13] (Kaehler-Einstein submanifolds of the infinite dimensional projective space, to appear in Mathematische Annalen) we also provide the first example of complete, Kaehler-Einstein and projectively induced metric g such that αg\alpha g is not balanced for all α>0\alpha >0.Comment: 11 page

    Analysis of Score-Level Fusion Rules for Deepfake Detection

    Deepfake detection is of fundamental importance to preserve the reliability of multimedia communications. Modern deepfake detection systems are often specialized on one or more types of manipulation but are not able to generalize. On the other hand, when properly designed, ensemble learning and fusion techniques can reduce this issue. In this paper, we exploit the complementarity of different individual classifiers and evaluate which fusion rules are best suited to increase the generalization capacity of modern deepfake detection systems. We also give some insights to designers for selecting the most appropriate approach

    DISTRIBUTION OF SPAWNING AND NURSERY GROUNDS FOR DEEP–WATER RED SHRIMPS IN THE CENTRAL WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN SEA

    The presence of spawning and nursery grounds of Aristeids in the central western Mediterranean Sea were investigated using fishery-independent data (trawl surveys, 1994–2012). Spatial distributions were generated for mature animals and recruits, for both spring/summer and autumn data, using an inverse distance weighted deterministic interpolation. The persistence index was used to identify stable spawning and nursery grounds in the Sardinian slope region for Aristaeomorpha foliacea and Aristeus antennatus. Areas of aggregation for recruits and mature females appear connected with important physical habitat features. The analysis also suggests a seasonal bathymetric distribution for nursery areas. The recruits of A. foliacea are located in the upper part of the continental slope (377-450 m) in spring-summer and reach greater depths (468-628 m) in autumn. For A. antennatus, for which nursery areas only emerge in autumn, there is presumably an opposite ontogenic migration, from deep sea to upper slope, during the summer (575-681 m). Results indicate also a partial overlap between the nursery and spawning grounds of both species. In this particular areas, local environmental conditions such as upwelling events or the presence of canyons and seamounts seem to play an important role in their distribution. This study generated also relevant information on the spatial and temporal distribution of seasonal or persistent aggregations of spawners and recruits, providing scientific elements to suggest the feasibility of protecting these important resources

    EEG functional network topology is associated with disability in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

    Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is one of the most severe neurodegenerative diseases, which is known to affect upper and lower motor neurons. In contrast to the classical tenet that ALS represents the outcome of extensive and progressive impairment of a fixed set of motor connections, recent neuroimaging findings suggest that the disease spreads along vast non-motor connections. Here, we hypothesised that functional network topology is perturbed in ALS, and that this reorganization is associated with disability. We tested this hypothesis in 21 patients affected by ALS at several stages of impairment using resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) and compared the results to 16 age-matched healthy controls. We estimated functional connectivity using the Phase Lag Index (PLI), and characterized the network topology using the minimum spanning tree (MST). We found a significant difference between groups in terms of MST dissimilarity and MST leaf fraction in the beta band. Moreover, some MST parameters (leaf, hierarchy and kappa) significantly correlated with disability. These findings suggest that the topology of resting-state functional networks in ALS is affected by the disease in relation to disability. EEG network analysis may be of help in monitoring and evaluating the clinical status of ALS patients
