Multi-method geophysical measurements for soil science investigations in the vadose zone
International audienceWe studied the changes of geophysical parameters on a soil wall of the testfield Grenzhof (University of Heidelberg). The unsaturated materials investigated range from coarse-grain gravel to sandy loam. Ground-penetrating radar, ultrasound transmission and complex conductivity measurements were applied as geophysical methods. The measured parameters were used to calculate soil parameters such as porosity, water content, density and grain surface area necessary to obtain geohydraulic parameters such as hydraulic conductivity, field capacity and retention parameters. Soil samples were taken and analysed regarding porosity, apparent density, true density and internal surface. The comparison between petrophysical data from the laboratory and from geophysical measurements showed good correlations for the majority of the data
Estimating the number of planets that PLATO can detect
The PLATO mission is scheduled for launch in 2026. This study aims to
estimate the number of exoplanets that PLATO can detect as a function of
planetary size and period, stellar brightness, and observing strategy options.
Deviations from these estimates will be informative of the true occurrence
rates of planets, which helps constraining planet formation models. For this
purpose, we developed the Planet Yield for PLATO estimator (PYPE), which adopts
a statistical approach. We apply given occurrence rates from planet formation
models and from different search and vetting pipelines for the Kepler data. We
estimate the stellar sample to be observed by PLATO using a fraction of the
all-sky PLATO stellar input catalog (PIC). PLATO detection efficiencies are
calculated under different assumptions that are presented in detail in the
text. The results presented here primarily consider the current baseline
observing duration of four years. We find that the expected PLATO planet yield
increases rapidly over the first year and begins to saturate after two years. A
nominal (2+2) four-year mission could yield about several thousand to several
tens of thousands of planets, depending on the assumed planet occurrence rates.
We estimate a minimum of 500 Earth-size (0.8-1.25 RE) planets, about a dozen of
which would reside in a 250-500d period bin around G stars. We find that
one-third of the detected planets are around stars bright enough (V )
for RV-follow-up observations. We find that a three-year-long observation
followed by 6 two-month short observations (3+1 years) yield roughly twice as
many planets as two long observations of two years (2+2 years). The former
strategy is dominated by short-period planets, while the latter is more
beneficial for detecting earths in the habitable zone.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted by A&A (July 5, 2023
Clustering and the hyperbolic geometry of complex networks
Clustering is a fundamental property of complex networks and it is the
mathematical expression of a ubiquitous phenomenon that arises in various types
of self-organized networks such as biological networks, computer networks or
social networks. In this paper, we consider what is called the global
clustering coefficient of random graphs on the hyperbolic plane. This model of
random graphs was proposed recently by Krioukov et al. as a mathematical model
of complex networks, under the fundamental assumption that hyperbolic geometry
underlies the structure of these networks. We give a rigorous analysis of
clustering and characterize the global clustering coefficient in terms of the
parameters of the model. We show how the global clustering coefficient can be
tuned by these parameters and we give an explicit formula for this function.Comment: 51 pages, 1 figur
Anharmonic double-phonon excitations in the interacting boson model
Double- vibrations in deformed nuclei are analyzed in the context of
the interacting boson model. A simple extension of the original version of the
model towards higher-order interactions is required to explain the observed
anharmonicities of nuclear vibrations. The influence of three- and four-body
interactions on the moments of inertia of ground- and -bands, and on
the relative position of single- and double- bands is studied
in detail. As an example of a realistic calculation, spectra and transitions of
the highly -anharmonic nuclei Dy, Er, and Er
are interpreted in this approach.Comment: 38 pages, TeX (ReVTeX). 15 ps figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Constraint Satisfaction with Counting Quantifiers
We initiate the study of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) in the
presence of counting quantifiers, which may be seen as variants of CSPs in the
mould of quantified CSPs (QCSPs). We show that a single counting quantifier
strictly between exists^1:=exists and exists^n:=forall (the domain being of
size n) already affords the maximal possible complexity of QCSPs (which have
both exists and forall), being Pspace-complete for a suitably chosen template.
Next, we focus on the complexity of subsets of counting quantifiers on clique
and cycle templates. For cycles we give a full trichotomy -- all such problems
are in L, NP-complete or Pspace-complete. For cliques we come close to a
similar trichotomy, but one case remains outstanding. Afterwards, we consider
the generalisation of CSPs in which we augment the extant quantifier
exists^1:=exists with the quantifier exists^j (j not 1). Such a CSP is already
NP-hard on non-bipartite graph templates. We explore the situation of this
generalised CSP on bipartite templates, giving various conditions for both
tractability and hardness -- culminating in a classification theorem for
general graphs. Finally, we use counting quantifiers to solve the complexity of
a concrete QCSP whose complexity was previously open
Allerdings erscheinen Ausnahmen in bestimmten Fällen gerechtfertigt.
