Reasoning Under Uncertainty: Towards Collaborative Interactive Machine Learning
In this paper, we present the current state-of-the-art of decision making (DM) and machine learning (ML) and bridge the two research domains to create an integrated approach of complex problem solving based on human and computational agents. We present a novel classification of ML, emphasizing the human-in-the-loop in interactive ML (iML) and more specific on collaborative interactive ML (ciML), which we understand as a deep integrated version of iML, where humans and algorithms work hand in hand to solve complex problems. Both humans and computers have specific strengths and weaknesses and integrating humans into machine learning processes might be a very efficient way for tackling problems. This approach bears immense research potential for various domains, e.g., in health informatics or in industrial applications. We outline open questions and name future challenges that have to be addressed by the research community to enable the use of collaborative interactive machine learning for problem solving in a large scale
Evidence of contamination by oil and oil products in the Santos-Sao Vicente estuary, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Different components of the mixed function oxidase (MFO) system and the levels of fluorescent aromatic compounds in bile (FACs) were measured in Cathorops spixii in order to assess the impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Fish were sampled in an estuary (Santos/Sao Vicente) with a history of contamination by PAHs, mainly due to the presence of the industrial complex of Cubatao city and of another of low anthropogenic influence (Cananeia) on the Brazilian coast. FACs were higher in fish from the polluted site, and the PAH 5 and 6-ring metabolites were the most frequent - with 14% and 15%, respectively. Levels of the different components of the MFO system showed the same variation profile as the FACs for both estuaries. Liver damages and nuclear abnormalities in erythrocytes of Atherinella brasiliensis (Actynopterigii, Atherinopsidade) from two beaches in Southeast of Brazil
There are few environmental studies using biomarkers for the species Atherinella brasiliensis in Brazil. In the present work, the presence of hepatic histopathological lesions and nuclear abnormalities in erythrocytes were investigated in A. brasiliensis from Lamberto, a beach under influence of domestic wastes and marine activities. For comparison, fish were also sampled in Puruba, a non-polluted beach, located in the northeastern of São Paulo State. The frequency of lesions found in liver was in higher numbers in individuals from Lamberto than Puruba beach. The most critical injuries observed in A. brasiliensis were the presence of necrotic areas, leucocytes infiltration and piknotic nucleus. A high occurrence of cells with vacuolization was also observed. The hepatic lesion index of the fish from Lamberto beach showed significant high values (Iorg=13) when compared with fish from Puruba beach (Iorg=7) suggesting the influence of the several human activities in the studied site. Notched and blebed nucleous were observed in this study, and significant differences were found between the studied sites. However, these differences did not reflect the total nuclear alterations.<br>Existem poucos estudos no Brasil usando biomarcadores em Atherinella brasiliensis. No presente trabalho foram investigadas a presença de lesões histopatológicas hepáticas e as alterações nucleares em eritrócitos de A. brasiliensis amostrados na praia do Lamberto, local submetido à influência de resíduos domésticos e atividades humanas. Para comparação, indivíduos da espécie foram também amostrados na praia de Puruba, local não impactado, localizado no noroeste do estado de São Paulo. Peixes provenientes da praia do Lamberto apresentaram lesões hepáticas em número maior do que aqueles da praia de Puruba. Áreas necróticas, infiltração de leucócitos e núcleos picnóticos foram os danos de maior importância observados em A. brasiliensis, apesar de uma elevada ocorrência de vacuolização também ter sido verificada. O índice de lesão hepática dos peixes da praia do Lamberto mostrou valores significantemente maiores (Iorg=13) quando comparados com o dos peixes da praia de Puruba (Iorg=7), sugerindo influência das diversas atividades humanas existentes na área avaliada. Em relação aos núcleos "notched" e "blebed", foram observadas diferenças significativas entre as áreas, mas não para as alterações nucleares totais
Chemical contamination assessment in mangrove-lined Caribbean coastal systems using the oyster Crassostrea rhizophorae as biomonitor species
This paper aims to contribute to the use of mangrove
cupped oyster, Crassostrea rhizophorae, as a biomonitor
species for chemical contamination assessment in
mangrove-lined Caribbean coastal systems. Sampling was
carried out in eight localities (three in Nicaragua and five in
Colombia) with different types and levels of contamination.
Oysters were collected during the rainy and dry seasons of
2012–2013 and the tissue concentrations of metals, polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and persistent organic pollutants
(POPs) were determined. Low tissue concentrations of
metals (except Hg) and PAHs; moderate-to-high tissue concentrations
of Hg, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), and
dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethanes (DDTs); detectable levels
of chlorpyrifos, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (mainly
CB28, CB118, CB138 and CB 153) and brominated diphenyl
ethers 85 (BDE85); and negligible levels of musks were recorded
in Nicaraguan oysters. A distinct profile of POPs was
identified in Colombia, where the tissue concentrations of
PCBs and synthetic musk fragrances were low to moderate,
and Ag, As, Cd, Pb, and PAHs ranged from moderate to extremely
high. Overall, the values recorded for HCHs, DDTs
and PCBs in Nicaraguan mangrove cupped oysters greatly
exceeded the reference values in tissues of C. rhizophorae
from the Wider Caribbean Region, whereas only the levels
of PCBs were occasionally surpassed in Colombia. Different
contaminant profiles were distinguished between oysters from
Nicaragua and Colombia in radar plots constructed using the
main groups of contaminants (metals, PAHs, musks, PCBs,
and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)). Likewise, integrated
pollution indices revealed differences in the levels of contaminants.
Moreover, the profiles and levels in oyster tissues also
varied with season. Thus, principal component analysis clearly
discriminated Nicaraguan and Colombian localities and, especially
in Colombia, seasonal trends in chemical contamination
and differences amongst localities were evidenced. The geographical
and environmental disparity of the studied scenarios
may represent to a large extent the diversity of mangrove-lined
Caribbean coastal systems and therefore the present results
support the use of C. rhizophorae as suitable biomonitor species
at Caribbean regional scale, where seasonal variability
is a major factor controlling pollutant mobility and
bioavailability
