Preliminary Full-Scale Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Wing Ducts for Radiators, Special Report
Wing ducts for liquid-cooled engine radiators have been investigated in the N.A.C.A. full-scale wind tunnel on a large model airplane. Th e tests were made to determine the relative merits of several types of duct and radiator installations for an airplane of a particular des ign. In the test program the principal duct dimensions were system atically varied, and the results are therefore somewhat applicable to the general problems of wing duct design, although they should be co nsidered as preliminary and only indicative of the inherent possibil ities
A New Handle on de Sitter Compactifications
We construct a large new class of de Sitter (and anti de Sitter) vacua of
critical string theory from flux compactifications on products of Riemann
surfaces. In the construction, the leading effects stabilizing the moduli are
perturbative. We show that these effects self-consistently dominate over
standard estimates for further and quantum corrections, via

Full Scale Span Load Distribution on a Tapered Wing with Split Flaps of Various Spans
Pressure-distribution tests were conducted in the full-scale wind tunnel on a 2:1 tapered U.S.A. 45 airfoil equipped with 20 percent chord split trailing-edge flaps of various spans. A special installation was employed in the tests utilizing a half-span airfoil mounted vertically above a reflection plane. The airfoil has a constant chord center section and rounded tips and is tapered in thickness from 18 percent c at the root to 9 percent c at the tip. The aerodynamic characteristics, given by the usual dimension less coefficients, are presented graphically as functions of flap span and angle of attack as well as by semispan load diagrams. The results indicate, in general, that only a relatively small increase in the normal-force coefficient is to be expected by extending the flap span of an airfoil-flap combination, similar to the one tested, beyond 70 percent of the wing span
Simple de Sitter Solutions
We present a framework for de Sitter model building in type IIA string
theory, illustrated with specific examples. We find metastable dS minima of the
potential for moduli obtained from a compactification on a product of two Nil
three-manifolds (which have negative scalar curvature) combined with
orientifolds, branes, fractional Chern-Simons forms, and fluxes. As a discrete
quantum number is taken large, the curvature, field strengths, inverse volume,
and four dimensional string coupling become parametrically small, and the de
Sitter Hubble scale can be tuned parametrically smaller than the scales of the
moduli, KK, and winding mode masses. A subtle point in the construction is that
although the curvature remains consistently weak, the circle fibers of the
nilmanifolds become very small in this limit (though this is avoided in
illustrative solutions at modest values of the parameters). In the simplest
version of the construction, the heaviest moduli masses are parametrically of
the same order as the lightest KK and winding masses. However, we provide a
method for separating these marginally overlapping scales, and more generally
the underlying supersymmetry of the model protects against large corrections to

The GHOSTS survey. II. The diversity of Halo Color and Metallicity Profiles of Massive Disk Galaxies
We study the stellar halo color properties of six nearby massive highly
inclined disk galaxies using Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys
and Wide Field Camera 3 observations in both F606W and F814W filters from the
GHOSTS survey. The observed fields, placed both along the minor and major axis
of each galaxy, probe the stellar outskirts out to projected distances of ~
50-70 kpc from their galactic centre along the minor axis. The 50% completeness
levels of the color magnitude diagrams are typically at two mag below the tip
of the red giant branch. We find that all galaxies have extended stellar halos
out to ~ 50 kpc and two out to ~ 70 kpc. We determined the halo color
distribution and color profile for each galaxy using the median colors of stars
in the RGB. Within each galaxy we find variations in the median colors as a
function of radius which likely indicates population variations, reflecting
that their outskirts were built from several small accreted objects. We find
that half of the galaxies (NGC 0891, NGC 4565, and NGC 7814) present a clear
negative color gradient, reflecting a declining metallicity in their halos; the
other have no significant color or population gradient. In addition,
notwithstanding the modest sample size of galaxies, there is no strong
correlation between their halo color/metallicity or gradient with galaxy's
properties such as rotational velocity or stellar mass. The diversity in halo
color profiles observed in the GHOSTS galaxies qualitatively supports the
predicted galaxy-to-galaxy scatter in halo stellar properties; a consequence of

Creatine kinase expression and creatine phosphate accumulation are developmentally regulated during differentiation of mouse and human monocytes
We have studied the expression of creatine kinase (CK) and the accumulation of creatine phosphate during the differentiation of human and mouse peripheral blood monocytes. Mouse monocytes cultured for 24 h do not contain detectable levels of CK and creatine phosphate. However, resident tissue macrophages and inflammatory elicited macrophages obtained from the peritoneal cavities of mice have 70 and 300 mU per mg protein of CK activity and contain 3 and 6 mol of creatine phosphate per mol of ATP, respectively. The major isozyme of CK in these cells has been identified as the brain form. These findings suggest that the differentiation of monocytes into macrophages is associated with the expression of CK and the accumulation of creatine phosphate. We have found a similar pattern in human monocytes. Human blood monocytes, maintained in culture for 24 or 48 h, do not contain detectable levels of CK or creatine phosphate. Monocyte-derived macrophages (monocytes maintained in tissue cultures for 1 to 2 wk) have up to 100 mU per mg protein of CK activity and contain 0.5 mol of creatine phosphate per mol of ATP. Human macrophages express multiple isozymes of CK including the brain (BB) and possibly the mitochondrial forms of this enzyme. Thus, the expression of CK and the accumulation of creatine phosphate in human monocytes is induced by their in vitro cultivation. The induction of CK during in vitro cultivation occurs independently of the concentration of creatine in the medium. However, the size of the creatine phosphate pool varies with respect to extracellular creatine concentration. Creatine phosphate and CK are not detectable in freshly isolated human lymphocytes, polymorphonuclear leukocytes or erythrocytes, but are found in freshly isolated human platelets

effective potential that includes the stringy correction

New Attractors and Area Codes
In this note we give multiple examples of the recently proposed New
Attractors describing supersymmetric flux vacua and non-supersymmetric extremal
black holes in IIB string theory. Examples of non-supersymmetric extremal black
hole attractors arise on a hypersurface in . For flux vacua
on the orientifold of the same hypersurface existence of multiple basins of
attraction is established. It is explained that certain fluxes may give rise to
multiple supersymmetric flux vacua in a finite region on moduli space, say at
the Landau-Ginzburg point and close to conifold point. This suggests the
existence of multiple basins for flux vacua and domain walls in the landscape
