    Characteristics of sensory responses. Even though sensory responses are diverse and occur in different complex environments, it is possible to derive some characteristics common to all responses: 1) For a given subject the sensory response is unusual and abnormal because two conditions must be respected: the individuality of the response and the blind presentation of the samples. 2) When it hasn't been learned, the sensory response is, more or less, specific to the subject who gives the response. 3) The sensory response is not only a mechanical translation of events produced at the receptor level; it is an event which is largely cognitive. 4) The sensory response is changeable and unstable in time because of the nature of the nervous system and the conditions of taking the samples. 5) The sensory response is often obtained by means of verbal expression and the words may imperfectly translate the perception. Despite these characteristics, the sensory response is irreplaceable; it can be reliable when the operator who obtains it controls the experiment with care

    A noncommutative Sierpinski gasket

    A quantized version of the Sierpinski gasket is proposed, on purely topological grounds, as a C*-algebra A infinity with a suitable form of self-similarity. Several properties of A infinity are studied, in particular its nuclearity, the structure of ideals as well as the description of irreducible representations and extremal traces. A harmonic structure is introduced, giving rise to a self-similar Dirichlet form E. A spectral triple is also constructed, extending the one already known for the classical gasket, from which E can be reconstructed. Moreover we show that A infinity is a compact quantum metric space

    Demographic and socioeconomic disparity in nutrition: Application of a novel correlated Component Regression Approach

    OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the most important demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with diet quality, evaluated in terms of compliance with national dietary recommendations, selection of healthy and unhealthy food choices, energy density and food variety. We hypothesised that different demographic and socioeconomic factors may show disparate associations with diet quality. STUDY DESIGN: A nationwide, cross-sectional, population-based study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1352 apparently healthy and non-institutionalised subjects, aged 18–69 years, participated in the Observation of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Luxembourg (ORISCAV-LUX) study in 2007–2008. The participants attended the nearest study centre after a telephone appointment, and were interviewed by trained research staff. OUTCOME MEASURES: Diet quality as measured by 5 dietary indicators, namely, recommendation compliance index (RCI), recommended foods score (RFS), non-recommended foods score (non-RFS), energy density score (EDS), and dietary diversity score (DDS). The novel Correlated Component Regression (CCR) technique was used to determine the importance and magnitude of the association of each socioeconomic factor with diet quality, in a global analytic approach. RESULTS: Increasing age, being male and living below the poverty threshold were predominant factors associated with eating a high energy density diet. Education level was an important factor associated with healthy and adequate food choices, whereas economic resources were predominant factors associated with food diversity and energy density. CONCLUSIONS: Multiple demographic and socioeconomic circumstances were associated with different diet quality indicators. Efforts to improve diet quality for high-risk groups need an important public health focus

    Fredholm Modules on P.C.F. Self-Similar Fractals and their Conformal Geometry

    The aim of the present work is to show how, using the differential calculus associated to Dirichlet forms, it is possible to construct Fredholm modules on post critically finite fractals by regular harmonic structures. The modules are d-summable, the summability exponent d coinciding with the spectral dimension of the generalized laplacian operator associated with the regular harmonic structures. The characteristic tools of the noncommutative infinitesimal calculus allow to define a d-energy functional which is shown to be a self-similar conformal invariant.Comment: 16 page

    An XMM-Newton study of the sub-structure in M87's halo

    The high signal to noise and good point spread function of XMM have allowed the first detailed study of the interaction between the thermal and radio emitting plasma in the central regions of M87. We show that the X-ray emitting structure, previously seen by ROSAT, is thermal in nature and that the east and southwest extensions in M87's X-ray halo have a significantly lower temperature (kT= 1.5 keV) than the surrounding ambient medium (kT= 2.3 keV). There is little or no evidence for non-thermal emission with an upper limit on the contribution of a power law component of spectral index flatter than 3 being less than 1% of the flux in the region of the radio lobes.Comment: 6 pages, 8 color figures, to be published in A&A, number 36

    The COSPIX mission: focusing on the energetic and obscured Universe

    Tracing the formation and evolution of all supermassive black holes, including the obscured ones, understanding how black holes influence their surroundings and how matter behaves under extreme conditions, are recognized as key science objectives to be addressed by the next generation of instruments. These are the main goals of the COSPIX proposal, made to ESA in December 2010 in the context of its call for selection of the M3 mission. In addition, COSPIX, will also provide key measurements on the non thermal Universe, particularly in relation to the question of the acceleration of particles, as well as on many other fundamental questions as for example the energetic particle content of clusters of galaxies. COSPIX is proposed as an observatory operating from 0.3 to more than 100 keV. The payload features a single long focal length focusing telescope offering an effective area close to ten times larger than any scheduled focusing mission at 30 keV, an angular resolution better than 20 arcseconds in hard X-rays, and polarimetric capabilities within the same focal plane instrumentation.     On twisted Fourier analysis and convergence of Fourier series on discrete groups

    We study norm convergence and summability of Fourier series in the setting of reduced twisted group C∗C^*-algebras of discrete groups. For amenable groups, F{\o}lner nets give the key to Fej\'er summation. We show that Abel-Poisson summation holds for a large class of groups, including e.g. all Coxeter groups and all Gromov hyperbolic groups. As a tool in our presentation, we introduce notions of polynomial and subexponential H-growth for countable groups w.r.t. proper scale functions, usually chosen as length functions. These coincide with the classical notions of growth in the case of amenable groups.Comment: 35 pages; abridged, revised and update
