    Adaptação transcultural da escala de distonia cervical de Toronto (TWSTRS) para o português

    Cervical dystonia (CD) is a prevalent and incapacitating movement disorder which needs a thorough clinical evaluation of every patient to better tailor treatment strategies. In Brazil, there are no validated CD scales that measure the burden of dystonia. The aim of our study was to translate and adapt the Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS) to Brazilian Portuguese. After translation and back-translation according to international methods, a pre-test was carried out with 30 patients. Patients under 8 years of formal schooling had severe difficulty in understanding the whole scale. The scale went through a remodeling process, without loss of its conceptual and semantic properties. The new scale was tested in 15 patients, with good understanding scores. We are now in the process of validation of the adapted scale.Distonia cervical (DC) é um transtorno de movimento prevalente e incapacitante, sendo uma avaliação global e consistente de cada paciente necessária para a melhor intervenção diagnóstica e terapêutica. No Brasil, não há escalas validadas para avaliar o impacto da DC. O objetivo deste trabalho foi traduzir e adaptar uma escala mundialmente conhecida e usada, a Toronto Western Spasmodic Torticollis Rating Scale (TWSTRS) para o português. Após a tradução e retro-tradução da escala segundo as normas e critérios internacionais, realizamos o pré-teste com 30 pacientes, sendo que o completo entendimento da escala ficou prejudicado nos pacientes com escolaridade abaixo de 8 anos. Tornou-se necessária a re-adaptação da escala, com modificação de alguns elementos, tentando manter-se sua integridade conceitual e semântica. Após pré-teste adicional com 15 pacientes, verificou-se que a escala foi completamente entendida por praticamente todos os pacientes. A validação da escala está em andamento

    Characterization and Gamma-ray Shielding Performance of Calcinated and Ball-Milled Calcinated Bentonite Clay Nanoparticles

    The current investigation deals with the fabrication of two various composite-based bentonite clay minerals. The characterization and radiation shielding parameters for the two fabricated composites (calcinated and ball-milled calcinated bentonite) were studied. X-ray diffraction was utilized to illustrate the crystalline phase of the fabricated composites. Furthermore, Williamson and Hall’s method was used to determine the grain size of both the calcinated and ball-milled calcinated composites. The particle size, according to the calculation was 39.84 nm, and the strain was 0.216 for the calcinated bentonite, while the particle size of the ball-milled bentonite was 26.96 nm, and the strain was 0.219. In comparison, the transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed that the grain size of the calcinated bentonite was 566.59 nm, and it was 296.21 nm for the ball-milled calcinated bentonite. The density of the fabricated composites varied between 1.60 and 186 g/cm3 for the calcinated bentonite and between 1.83 and 2.075 g/cm3 for the ball-milled calcinated bentonite. Moreover, the radiation shielding capacity of the composites was analyzed. The results show that the gamma-ray attenuation capacity of ball-milled calcinated bentonite is high compared to ordinary calcinated bentonite.     Lineages and virulence gene content among extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli strains of food origin in Tunisia

    Nineteen extended-spectrum -lactamase (ESBL)-positive Escherichia coli strains recovered from food samples in Tunisia were characterized by multilocus sequence typing and phylogenetic typing, and the virulence gene and plasmid content were also determined. These strains presented unrelated pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns and contained genes coding for the following ESBLs (the number of strains is in parentheses): CTX-M-1 (15), CTX-M-14 (2), CTX-M-8 (1), and SHV-5 (1). Twelve different sequence types (STs) were identified among the 19 ESBL-positive strains, which included two new STs (ST2022 in 2 blaCTX-M-14-containing strains and ST1970 in 2 bla CTX-M-1-containing strains). ST155 and ST602 were detected in four and three blaCTX-M-1-containing strains, respectively, and ST405 was detected in one blaCTX-M-8-producing strain. All ESBLpositive strains were ascribed to the phylogenetic groups A and B1. Most of the bla CTX-M-1-containing strains harbored an IncI1 plasmid, except for the four blaCTX-M-1-positive strains of beef origin and ST155, which harbored an IncN plasmid. The two blaCTX-M-14-containing strains contained an IncI1 plasmid. The virulence gene fimA was detected in all strains. Most strains also carried the aer gene, and six strains carried the eae gene. All strains were negative for the virulence genes sxt, papG-III, papC, hly, cnf1, and bfp. We conclude that ESBL-producing E. coli strains of food origin in Tunisia show high diversity and that plasmids harboring ESBL genes could be implicated in the dissemination of this resistance phenotype.     Antimicrobial resistance in faecal Escherichia coli isolates from farmed red deer and wild small mammals. Detection of a multiresistant E. coli producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamase

    Eighty-nine Escherichia coli isolates recovered from faeces of red deer and small mammals, cohabiting the same area, were analyzed to determine the prevalence and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and molecular typing. Antimicrobial resistance was detected in 6.7% of isolates, with resistances to tetracycline and quinolones being the most common. An E. coli strain carrying blaCTX-M-1 as well as other antibiotic resistant genes included in an unusual class 1 integron (Intl1-dfrA16-blaPSE-1-aadA2-cmlA1-aadA1-qacH-IS440-sul3-orf1-mef(B)-IS26) was isolated from a deer. The blaCTX-M-1 gene was transferred by conjugation and transconjugants also acquired an IncN plasmid. This strain was typed as ST224, which seems to be well adapted to both clinical and environmental settings. The phylogenetic distribution of the 89 strains varied depending on the animal host. This work reveals low antimicrobial resistance levels among faecal E. coli from wild mammals, which reflects a lower selective pressure affecting these bacteria, compared to livestock. However, it is remarkable the detection of a multi-resistant ESBL-E. coli with an integron carrying clinically relevant antibiotic-resistance genes, which can contribute to the dissemination of resistance determinants among different ecosystems. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd
