    A textbook example of ram-pressure stripping in the Hydra A/A780 cluster

    In the current epoch, one of the main mechanisms driving the growth of galaxy clusters is the continuous accretion of group-scale halos. In this process, the ram pressure applied by the hot intracluster medium on the gas content of the infalling group is responsible for stripping the gas from its dark-matter halo, which gradually leads to the virialization of the infalling gas in the potential well of the main cluster. Using deep wide-field observations of the poor cluster Hydra A/A780 with XMM-Newton and Suzaku, we report the discovery of an infalling galaxy group 1.1 Mpc south of the cluster core. The presence of a substructure is confirmed by a dynamical study of the galaxies in this region. A wake of stripped gas is trailing behind the group over a projected scale of 760 kpc. The temperature of the gas along the wake is constant at kT ~ 1.3 keV, which is about a factor of two less than the temperature of the surrounding plasma. We observe a cold front pointing westwards compared to the peak of the group, which indicates that the group is currently not moving in the direction of the main cluster, but is moving along an almost circular orbit. The overall morphology of the group bears remarkable similarities with high-resolution numerical simulations of such structures, which greatly strengthens our understanding of the ram-pressure stripping process

    We present the APE (Array Processor Experiment) project for the development of dedicated parallel computers for numerical simulations in lattice gauge theories. While APEmille is a production machine in today's physics simulations at various sites in Europe, a new machine, apeNEXT, is currently being developed to provide multi-Tflops computing performance.     Real-world efficacy and safety of nivolumab in previously-treated metastatic renal cell carcinoma, and association between immune-related adverse events and survival: the Italian expanded access program

    Background: The Italian Renal Cell Cancer Early Access Program was an expanded access program that allowed access to nivolumab, for patients (pts) with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) prior to regulatory approval. Methods: Pts with previously treated advanced or mRCC were eligible to receive nivolumab 3 mg/kg every 2 weeks. Pts included in the analysis had received ≥1 dose of nivolumab and were monitored for drug-related adverse events (drAEs) using CTCAE v.4.0. Immune-related (ir) AEs were defined as AEs displaying a certain, likely or possible correlation with immunotherapy (cutaneous, endocrine, hepatic, gastro-intestinal and pulmonary). The association between overall survival (OS) and irAEs was assessed, and associations between variables were evaluated with a logistic regression model. Results: A total of 389 pts were enrolled between July 2015 and April 2016. Overall, the objective response rate was 23.1%. At a median follow-up of 12 months, the median progression-free survival was 4.5 months (95% CI 3.7-6.2) and the 12-month overall survival rate was 63%. Any grade and grade 3-4 drAEs were reported in 124 (32%) and 27 (7%) of pts, respectively, and there were no treatment-related deaths. Any grade irAEs occurred in 76 (20%) of patients, 8% cutaneous, 4% endocrine, 2% hepatic, 5% gastro-intestinal and 1% pulmonary. Of the 22 drAEs inducing treatment discontinuation, 10 (45%) were irAEs. Pts with drAEs had a significantly longer survival than those without drAEs (median OS 22.5 versus 16.4 months, p = 0.01). Pts with irAEs versus without irAEs had a more significant survival benefit (median OS not reached versus 16.8 months, p = 0.002), confirmed at the landmark analysis at 6 weeks. The occurrence of irAEs displayed a strong association with OS in univariable (HR 0.48, p = 0.003) and multivariable (HR 0.57, p = 0.02) analysis.     Techno-Economic Analysis of ORC in Gas Compression Stations Taking Into Account Actual Operating Conditions

    Abstract Gas compressor stations represent a huge potential for exhaust heat recovery, currently under-exploited. Typical installations consist of multiple gas turbine units in mechanical drive arrangement, operated, most of the time, at part-load conditions and with limited conversion efficiency. In this context, this paper investigates the energetic-economic potential of ORC application in typical gas compression facilities, as innovative contribution with respect to literature. The ORC is designed to convert the gas turbines wasted heat into useful power. Additional power output can be used either inside the compression facility, reducing the amount of consumed natural gas and, consequently, the environmental impact, or delivered to the electrical grid. Taking into account real operation of gas turbines in a natural gas compression station, located in North America, additional generated energy and CO 2 avoided, thanks to ORC operation, are quantified. Two ORC arrangements, namely with and without intermediate heat transfer fluid, are proposed and the design performance are identified. Influence of topper cycle part load operations on bottomer section are quantified through an off-design thermodynamic evaluation. The goal of the performed analysis is to obtain a detailed scenario of the integrated system operation on yearly basis. Results, for a reference 50 MW compression station, show that the direct heat exchange configuration guarantees up to 66 GWh/year of additional electrical energy, saving up to 36*10 3 tons/year of CO 2 , while ORC investment costs can be recovered within 7 years of operation.     X-ray observations of PKS 0745-191 at the virial radius: Are we there yet?

    We wish to reassess the properties of the ICM at large radii in the galaxy cluster PKS 0745-191 in light of the recent Suzaku measurements. We analyze an archival 10.5 ksec ROSAT/PSPC observation to extract the surface-brightness profile of PKS 0745-191 and infer the deprojected density profile. We then compare the ROSAT surface-brightness profile with the Suzaku result. We perform a mass analysis combining the ROSAT density profile and the published temperature profiles from different instruments. We find that the ROSAT surface-brightness profile is statistically inconsistent (7.7 sigma) with the Suzaku result around and beyond the value of r200 estimated by Suzaku. We argue that, thanks to its large field of view and low background, ROSAT/PSPC is to the present day the most sensitive instrument to low surface-brightness X-ray emission in the 0.4-2.0 keV band. We also note that the Suzaku temperature and mass profiles are at odds with the results from at least two other satellites (XMM-Newton and Swift). The difference in surface brightness between ROSAT and Suzaku is most likely explained by the existence of additional foreground components at the low Galactic latitude of the source, which were not taken into account in the Suzaku background modeling. In light of our mass analysis, we conclude that any estimate of the fraction of the virial radius reached by X-ray measures is affected by systematic errors of the order of 25%. As a result, the properties of the ICM at the virial radius are still uncertain, and the Suzaku results should be considered with caution.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&
