    Analysing people's movement in the built environment via space syntax, objective tracking and gaze data

    In this paper we use analysis tools from Space Syntax and objective observation of the human behaviour, to understand the impact of landmarks in the walking patterns of users of spaces. Our case study was a large exterior public open space (University Campus), in which participants could walk freely and simultaneously be tracked by several sensors. We carried Space Syntax analysis for this space, and then collected Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking information and used a mobile eye-tracking device to acquire eye gaze information. The collected data allowed us to map and analyse each subject behaviour in the public space. A more specific analysis was done to four selected landmarks that, according to the Space Syntax analysis, were the ones with higher integration values. Results indicate that landmarks with such higher integration values show also a larger count of fixations and saccades of gaze interaction.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Protective effect of guarana-loaded liposomes on hemolytic activity

    Paullinia cupana var. sorbilis (Mart.) Ducke, popularly known as guarana, is one of the most promising plants in Brazilian flora and has attracted considerable interest from the scientific community owing to its numerous therapeutic activities and less side effects. Hence, using nanotechnology is a viable alternative to primarily improve the physicochemical characteristics and bioavailability of guarana. The objective of the present study was to develop, characterize, and evaluate the stability of liposomes containing guarana powder and to evaluate their antioxidant and hemolytic activity in vitro. Three different concentrations of guarana powder and two methods of liposome preparation were tested. Liposomes were developed and characterized, and their stability was analyzed by evaluating physicochemical parameters. Hemolytic activity of guarana liposomal formulation (G-Lip) was compared with that of guarana in its free form (FG) and of liposome without guarana (W-Lip). Red blood cells from rats were exposed to these different formulations dissolved in phosphate buffer solution (PBS; pH 7.4). The best stability was achieved for the formulation containing 1 mg.mL−1 guarana powder produced by the reverse phase evaporation method. FG showed dose-dependent antioxidant activity, which was maintained in G-Lip. W-Lip showed high hemolytic activity in PBS at pH 7.4 possibly because of the presence of polysorbate 80, and on addition of guarana to these structures, the hemolytic process was reversed. The same protective effect was observed for FG. It is believed that the complex structure of guarana, primarily the presence of polyphenols, exerts a powerful antioxidant action, helping to protect erythrocytes

    Development and Physicochemical Characterization of Desonide-Loaded Nanocapsule Suspensions

    Desonide is a topical corticosteroid that has been used for more than 30 years; however, its prolonged use can induce several side effects, affecting dermis and epidermis. The present work consists of development desonide-loaded nanocapsule suspensions (D-NC) using different polymers (Eudragit S100® or Eudragit L100®) and desonide-loaded lipid-core nanocapsules (D-LNC). They were formulated by interfacial deposition using the preformed polymer method and all formulations showed negative zeta potential and adequate nanotechnological characteristics (particle size 161–202 nm, polydispersity index < 0.20). Simple and sensitive methods using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were developed to quantify desonide in LNC and to study its release kinetics. The method was linear, specific, precise, and exact and therefore can be applied in quantification of D-NC and D-LNC. We evaluated in vitro methods for drug release (dissolution, Franz diffusion cells, and dialysis sac) and we use mathematical models (monoexponential, biexponential, and Korsmeyer-Peppas) to show release kinetics from this system

    Efecto insecticida y repelente del aceite de canela sobre moscas asociadas con el ganado

    Objetivo. Debido a la mayor resistencia parásita, hay una necesidad de explorar insecticidas alternativos, incluidos los productos naturales, tales como aceites esenciales. En este sentido, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar, para el primer equipo, el efecto insecticida y repelente de Cinnamomum zeylanicum (formas libres y nanoemulsión) in vitro e in vivo. Materiales y métodos. Para ello, el efecto insecticida de la forma libre se ensayó a 1.0, 5.0 y 10%, mientras que la forma nanoemulsión se ensayó a 0.5, 1.0 y 5.0% frente a las moscas domésticas adultas, Musca domestica. Para la validación de la prueba, las moscas fueron rociados con el diluyente (agua y triton 10%) y con nanoemulsión en blanco (sin aceite esencial de C. zeylanicum). También, fueron realizados pruebas in vivo usando vacas naturalmente infestadas con Haemotobia irritans. Resultados. Los resultados demostraron que el aceite de canela (10%) y la nanoemulsión (5%) fueron 100% eficaz contra M. domestica después de 90 minutos de exposición. El efecto repelente se ensayó in vivo usando 5% de aceite de canela en vacas Holstein, naturalmente infestados por Haemotobia irritans. Se contaron las moscas a las 0, 1, 2, 3, 9 y 24 h después del tratamiento el aceite de canela. Se verificó disminución significativa (p<0.05) en el número de moscas vivas de vacas canela pulverizada en todo momento. Conclusiones. En base a estos resultados, C. zeylanicum mostró un efecto insecticida (in vitro) contra las moscas domésticas y efecto repelente (in vivo) contra la mosca de los cuernos

    Toward an optimized value iteration algorithm for average cost Markov decision processes

    In this paper we propose a technique to accelerate the convergence rate of the value iteration (VI) algorithm applied to discrete average cost Markov decision processes (MDP). The convergence rate is measured with respect to the total computational effort instead of the iteration counter. Such a rate definition makes it possible to compare different classes of algorithms, which employ distinct and possibly variable updating schemes. A partial information value iteration (PIVI) algorithm is proposed that updates an increasingly accurate approximate version of the original problem with a view toward saving computations at the early stages of the algorithm, when one is typically far from the optimal solution. The PIVI overall computational effort is compared with that of the classical VI algorithm for a broad set of parameters. The results suggest that a suitable choice of parameters can lead to significant computational savings in the process of finding the optimal solution for discrete MDP under the average cost criterion.</p

    Virtual interpolation of discrete multi-objective programming solutions with probabilistic operation

    This work presents a novel framework to address the long term operation of a class of multi-objective programming problems. The proposed approach considers a stochastic operation and evaluates the long term average operating costs/profits. To illustrate the approach, a two-phase method is proposed which solves a prescribed number of K monoobjective problems to identify a set of K points in the Paretooptimal region. In the second phase, one searches for a set of non-dominated probability distributions that define the probability that the system operates at each point selected in the first phase, at any given operation period. Each probability distribution generates a vector of average long-term objectives and one solves for the Pareto-optimal set with respect to the average objectives. The proposed approach can generate virtual operating points with average objectives that need not have a feasible solution with an equal vector of objectives. A few numerical examples are presented to illustrate the proposed method

    Multi-partition time aggregation for Markov Chains

    Motivated by Markov decision processes, this paper introduces a form of embedding for Markov chains which is based on the partition of the state space into a manageable number of subsets, with the aim of enabling a decomposition algorithm for calculating long-term costs and probabilities. The decomposition enables the decision maker to derive the long term distribution by making use of evaluations in the domain of the partitions, which presents reduced cardinality with respect to the original state space and hence yields reduced computational effort.</p
