    Development and prediction of scour around offshore wind turbine monopile foundations in ebb and flow tides

Monopile foundations are commonly used to support offshore wind turbines (OWTs) in nearshore shallow waters, where the periodic ebb and flow of tides can cause severe seabed erosion around these foundations. Accurately predicting the progression of scour depth under these tidal conditions is crucial for the safety of OWTs. While a few empirical formulas for equilibrium scour depth in periodic tides have been proposed, they often overlook the backfilling effects during their derivation. Consequently, these methods fail to predict the progression of scour depth characterized by recurring scouring and backfilling processes. In this study, the scour progression under different tidal patterns, including square tides, symmetrical sinusoidal tides, and asymmetrical sinusoidal tides with various periods, is investigated using numerical methods. It is indicated by the results that deeper scour depths are produced by symmetrical tides compared to asymmetrical tides, while the highest scour depth is observed under square tides, potentially slightly exceeding that under unidirectional currents. Additionally, asymmetric scour depths at the front and back sides of the pile can result from the asymmetry of tides. Although scour progression is affected by tide periods, their impact on the equilibrium scour depth is limited. Furthermore, a new concept called normalized cumulative effective flow intensity is introduced, which plays a primary role in governing equilibrium scour depth. Based on this concept, prediction methods for both equilibrium scour depth and scour progression under sinusoidal tides, which closely resemble natural tidal patterns, are proposed. The accuracy of these methods is validated by experimental data from previous studies. These findings not only provide a method to optimize the design of monopile burial depth but also aid in the development of appropriate maintenance measures to prevent scour-induced damage to OWT foundations over their long lifespans

    English-Persian Plagiarism Detection based on a Semantic Approach

    Plagiarism which is defined as “the wrongful appropriation of other writers’ or authors’ works and ideas without citing or informing them” poses a major challenge to knowledge spread publication. Plagiarism has been placed in four categories of direct, paraphrasing (rewriting), translation, and combinatory. This paper addresses translational plagiarism which is sometimes referred to as cross-lingual plagiarism. In cross-lingual translation, writers meld a translation with their own words and ideas. Based on monolingual plagiarism detection methods, this paper ultimately intends to find a way to detect cross-lingual plagiarism. A framework called Multi-Lingual Plagiarism Detection (MLPD) has been presented for cross-lingual plagiarism analysis with ultimate objective of detection of plagiarism cases. English is the reference language and Persian materials are back translated using translation tools. The data for assessment of MLPD were obtained from English-Persian Mizan parallel corpus. Apache’s Solr was also applied to record the creep of the documents and their indexation. The accuracy mean of the proposed method revealed to be 98.82% when employing highly accurate translation tools which indicate the high accuracy of the proposed method. Also, Google translation service showed the accuracy mean to be 56.9%. These tests demonstrate that improved translation tools enhance the accuracy of the proposed method

    Effect of opium consumption on cardiovascular diseases � a cross- sectional study based on data of Rafsanjan cohort study

    Background: There are differences of opinion about the beneficial or detrimental effects of opium consumption on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). So, we aimed to study the association between opium use and CVDs. Methods: We used data obtained from the Rafsanjan Cohort Study (RCS), as a part of the prospective epidemiological research studies in IrAN (PERSIAN), with detailed, validated data on opium consumption and some other exposures. A total of 10,000 adults were enrolled in the study. Logistic regression models were used to assess the possible relationships of opium consumption with the prevalence of ischemic heart diseases (IHD) and myocardial infarction (MI). Results: In this study, 9990 participants in the baseline phase of the Rafsanjan adult cohort study were included according to their completed questionnaire. Among all participants, 870 and 296 individuals were found to suffer from IHD and MI, respectively. Opium consumption was found to be relatively high in the RCS participants, especially in men (men = 2150 and women = 228). Opium use was associated with a higher odds of IHD and MI, with the adjusted odds ratios (95 CI) of 1.51 (1.22�1.86) and 1.79 (1.31�2.45), respectively. Also, dose-response increases were observed with the highest odds ratios in the 4th quartile for MI and IHD (p-values for trend < 0.001). Increased odds were observed for the two main methods of opium consumption, i.e. oral and smoking, but oral administration had higher odds ratio. Conclusions: Opium consumption is associated with the increased odds of both IHD and MI diseases. © 2021, The Author(s)

    Wireless sensor networks-based solutions for cattle health monitoring : a survey

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are nowadays becoming an active research in different fields. Precise irrigation, agriculture, earthquake, fire monitoring in forests and animal health monitoring are few applications of WSN. Animal health monitoring systems (AHMS) are usually used to monitor physiological parameters such as rumination, heart rate, and body temperature. Traditional methods to monitor animal health such as (traditional surveillance, single observation, and simple tabular and graphic techniques) are not efficient to achieve high performance in the large herds’ management systems. These methods can only provide partial information and introduce a large cost in staffing and physical hardware. Thus, it is of important need to overcome a foresaid draw-back by using alternative low cost, low power consumption sensor nodes, and providing real-time communications at a sensible hardware cost. The objectives of this paper are: reviewing existing WSN solutions for cattle health monitoring models and determining the requirements needed for building an effective WSN model suitable for cattle health monitoring and detect animal diseases.     Concentrations of potentially toxic elements and soil environmental quality evaluation of a typical Prosecco vineyard of the Veneto region (NE Italy)

    Purpose The aim of this work was to assess the concentrations of potentially toxic elements and to evaluate the soil quality of a typical Prosecco Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin vineyard of the Veneto region, NE Italy. Materials and methods Soil samples and leaves of Taraxacum officinale and Vitis vinifera were collected during spring–summer 2014. Element determination (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, Pb, V, and Zn) were performed with ICP-OES after microwave digestion of samples. Soil quality was assessed via the biological soil quality (BSQ-ar) index. Lipid peroxidation test was performed to evaluate the vegetation oxidative stress, based on malondialdehyde (MDA) content via spectrophotometer. Results and discussion High concentrations of Al,Mg, and P were identified in soil, while high contents of Al, Cu, Fe, and Zn were found in V. vinifera leaves. The high concentrations in soil are probably due to agricultural activities, whereas those in leaves are probably due to atmospheric deposition and repeated use of foliar sprays in viticulture. The bioconcentration factor showed an effective transport of Cu, P, and Zn, from soil to leaf. The BSQ-ar values registered were similar to those obtained in preserved soils; hence, the biological class (VI) of these soils is high. The MDA content in T. officinale and V. vinifera leaves was below the reference value for T. officinale (2.9 ± 0.2 μM), suggesting that the metal content did not stress the vegetation in the investigated site. Conclusions The MDA value for V. vinifera (1.1 ± 0.7 μM) could be adopted as another control value for soil quality, which in our case is of Bgood quality.^ Moreover, our results suggest that high concentrations of elements detected in the analyzed samples do not influence negatively the quality of soil, but a better agronomic management could improve soil quality in the studied area
