    A qualitative analysis of perceptions of orthodontists in Concepción about removable orthodontic appliances

    Indexación: Scopus.Objective: To determine the utilization, attitudes and perceptions about removable orthodontic appliances (ROA) among a sample of Chilean orthodontists. Materials and methods: Data collection was performed using semi-structured interviews with 10 orthodontists from diverse professional backgrounds. The analysis was performed using the “Grounded Theory” methodology, using Atlas.ti v.6.0.15. Results: We interviewed four men and six women (31 to 75 years old), with 7 to 53 years of experience as dentists, and 1 to 10 years of experience as orthodontists. All orthodontists have experience in private practice, five in public service, and one in a military institution. One-hun-dred and thirty-three codes were grouped into seven categories identified as follows: perception of orthodontists, control over treatment, ROA characteristics, ROA indications and contraindications, patients’ attitude to ROA, selection of treatment, and ROA utilization. Conclusion: In the selection of ROA, different factors are involved, including the characteristics of the dentist, of the patient, and the social context.     This Note discusses how international common law should act as federal common law in U.S. courts. This Note also explores the constitutional challenges involved in incorporating customary international law into U.S. federal common law. Such challenges revolve around the institutions of representative democracy, federal jurisdiction, and the doctrine of separation of powers. Part I of this Note discusses federal common law and customary international law. Part II of this Note presents the negative and positive effects of incorporating customary international law into federal common law. This Note concludes that to preserve national honor among the community of nations, and to protect U.S. citizens from powerful national and international factions, the U.S. federal courts must continue their incorporation of customary international law as a part of federal common law. As in the days of Jonathan Smith, customary international law is the answer to reprehensible oppression

    Disruption of the developmental programme of Trypanosoma brucei by genetic ablation of TbZFP1, a differentiation-enriched CCCH protein

    The regulation of differentiation is particularly important in microbial eukaryotes that inhabit multiple environments. The parasite Trypanosoma brucei is an extreme example of this, requiring exquisite gene regulation during transmission from mammals to the tsetse fly vector. Unusually, trypanosomes rely almost exclusively on post-transcriptional mechanisms for regulated gene expression. Hence, RNA binding proteins are potentially of great significance in controlling stage-regulated processes. We have previously identified TbZFP1 as a trypanosome molecule transiently enriched during differentiation to tsetse midgut procyclic forms. This small protein (101 amino acids) contains the unusual CCCH zinc finger, an RNA binding motif. Here, we show that genetic ablation of TbZFP1 compromises repositioning of the mitochondrial genome, a specific event in the strictly regulated differentiation programme. Despite this, other events that occur both before and after this remain intact. Significantly, this phenotype correlates with the TbZFP1 expression profile during differentiation. This is the first genetic disruption of a developmental regulator in T. brucei. It demonstrates that programmed events in parasite development can be uncoupled at the molecular level. It also further supports the importance of CCCH proteins in key aspects of trypanosome cell function

    WINDOW: A computer program for planning astronomical observations

    A FORTRAN computer program called WINDOW was written to simplify the planning of astronomical observations of a number of objects in a limited time. The program lists the azimuths at 15 minute intervals of up to 20 objects while they are in a given range of elevation angles - the window - and gives the elevation angle of each object at its time of transit. This work was motivated by the need to use observing time efficiently on flights of NASA-Ames' Lear Jet and C-141 observatories; WINDOW permits the investigator to prepare preliminary flight plans. However, the program is suited to planning ground-based observations as well. The program and a sample flight plan are described

    Evaluation of image quality in a Cassegrain-type telescope with an oscillating secondary mirror

    A ray-trace analysis is described of aberrations and extreme rays of a Cassegrain-type telescope with a tilted secondary mirror. The work was motivated by the need to understand the factors limiting image quality and to assist in the design of secondary mirrors for three telescopes with oscillating secondary mirrors (OSM) used at Ames Research Center for high altitude infrared astronomy. The telescopes are a 31-cm-diameter Dall-Kirkham (elliptical primary, spherical secondary) flown aboard a Lear jet, a 71-cm balloon-borne Dall-Kirkham flown on the AIROscope gondola, and a 91-cm true Cassegrain (parabolic primary, hyperbolic secondary) flown aboard a C-141 jet transport. The optics for these telescopes were not designed specifically for OSM operation, but all have OSM's and all must be used with various detector configurations; therefore, a facility that evaluates the performance of a telescope for a given configuration is useful. The analytical expressions are summarized and results for the above systems are discussed. Details of the calculation and a discussion of the computer program are given in the appendices
