    A Semiclassical Approach to Level Crossing in Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

    Much use has been made of the techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) for studying bound-state problems characterized by a superpotential ϕ(x)\phi(x). Under the analytic continuation ϕ(x)→iϕ(x)\phi(x) \to i\phi(x), a pair of superpartner bound-state problems is transformed into a two-state level-crossing problem in the continuum. The description of matter-enhanced neutrino flavor oscillations involves a level-crossing problem. We treat this with the techniques of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. For the benefit of those not familiar with neutrino oscillations and their description, enough details are given to make the rest of the paper understandable. Many other level-crossing problems in physics are of exactly the same form. Particular attention is given to the fact that different semiclassical techniques yield different results. The best result is obtained with a uniform approximation that explicitly recognizes the supersymmetric nature of the system.Comment: 15 pages, Latex with lamuphys and psfig macros.     Assessing the quality of ionogram interpretation using the HF Doppler technique

    International audienceThe first joint common volume measurements by the Digisonde Portable Sounder (DPS-4) and a new Doppler type system has been run at the Pruhonice ionospheric observatory (49.99° N, 14.54° E) since January 2004. The measurement of the Doppler shift is carried out continuously on a frequency of 3.6 MHz, thus the radio wave is reflected predominantly from the ionospheric F layer. To compare digisonde measurements with the Doppler data, a phase path was calculated from both Doppler and digisonde records. Under stormy conditions and in the case where a sporadic E layer was present, a significant disagreement between both measurements has been found. The discrepancies could be related to the uncertainties of the observational inputs and to the interpretation of the digisonde data. The comparison of the phase paths shows that during geomagnetically quiet days, in the absence of the sporadic E layer, and when high quality ionograms are available and correctly scaled, the electron density N(h) profiles, calculated by the Automatic Real Time Ionogram Scaler with True height algorithm (ARTIST), can be considered reliable

    This arXived paper has two independant parts, that are improved and corrected versions of different parts of a single paper once named "On equations in relatively hyperbolic groups". The first part is entitled "Existential questions in (relatively) hyperbolic groups". We study there the existential theory of torsion free hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, in particular those with virtually abelian parabolic subgroups. We show that the satisfiability of systems of equations and inequations is decidable in these groups. In the second part, called "Finding relative hyperbolic structures", we provide a general algorithm that recognizes the class of groups that are hyperbolic relative to abelian subgroups.Comment: Two independant parts 23p + 9p, revised.     A photo-elicitation study of homeless and marginally housed Veterans’ experiences with patient-centered care

    As part of a qualitatively-driven mixed-methods study, this analysis aimed to describe Veterans Affairs (VA) Homeless Patient Aligned Care Team patients’ experiences with patient-centered care. Veterans participated in audio-recorded, semi-structured photo-elicitation interviews about their health and VA health care. Transcripts were analyzed by two coders using template analysis. In 31/36 interviews, 19/20 participants discussed patient-centered care. Veterans noted Picker’s Patient-Centered Care Principles; 1) access to care, 2) respect for patient-centered values, preference and expressed needs, 3) information, communication, and education, and 4) coordination and care integration were most commonly discussed, followed by 5) physical comfort, 6) transition and continuity, 7) emotional support and alleviation of fear/anxiety, and 8) family and friend involvement. They also identified 1) quality care and 2) being present with patient as central to patient-centered care. Improvement suggestions included the patient-provider relationship, VA services, and transportation. Photo-elicitation may be useful in understanding patient preferences, needs, and values to ensure patient-centered care delivery

    Radiation-Tolerant Custom Made Low Voltage Power Supply System for ATLAS/TileCal Detector

    This paper describes custom made Low Voltage Power Supply (LVPS) system developed for the ATLAS – TileCal detector of the LHC (The Large Hadron Collider) particle accelerator at CERN, Geneva. The system is based on the use of only COTS (Commercial of The Shelf) components, is qualified to be radiation tolerant up to 40krad, and can operate in external DC magnetic field above 0.02 Tesla. The LVPS design described in this paper has been developed and produced for the ATLAS TileCal detector during the years 2001 – 2007

    Accuracy of Semiclassical Methods for Shape Invariant Potentials

    We study the accuracy of several alternative semiclassical methods by computing analytically the energy levels for many large classes of exactly solvable shape invariant potentials. For these potentials, the ground state energies computed via the WKB method typically deviate from the exact results by about 10%, a recently suggested modification using nonintegral Maslov indices is substantially better, and the supersymmetric WKB quantization method gives exact answers for all energy levels.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, and two tables in postscrip

    Captive breeding of Margaritifera auricularia (Spengler, 1793) and its conservation importance

    Margaritifera auricularia is one of the most endangered freshwater mussels (Bivalvia, Unionida) in the world. Since 2013, the abundance of this species in the Ebro River basin (Spain) has sharply declined, driving the species to the verge of regional extinction. Therefore, any management measures that might facilitate the recovery of this species would be essential for its conservation. During 2014–2016, captive breeding of M. auricularia allowed the production of >106 juveniles, out of which 95% were released into the natural environment, and 5% were grown in the laboratory under controlled conditions. The aim of this experimental work was to establish the best culture conditions for the survival and growth of M. auricularia juveniles in the laboratory. The experiment was divided into two phases: phase I, in which juveniles recently detached from fish gills were cultured in detritus boxes until they reached a shell length of 1 mm; and phase II, in which these specimens were transferred to larger aquaria to grow up to 3–4 mm. The best experimental conditions for juvenile survival and growth corresponded to treatments in glass containers at a density of 0.2 ind. L−1, using river water, with added substrate and detritus, enriched with phytoplankton, and avoiding extra aeration. The highest survival and growth rates attained, respectively, values of c. 60% at 100 days and 2.56 mm in shell length at 30–32 weeks. This is the first study to report on the long‐term survival and growth of juvenile M. auricularia in the laboratory, providing essential information in order to implement future conservation measures addressed at reinforcing the natural populations of this highly threatened species in European water bodies.This project was funded by the Government of AragĂłn, Department of Rural Development and Sustainability and carried out by the Environmental Service Department of SARGA.
