Automated Semantic Knowledge Acquisition From Sensor Data
The gathering of real-world data is facilitated by many pervasive data sources such as sensor devices and smartphones. The abundance of the sensory data raises the need to make the data easily available and understandable for the potential users and applications. Using semantic enhancements is one approach to structure and organize the data and to make it processable and interoperable by machines. In particular, ontologies are used to represent information and their relations in machine interpretable forms. In this context, a significant amount of work has been done to create real-world data description ontologies and data description models; however, little effort has been done in creating and constructing meaningful topical ontologies from a vast amount of sensory data by automated processes. Topical ontologies represent the knowledge from a certain domain providing a basic understanding of the concepts that serve as building blocks for further processing. There is a lack of solution that construct the structure and relations of ontologies based on real-world data. To address this challenge, we introduce a knowledge acquisition method that processes real-world data to automatically create and evolve topical ontologies based on rules that are automatically extracted from external sources. We use an extended k-means clustering method and apply a statistic model to extract and link relevant concepts from the raw sensor data and represent them in the form of a topical ontology. We use a rule-based system to label the concepts and make them understandable for the human user or semantic analysis and reasoning tools and software. The evaluation of our work shows that the construction of a topological ontology from raw sensor data is achievable with only small construction errors
Proteomic analysis of heart failure hospitalization among patients with chronic kidney disease: The Heart and Soul Study.
BACKGROUND:Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at increased risk for heart failure (HF). We aimed to investigate differences in proteins associated with HF hospitalizations among patients with and without CKD in the Heart and Soul Study. METHODS AND RESULTS:We measured 1068 unique plasma proteins from baseline samples of 974 participants in The Heart and Soul Study who were followed for HF hospitalization over a median of 7 years. We sequentially applied forest regression and Cox survival analyses to select prognostic proteins. Among participants with CKD, four proteins were associated with HF at Bonferroni-level significance (p<2.5x10(-4)): Angiopoietin-2 (HR[95%CI] 1.45[1.33, 1.59]), Spondin-1 (HR[95%CI] 1.13 [1.06, 1.20]), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase type 5 (HR[95%CI] 0.65[0.53, 0.78]) and neurogenis locus notch homolog protein 1 (NOTCH1) (HR[95%CI] 0.67[0.55, 0.80]). These associations persisted at p<0.01 after adjustment for age, estimated glomerular filtration and history of HF. CKD was a significant interaction term in the associations of NOTCH1 and Spondin-1 with HF. Pathway analysis showed a trend for higher representation of the Cardiac Hypertrophy and Complement/Coagulation pathways among proteins prognostic of HF in the CKD sub-group. CONCLUSIONS:These results suggest that markers of heart failure differ between patients with and without CKD. Further research is needed to validate novel markers in cohorts of patients with CKD and adjudicated HF events
Carotid Intima-Media Thickness Progression in HIV-Infected Adults Occurs Preferentially at the Carotid Bifurcation and Is Predicted by Inflammation.
BackgroundShear stress gradients and inflammation have been causally associated with atherosclerosis development in carotid bifurcation regions. The mechanism underlying higher levels of carotid intima-media thickness observed among HIV-infected individuals remains unknown.Methods and resultsWe measured carotid intima-media thickness progression and development of plaque in the common carotid, bifurcation region, and internal carotid artery in 300 HIV-infected persons and 47 controls. The median duration of follow-up was 2.4 years. When all segments were included, the rate of intima-media thickness progression was greater in HIV-infected subjects compared with controls after adjustment for traditional risk factors (0.055 vs. 0.024 mm/year, P=0.016). Rate of progression was also greater in the bifurcation region (0.067 vs. 0.025 mm/year, P=0.042) whereas differences were smaller in the common and internal regions. HIV-infected individuals had a greater incidence of plaque compared with controls in the internal (23% vs. 6.4%, P=0.0037) and bifurcation regions (34% vs. 17%, P=0.014). Among HIV-infected individuals, the rate of progression in the bifurcation region was more rapid compared with the common carotid, internal, or mean intima-media thickness; in contrast, progression rates among controls were similar at all sites. Baseline hsCRP was elevated in HIV-infected persons and was a predictor of progression in the bifurcation region.ConclusionsAtherosclerosis progresses preferentially in the carotid bifurcation region in HIV-infected individuals. hsCRP, a marker of inflammation, is elevated in HIV and is associated with progression in the bifurcation region. These data are consistent with a model in which the interplay between hemodynamic shear stresses and HIV-associated inflammation contribute to accelerated atherosclerosis. Boeing 18-Inch Fan Rig Broadband Noise Test
The purposes of the subject test were to identify and quantify the mechanisms by which fan broadband noise is produced, and to assess the validity of such theoretical models of those mechanisms as may be available. The test was conducted with the Boeing 18-inch fan rig in the Boeing Low-Speed Aeroacoustic Facility (LSAF). The rig was designed to be particularly clean and geometrically simple to facilitate theoretical modeling and to minimize sources of interfering noise. The inlet is cylindrical and is equipped with a boundary layer suction system. The fan is typical of modern high-by-pass ratio designs but is capable of operating with or without fan exit guide vanes (stators), and there is only a single flow stream. Fan loading and tip clearance are adjustable. Instrumentation included measurements of fan performance, the unsteady flow field incident on the fan and stators, and far-field and in-duct acoustic fields. The acoustic results were manipulated to estimate the noise generated by different sources. Significant fan broadband noise was found to come from the rotor self-noise as measured with clean inflow and no boundary layer. The rotor tip clearance affected rotor self-noise somewhat. The interaction of the rotor with inlet boundary layer turbulence is also a significant source, and is strongly affected by rotor tip clearance. High level noise can be generated by a high-order nonuniform rotating at a fraction of the fan speed, at least when tip clearance and loading are both large. Stator-generated noise is the loudest of the significant sources, by a small margin, at least on this rig. Stator noise is significantly affected by propagation through the fan
Context-aware management for sensor networks
The wide field of wireless sensor networks requires that hun- dreds or even thousands of sensor nodes have to be main- tained and configured. With the upcoming initatives such as Smart Home and Internet of Things, we need new mecha- nism to discover and manage this amount of sensors. In this paper, we describe a middleware architecture that uses con- text information of sensors to supply a plug-and-play gate- way and resource management framework for heterogeneous sensor networks. Our main goals are to minimise the effort for network engineers to configure and maintain the network and supply a unified interface to access the underlying het- erogeneous network. Based on the context information such as battery status, routing information, location and radio signal strength the gateway will configure and maintain the sensor network. The sensors are associated to nearby base stations using an approach that is adapted from the 802.11 WLAN association and negotiation mechanism to provide registration and connectivity services for the underlying sen- sor devices. This abstracted connection layer can be used to integrate the underlying sensor networks into high-level ser- vices and applications such as IP-based networks and Web services
New Results on e+e- Line Emission in U+Ta Collisions
We present new results obtained from a series of follow-up e+e- coincidence
measurements in heavy-ion collisions, utilizing an improved experimental set-up
at the double-Orange beta-spectrometer of GSI. The collision system U+Ta was
reinvestigated in three independent runs at beam energies in the range
(6.0-6.4)xA MeV and different target thicknesses, with the objective to
reproduce a narrow sum-energy e+e- line at ~635 keV observed previously in this
collision system. At improved statistical accuracy, the line could not be found
in these new data. For the ''fission'' scenario, an upper limit (1 sigma) on
its production probability per collision of 1.3x10^{-8} can be set which has to
be compared to the previously reported value of [4.9 +- 0.8 (stat.) +- 1.0
(syst)]x10^{-7}. In the light of the new results, a reanalysis of the old data
shows that the continuous part of the spectrum at the line position is
significantly higher than previously assumed, thus reducing the production
probability of the line by a factor of two and its statistical significance to

Molecular and clinical correlates in iron overload associated with mutations in ferroportin
Mutations in ferroportin (Fpn) result in iron overload. We correlate the behavior of three Fpn mutants in vitro with patients' phenotypes. Patients with Fpn mutations A77D or N174I showed macrophage iron loading. In cultured cells, FpnA77D did not reach the cell surface and cells did not export iron. Fpn mutant N1741 showed plasma membrane and intracellular localization, and did not transport iron. Fpn mutation G80S was targeted to the cell surface and was transport competent, however patients showed macrophage iron. We suggest that FpnG80S represents a class of Fpn mutants whose behavior in vitro does not explain the patients' phenotype
