Soft power and exchange rate volatility
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Wiley via the DOI in this recordStandard models—based exclusively on macro-financial variables—have made little progress in explaining the behaviour of exchange rates. In this paper, we introduce a neglected set of ‘soft power’ factors capturing a country's demographic, institutional, political, and social underpinnings to shed some light on the ‘missing’ determinants of exchange rate volatility over time and across countries. Based on a balanced panel dataset comprising 115 countries during the period 1996–2015, the empirical results are generally robust across different estimation methodologies and show a high degree of persistence in exchange rate volatility. After controlling for standard macroeconomic factors, we find that the ‘soft power’ variables—such as an index of voice and accountability, life expectancy, educational attainments, fragility of the banking sector, financial openness, and the share of agriculture relative to services—have a statistically significant influence on the level of exchange rate volatility across countries. In other words, countries with greater ‘soft power’ (i.e. better institutional quality) tend to experience a lower degree of exchange rate volatility
Combined chemotherapy in 76 children with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma excluding Burkitt's lymphoma.
From January 1983 to December 1986 seventy-six previously untreated children with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) were treated by combination chemotherapy. Burkitt's lymphoma patients were ineligible. The treatment regimens include intermittent chemotherapy and for non-localized patients, prophylactic central nervous system chemotherapy. Intrathoracic non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients also had cranial prophylactic radiotherapy. Sixty-six patients (86.8%) achieved complete remission. Two year failure-free survival rate was 82.1% for localized (stage I and II) NHL and 53.3% for non-localized (stage III and IV) NHL patients. Failure-free survival did not differ significantly for the two major histologic diagnoses, but two year survival rate was lower in diffuse poorly differentiated lymphoblastic than undifferentiated non-Burkitt's lymphoma (50% versus 66.8% respectively). Failure-free survival rate was 53.7% in mediastinal disease and, 73.2% in abdominal disease at 24 months. Relapse rate was higher in mediastinal cases (46.1%) than primary abdominal cases (24.3%) at 24 months. Eleven (13.5%) died of treatment related sepsis. Although the overall survival rate was 72.4% at 2 years we need novel or more intensive programmes for mediastinal and non-localized disease
Sedation and Analgesia in Intensive Care: A Comparison of Fentanyl and Remifentanil
Optimal sedation and analgesia are of key importance in intensive care. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of sedoanalgesia and outcome parameters in regimens containing midazolam and either fentanyl or remifentanil.
A prospective, randomized, open-label, controlled trial was carried out in the ICU unit of a large teaching hospital in Istanbul over a 9-month period. Thirty-four patients were randomly allocated to receive either a remifentanil-midazolam regimen (R group, n = 17) or a fentanyl-midazolam regimen (F group, n = 17).
A strong correlation between Riker Sedation-Agitation Scale (SAS) and Ramsey Scale (RS) measurements was observed. Comparatively, remifentanil provided significantly more potent and rapid analgesia based on Behavioral-Physiological Scale (BPS) measurements and a statistically nonsignificantly shorter time to discharge. On the other hand, remifentanil also caused a significantly sharper fall in heart rate within the first six hours of treatment
Compressive strength of tungsten mine waste- and metakaolinbased geopolymers
Neuro-fuzzy approach has been successfully applied to a wide range of civil engineering problems so far. However, this is limited for
geopolymeric specimens. In the present study, compressive strength of different types of geopolymers has been modeled by adaptive neuro-fuzzy
interfacial systems (ANFIS). The model was constructed by 395 experimental data collected from the literature and divided into 80% and 20% for
training and testing phases, respectively. Curing time, Ca(OH)2 content, NaOH concentration, mold type, aluminosilicate source and H2O/Na2O
molar ratio were independent input parameters in the proposed model. Absolute fraction of variance, absolute percentage error and root mean
square error of 0.94, 11.52 and 14.48, respectively in training phase and 0.92, 15.89 and 23.69, respectively in testing phase of the model were
achieved showing the relatively high accuracy of the proposed ANFIS model. By the obtained results, a comparative study was performed to
show the interaction of some selected factors on the compressive strength of the considered geopolymers. The discussions findings were in
accordance to the experimental studies and those results presented in the literature
Effect of Aging Treatment on Surface Roughness, Mechanical Properties, and Fracture Behavior of 6xxx and 7xxx Aluminum Alloys
The effect of aging treatment on the surface
roughness and mechanical properties of AA6061
and AA7075 alloys was studied. Microhardness
and tensile tests were used to investigae the mechanical
properties. X-ray diffraction analysis
was used to investigate the surface of the specimens.
Furthermore, after tensile tests fractured
surfaces were examined with scanning electron
microscopy. An atomic force microscope was
employed for analysis of the effect of aging
treatment on surface roughness. Higher surface
roughness with an increase in the volume fraction
of the precipitate was revealed.Исследовано влияние процесса старения на шероховатость поверхности и механические

A sub-group of patients with hospital-acquired pneumonia do not require broad-spectrum gram-negative antimicrobial coverage
C.D.R. is supported by an Edinburgh Clinical Academic Track (ECAT)/Wellcome Trust PhD Training Fellowship for Clinicians award (214178/Z/18/Z).Among 200 patients developing hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) outside the intensive care unit, 61% were treated empirically without broad-spectrum Gram-negative coverage, with clinical cure in 69.7%. Lower disease severity markers (systemic inflammatory response syndrome, hypoxia, tachypnoea, neutrophilia) and the absence of diabetes mellitus and prior doxycycline treatment (but not the time to HAP onset) identified patients not requiring broad-spectrum Gram-negative coverage.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Modeling the compressive strength of geopolymeric binders by gene expression programming-GEP
GEP has been employed in this work to model the compressive strength of different types of geopolymers through six different schemes. The differences between the models were in their linking functions, number of genes, chromosomes and head sizes. The curing time, Ca(OH)2 content, the amount of superplasticizer, NaOH concentration, mold type, aluminosilicate source and H2O/Na2O molar ratio were the seven input parameters considered in the construction of the models to evaluate the compressive strength of geopolymers. A total number of 399 input-target pairs were collected from the literature, randomly divided into 299 and 100 sets and were trained and tested, respectively. The best performance model had 6 genes, 14 head size, 40 chromosomes and multiplication as linking function. This was shown by the absolute fraction of variance, the absolute percentage error and the root mean square error. These were of 0.9556, 2.4601 and 3.4716 for training phase, respectively and 0.9483, 2.8456 and 3.7959 for testing phase, respectively. However, another model with 7 genes, 12 head size, 30 chromosomes and addition as linking function showed suitable results with the absolute fraction of variance, the absolute percentage error and the root mean square of 0.9547, 2.5665 and 3.4360 for training phase, respectively and 0.9466, 2.8020 and 3.8047 for testing phase, respectively. These models showed that gene expression programming has a strong potential for predicting the compressive strength of different types of geopolymers in the considered range
Effect of harvest time on physicochemical quality parameters, oxidation stability, and volatile compounds of extra virgin olive oil
The aim of this study was to determine the changes in some physicochemical properties of olives (fruit weight, water content and oil content) and olive oils (total chlorophyll, carotenoid, pheophytin a, peroxide value and free acidity), and in the chemical properties (fatty acids, tocopherols, phenolics, oxidation stability and volatile profiles) of oils during ripening.Ripening indices (RI) of olive samples were 1.93 (unripe), 4.28 (ripe) and 5.89 (overripe). Most of the mentioned features changed with ripening. During ripening there was a sharp decrease in total chlorophyll, carotenoid and pheophytin a contents. An increase in oleic and linoleic acids and a decrease in palmitic acid were found in the fatty acid composition. Olive oils showed strong relations among oxidation stability, tocopherol content, total phenols content, and antiradical actvity of phenol extracts and these parameters decreased with maturation. Nevertheless, higher amounts of trans-2-hexenal were found in the oil from ripe olives than from unripe and overripe olives. On the other hand, the highest concentration of hexanal was found in the oil from overripe olives. In general, significant differences were observed in fruit weight, pigments, free acidity, fatty acid, tocopherol, and total phenolics contents, radical scavenger activity, oxidation stability, phenolic profile and volatile profile between the olive oils from the Gemlik cultivar at different stages of maturation
