Feasibility study of modern airships, phase 1. Volume 1: Summary and mission analysis (tasks 2 and 4)

    Get PDF
The histroy, potential mission application, and designs of lighter-than-air (LTA) vehicles are researched and evaluated. Missions are identified to which airship vehicles are potentially suited. Results of the mission analysis are combined with the findings of a parametric analysis to formulate the mission/vehicle combinations recommended for further study. Current transportation systems are surveyed and potential areas of competition are identified as well as potential missions resulting from limitations of these systems. Potential areas of military usage are included

The ability of societies to adapt to twenty-first-century sea-level rise

Against the background of potentially substantial sea-level rise, one important question is to what extent are coastal societies able to adapt? This question is often answered in the negative by referring to sinking islands and submerged megacities. Although these risks are real, the picture is incomplete because it lacks consideration of adaptation. This Perspective explores societies' abilities to adapt to twenty-first-century sea-level rise by integrating perspectives from coastal engineering, economics, finance and social sciences, and provides a comparative analysis of a set of cases that vary in terms of technological limits, economic and financial barriers to adaptation and social conflicts

Aquifer Storage and Recovery: Can an Updated Inventory Predict Future System Success?

    No full text
Aquifer storage and recovery, or ASR, is used to provide a stored water source where water supplies are unreliable or to address future demand. A 2013 inventory of ASR systems was updated in 2019 to evaluate project parameters and determine which variables are best at predicting the success of future ASR projects. With a time frame of June 2013 through October 2019, the revised inventory and analysis included data on new ASR sites and existing sites whose status had changed
