The Effect of Stevia Rebaudiana on Serum Omentin and Visfatin Level in STZ-Induced Diabetic Rats
Recently the role of adipocytokines in relationship to incidence of diabetes
has been demonstrated. One of the medicinal plants that are used in the treatment
of diabetes is stevia. This study investigates the effect of stevia on serum omentin
and visfatin levels as novel adipocytokines in diabetic induced rats to find potential
mechanisms for the anti hyperglycemic effect of stevia. Forty male wistar rats weighing
180–250 g were induced with diabetes by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin
(STZ). The animals were divided into 5 groups of 8. Rats in group 1 (non-diabetic control)
and group 2 (diabetic control) were treated with distilled water, and the rats in the
treated groups, group 3 (T250), group 4 (T500), and group 5 (T750) were treated with
stevia, gavaged every day at 9 a.m. in doses of 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg, respectively. At
the end of the study significant reductions in fasting blood sugar (FBS), the homeostasis
model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglyceride (TG), alkaline phosphatase
(ALP), and Omentin level were found in groups 3 and 4 in comparison with
group 2. Pancreatic histopathology slides demonstrated that stevia extract did not induce
any increase in the number of β-cells. The conclusion is that prescription of stevia
in the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg/d decreases the omentin level indirectly via activating
insulin sensitivity and lowering blood glucose in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Paradox in Wave-Particle Duality
We report on the simultaneous determination of complementary wave and particle aspects of light in a double-slit type "welcher-weg" experiment beyond the limitations set by Bohr's Principle of Complementarity. Applying classical logic, we verify the presence of sharp interference in the single photon regime, while reliably maintaining the information about the particular pinhole through which each individual photon had passed. This experiment poses interesting questions on the validity of Complementarity in cases where measurements techniques that avoid Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and quantum entanglement are employed. We further argue that the application of classical concepts of waves and particles as embodied in Complementarity leads to a logical inconsistency in the interpretation of this experiment
Fermi-surface transformation across the pseudogap critical point of the cuprate superconductor LaNdSrCuO
The electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient R of the
tetragonal single-layer cuprate Nd-LSCO were measured in magnetic fields up to
T, large enough to access the normal state at , for closely
spaced dopings across the pseudogap critical point at .
Below , both coefficients exhibit an upturn at low temperature, which
gets more pronounced with decreasing . Taken together, these upturns show
that the normal-state carrier density at drops upon entering the
pseudogap phase. Quantitatively, it goes from at to at . By contrast, the mobility does not change appreciably, as
revealed by the magneto-resistance. The transition has a width in doping and
some internal structure, whereby R responds more slowly than to the
opening of the pseudogap. We attribute this difference to a Fermi surface that
supports both hole-like and electron-like carriers in the interval , with compensating contributions to R. Our data are in excellent
agreement with recent high-field data on YBCO and LSCO. The quantitative
consistency across three different cuprates shows that a drop in carrier
density from to is a universal signature of the pseudogap
transition at . We discuss the implication of these findings for the
nature of the pseudogap phase.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure
Inclined Hole under Different Loading Conditions: A Review of Recent Results
Three-dimensional (3D) elastic stress distributions in the vicinity of the sharp corners of an inclined diamond hole in a plate are investigated. A detailed 3D finite element model under different loading conditions is analyzed to study the intensity of different fracture modes due to the thickness effect. The stress results are compared with those provided by a recent theory which reduces the 3D governing equations of elasticity to a differential equation system, which includes a biharmonic equation and a harmonic equation. They provide the solution of the corresponding in-plane and out-of-plane notch problem, respectively, and have to be concurrently satisfied. Comparing numerical results and theoretical stress distributions, a good agreement is found.
Effects of Selenium Supplementation on Gene Expression Levels of Inflammatory Cytokines and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Patients with Gestational Diabetes
Selenium is known to exert multiple beneficial effects including anti-inflammatory actions. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of selenium supplementation on gene expression levels of inflammatory cytokines and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in women with gestational diabetes (GDM). This randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was carried out among 40 subjects diagnosed with GDM aged 18–40 years old. Subjects were randomly allocated into two groups to receive either 200 μg/day selenium supplements (n = 20) or placebo (n = 20) for 6 weeks. Gene expression of inflammatory cytokines and VEGF were assessed in lymphocytes of GDM women with RT-PCR method. Results of RT-PCR indicated that after the 6-week intervention, compared with the placebo, selenium supplementation downregulated gene expression of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) (P = 0.02) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) (P = 0.01), and upregulated gene expression of VEGF (P = 0.03) in lymphocytes of patients with GDM. There was no statistically significant change following supplementation with selenium on gene expression of interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-8 in lymphocytes of subjects with GDM. Selenium supplementation for 6 weeks in women with GDM significantly decreased gene expression of TNF-α and TGF-β, and significantly increased gene expression of VEGF, but did not affect gene expression of IL-1β and IL-8

Visions in monochrome: Families, marriage and the individualisation thesis
This paper takes issue with the way in which the individualisation thesis – in which it is assumed that close relationships have become tenuous and fragile - has become so dominant in ‘new’ sociological theorising about family life. Although others have criticised this thesis, in this paper the main criticism derives from empirical research findings carried out with members of transnational families living in Britain whose values and practices do not fit easily with ideas of individualisation. It is argued that we need a much more complex and less linear notion of how families change across generations and in time
Prediction of breast cancer survival through knowledge discovery in databases
The collection of large volumes of medical data has offered an opportunity to develop prediction models for survival by the medical research community. Medical researchers who seek to discover and extract hidden patterns and relationships among large number of variables use knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) to predict the outcome of a disease. The study was conducted to develop predictive models and discover relationships between certain predictor variables and survival in the context of breast cancer. This study is Cross sectional. After data preparation, data of 22,763 female patients, mean age 59.4 years, stored in the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) breast cancer dataset were analyzed anonymously. IBM SPSS Statistics 16, Access 2003 and Excel 2003 were used in the data preparation and IBM SPSS Modeler 14.2 was used in the model design. Support Vector Machine (SVM) model outperformed other models in the prediction of breast cancer survival. Analysis showed SVM model detected ten important predictor variables contributing mostly to prediction of breast cancer survival. Among important variables, behavior of tumor as the most important variable and stage of malignancy as the least important variable were identified. In current study, applying of the knowledge discovery method in the breast cancer dataset predicted the survival condition of breast cancer patients with high confidence and identified the most important variables participating in breast cancer survival
The influences of vitamin D and omega-3 co-supplementation on clinical, metabolic and genetic parameters in women with polycystic ovary syndrome
Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the co-administration of vitamin D and omega-3fatty acid on clinical, metabolic and genetic parameters in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Methods: This randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted on 60 subjects, aged 18–40 years old with PCOS. Subjects were randomly allocated to take either 50,000 IU vitamin D every 2 weeks plus 2000 mg/day omega-3 fatty acid from fish oil (n=30) or placebo (n=30) for 12 weeks. Gene expression
analysis of inflammatory cytokines was conducted on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of PCOS women using RT-PCR method.
Results: Vitamin D and omega -3 fatty acid co-supplementation significantly decreased serum total testosterone
levels (−0.2 ± 0.5 vs.+0.1 ± 0.4 ng/mL, P=0.02) compared with the placebo. In addition, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid co-supplementation resulted in a significant improvement in beck depression inventory
(−1.4 ± 1.6 vs. −0.5 ± 0.6, P=0.01), general health questionnaire scores (−4.5 ± 4.3 vs. −1.9 ± 2.3,
P=0.005) and depression anxiety and stress scale scores (−5.0 ± 5.1 vs. −2.3 ± 3.5, P=0.01) compared with the placebo. Additionally, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid co-administration significantly decreased serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (−1.2 ± 1.9 vs.+0.1 ± 0.7 mg/L, P=0.001) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (−0.4 ± 0.4 vs.+0.2 ± 0.6 μmol/L, P<0.001), and significantly increased
plasma total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels (+ 114.6 ± 122.2 vs. -2.4 ± 168.2 mmol/L, P=0.003) compared with the placebo. Results of RT-PCR demonstrated that vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid co-supplementation significantly downregulated gene expression of interleukin-1 (IL-1) (P=0.03), and upregulated
vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) (P=0.004) in PBMCs of subjects with PCOS, when compared with placebo.
Conclusions: Overall, the co-administration of vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acid for 12 weeks had beneficial effects on mental health parameters, serum total testosterone, hs-CRP, plasma TAC and MDA levels, and gene expression of IL-1 and VEGF among women with PCOS
