    A study of optimization for Steffensen-type methods with frozen divided differences

    A local convergence analysis for a generalization of a family of Ste ensen-type iterative methods with three frozen steps is presented for solving nonlinear equations. From the use of three classical divided di erence operators, we study four families of iterative methods with optimal local order of convergence. Then, new variants of the family of iterative methods is constructed, where a study of the computational e ciency is carried out. Moreover, the semilocal convergence for these families is also studied. Finally, an application of nonlinear integral equations of mixed Hammerstein type is presented, where multiple precision and a stopping criterion are implemented without using any known root. In addition, a study, where we compare orders, e ciencies and elapsed times of the methods suggested, supports the theoretical results obtained.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Attitude control research with educational nanosatellites

    This paper introduces the three-axis attitude control of the ESAT platform. ESAT is a modular nanosatellite that implements the popular 10x10x10 cm CubeSat standard, designed for hands-on learning at different educational levels as well as professional training. ESAT features the full set of characteristic spacecraft subsystems (power, on-board data handling, attitude control, communications, and payload). The satellite can be disassembled to focus on each subsystem, one at a time, or used all together, and features a flexible ground segment. Courses using the ESAT platform are imparted in our university, as part of the last year of the master’s degree in Aerospace engineering, and in other institutions like the ESA Academy. They cover aspects ranging from subsystems design to testing and spacecraft operations. In addition, the platform is used in master’s thesis and research activities. Although the version that is currently being used in the courses allows only one-axis attitude control, the ESAT is in continuous development and two prototypes of the satellite have already been developed that allow three-axis control based on reaction wheels and/or magnetorquers, which is essential for the testing and verification of attitude determination and control algorithms. For this purpose, the ground support equipment has also been updated to be able to carry out the turns in three axes, with the development of new testbeds and a complete magnetic field simulator.     Evaluating and comparing geochemical sampling protocols in dinosaur eggshells: refining Cretaceous ecosystem research

    The geochemical signatures of dinosaur eggshells represent well-established proxies in paleoenvironmental and paleobiological research. The variable sampling procedures reported in the literature, however, deserve attention. In order to evaluate the impact of different sampling methodologies on carbon and oxygen isotope and elemental concentrations, grinding was contrasted with drilling to extract powder samples from eggshell fragments collected at several locations. Eggshell data were further contrasted with surface materials, encasing matrix and compared with independent proxies using petrographic and elemental techniques. Iron and manganese elemental concentrations revealed an enrichment sequence depending on the sampling strategy for the same eggshell fragment. This pattern can be mistaken for a variable state of preservation. In contrast, carbon and oxygen isotope values exhibited only subtle differences and lacked clear trends. This suggests that isotope data are less susceptible to different methodological approaches. It is shown that drilling offers a wider range of possibilities compared to grinding (e.g., faster and less destructive). Additionally, drilled powder samples can confidently be used for elemental and isotope analysis, excluding contamination, thus providing a more accurate set of proxy data from eggshell archives
