Efficiency of inactivation of trypsin inhibitory activity in some selected tropical plant seeds by autoclaving

    Get PDF
Trypsin inhibitor (TI) levels in the crop seeds varied between 0.0 in Adansonia digitata and 40.8 TIU/mg in Pterocarpus osun. Efficiency of inactivation of TI by autoclaving ranged from 58.1% in Millettia thonningii to 100% in Sesbania pachycarpa and Lonchocarpus. sericeus. It isconcluded that the effect of heat treatment on TI varies with plant species and could be dependent on the structural formula of each TI

This study investigated the effect of combined actions of torsional moments, bending moments and shear forces in reinforced concrete beams with concrete compressive strength of 30N/mm2.The ultimate torsional moments, bending moments, and shear forces of the beams were determined experimentally, through a simple test arrangement set-up on fifteen beam specimens grouped from BC1 to BC5, three beam specimens in each group. The combined loads were induced by loading the test beams at an eccentricity of  from the beam’s principal axis at the mid-span, using Computerized Universal Testing Machine TUE-C-100. BS 8110, Euro code 2 and ACI 318 were used to calculate the ultimate torsional moments provided by both longitudinal and transverse reinforcements, bending moments and shear forces induced. The values obtained from the codes were compared with those of experimental results for validation. It was observed that Eurocode 2 predicted the highest bending moment of 21.1530kNm, the highest torsional moments of 9.8470kNm and 12.6193kNm, for torsional resistance provided by longitudinal and transverse reinforcements respectively, at an angle crack of 45°, while BS 8110 predicted the least values. ACI 318 predicted the highest value of internal shear forces that the beams possessed before yielding to the applied loads. http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/njt.v36i3.

This project work identifies the incessant building failure which has been reported, resulting in the loss of lives and properties in Anambra State Nigeria. A study of some selected collapsed buildings in Onitsha, Anambra state, Nigeria is carried out in this work. The methodology includes conduct of site investigations, and site inspections, destructive testing and non-destructive testing of collapsed structural element to establish their strength by the determination of the yield strength of the reinforcements and sieve analysis of the soil at the site, the use of Schmidt hammer instrument in determining the strength of the concrete. From the results of the test carried out in the case study 1, the column strength ranges from13N/mm2 to 22N/mm2, beam ranges from 13N/mm2 to 21N/mm2 and slab strength ranges from 15.67N/mm2 to 21N/mm2. In the case 2 collapsed building the column strength ranges from 14N/mm2 to 23N/mm2, the beam strength ranges from 15.53N/mm2 to 21N/mm2 and slab from10N/mm2 to 21N/mm2.the reinforcing bars has a strength hardness value of 21.19HRC for EC, 20.22HRC for IC and 19.63HRC for SC. These values are compared with BS4449 and Nst-65-Mn standards and 24N/mm2 concrete strength at maturity in accordance to BS8110. The findings show that improper mix of concrete, the use of substandard materials and poor supervision of work, contributed to the collapse of the building.

Effect of virgin coconut oil, lauric acid and myristic acid on serum and prostatic markers of benign prostatic hyperplasia

Purpose: To investigate the effect of virgin coconut oil, lauric acid and myristic acid on serum and prostatic androgens in testosterone-induced prostatic hyperplasia. Methods: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was induced in the animals by repeated subcutaneous injection of testosterone propionate (5 mg/kg) at the inguinal region once a day for 28 days. Thereafter, BPH was treated for 56 days by oral administration of virgin coconut oil, lauric acid and myristic acid. Following the treatment period, the rats were sacrificed and blood samples were collected through cardiac puncture for biochemical analysis. Results: Virgin coconut oil, lauric acid and myristic acid led to a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in serum prostatic acid phosphatase (PAcP), prostate specific antigen (PSA) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels, and also in prostatic DHT level. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that virgin coconut oil, lauric acid and myristic acid may be useful in the management of BPH because they exerted some anti-proliferative effects in the development and progression of BPH. Therefore, coconut may be a potential functional food for the management of BPH patients because it is rich in both lauric and myristic acid. However, further investigations, including clinical trials are required to buttress this
