    Gender-based violence against women with visual and physical disabilities

    Violencia de género en mujeres con discapacidad física y visual. Antecedentes: investigaciones realizadas en distintos países señalan que las mujeres con discapacidad constituyen un grupo de mayor vulnerabilidad para sufrir violencia de género que las mujeres sin discapacidad. Método:un total de 96 mujeres adultas, 45 de ellas con discapacidad visual y 51 con discapacidad física, fueron entrevistadas para conocer la prevalencia de la violencia en este colectivo y su posible relación con factores socioeconómicos, sociodemográficos y relacionados con la discapacidad. Asimismo se analizaron las consecuencias que la violencia provoca en la salud y bienestar psicológico de las mujeres. Resultados: los resultados mostraron una mayor prevalencia de la violencia en esta muestra que el conocido para la población general de mujeres en España. Igualmente, aquellas que habían sido víctimas de violencia mostraron una peor situación económica, mayores niveles de dependencia física y mayores cargas familiares que las que no lo habían sido. Además, la violencia se asoció con peores niveles de bienestar emocional, salud psicológica, autoestima y apoyo social percibido en las mujeres entrevistadas, más allá de los atribuibles a su propia condición de discapacidad. Conclusiones: estos resultados se discutirán a la luz de algunos modelos que relacionan discapacidad y violencia de género

    Effects of the environment on galaxies in the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies: physical satellites and large scale structure

    We aim to identify and quantify the effects of the satellite distribution around a sample of galaxies in the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies (CIG), as well as the effects of the Large Scale Structure (LSS) using the SDSS-DR9. To recover the physically bound galaxies we focus on the satellites which are within the escape speed of each CIG galaxy. We also propose a more conservative method using the stacked Gaussian distribution of the velocity difference of the neighbours. The tidal strengths affecting the primary galaxy are estimated to quantify the effects of the local and LSS environments. We also define the projected number density parameter at the 5th^{\rm th} nearest neighbour to characterise the LSS around the CIG galaxies. Out of the 386 CIG galaxies considered in this study, at least 340 (88\% of the sample) have no physically linked satellite. Out of the 386 CIG galaxies, 327 (85\% of the sample) have no physical companion within a projected distance of 0.3 Mpc. The CIG galaxies are distributed following the LSS of the local Universe, although presenting a large heterogeneity in their degree of connection with it. A clear segregation appears between early-type CIG galaxies with companions and isolated late-type CIG galaxies. Isolated galaxies are in general bluer, with likely younger stellar populations and rather high star formation with respect to older, redder CIG galaxies with companions. Reciprocally, the satellites are redder and with an older stellar populations around massive early-type CIG galaxies, while they have a younger stellar content around massive late-type CIG galaxies. This suggests that the CIG is composed of a heterogeneous population of galaxies, sampling from old to more recent, dynamical systems of galaxies.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Extracción con líquidos presurizados para la obtención de fracciones antioxidantes y anti-inflamatorias a partir de la microalga Isochrysis galbana

    Trabajo presentado a las I Jornadas Científicas del CIAL celebradas el 5 de junio de 2014 en Madrid.Las microalgas son consideradas como una fuente innovadora para el desarrollo de nuevos productos alimentarios y farmacéuticos debido a su alto contenido en moléculas de alto interés biológico, como ácidos grasos, carotenoides, vitaminas, esteroles, polisacáridos y compuestos fenólicos. Este contenido en moléculas bioactivas se ha relacionado con efectos funcionales beneficiosos para la salud, como consecuencia, por ejemplo, de su efecto antioxidante y anti-inflamatorio. En los últimos años se han empleado nuevos métodos de extracción para la obtención de dichos compuestos de interés mediante tecnologías medioambientalmente limpias, entre las que cabe destacar la extracción con líquidos presurizados (PLE). En este trabajo se ha llevado a cabo la extracción de la fracción fenólica de la microalga Isochrysis galbana mediante PLE. Para obtener un extracto de alto contenido en compuestos fenólicos, se realizó un diseño experimental (3^2) estudiando el efecto de la temperatura y el porcentaje de etanol en el disolvente, factores influyentes en el proceso de extracción PLE. Las variables respuesta fueron rendimiento de extracción (%), contenido de fenoles totales y actividad antioxidante. Por último, se llevo a cabo la extracción PLE con las condiciones optimizadas marcadas por el diseño experimental para la obtención de un extracto rico en compuestos fenólicos.     Clinical Case Management for Patients with Schizophrenia with High Care Needs

    The aim of this study is to establish the effectiveness of a clinical case management (CM) programme compared to a standard treatment programme (STP) in patients with schizophrenia. Patients for the CM programme were consecutively selected among patients in the STP with schizophrenia who had poor functioning. Seventy-five patients were admitted to the CM programme and were matched to 75 patients in the STP. Patients were evaluated at baseline and at 1 year follow-up. At baseline, patients in the CM programme showed lower levels of clinical and psychosocial functioning and more care needs than patients in the STP. Both treatment programmes were effective in maintaining contact with services but the CM programme did not show advantages over the STP on outcomes. Differences between groups at baseline may be masking the effects of CM at one year follow-up. A longer follow-up may be required to evaluate the real CM practices effect

    14C dating of the last Croscat volcano eruption (Garrotxa Region, NE Iberian Peninsula)

    In this shortnote, we present the results of a geochronological study of the last eruption in the volcanic region of the Garrotxa (NE Iberian Peninsula). Four 14C analysis of organic matter contained in palaeosols located under volcanic pyroclastic fall deposits of the Croscat volcano were made. The samples gave ages between 13160 and 15710 years cal BP, and are in accord with our palynological analysis and climate reconstruction at that time. The ages that we report are the youngest obtained for volcanic activity in the Iberian Peninsula

    Ten year outcomes of participants in the REACT (Randomised Evaluation of Assertive Community Treatment in North London) study.

    BackgroundA previous randomised controlled trial that investigated Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) in the UK (the REACT Study) found no clinical advantage over usual care delivered by Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) at 18 and 36 month follow-ups. No studies have investigated long term clinical and social outcomes for patients receiving ACT.MethodWe investigated inpatient service use, social outcomes, service contact and adverse events for the 251 REACT study participants 10 years after randomisation through case note review. Data were analysed using regression models adjusted for original treatment group allocation and changes in treatment group.ResultsWe found no statistically significant differences in outcomes by original treatment group over the 10 years. Those whose care remained with ACT, or transferred to ACT or forensic services, had more inpatient days over the 10 years (coefficient 223, 95% CI 83 to 363, p =0.002) than those whose care remained with the CMHTs or were discharged to primary care. Being subject to a Community Treatment Order was associated with a greater chance of being under ACT at 10 year follow-up (OR 6.39, 95% CI 2.98 to 13.70, p <0.001).ConclusionsThe ACT teams in this study showed no clinical advantage over usual care provided by CMHTs at 10 year follow-up. We also found that the ACT teams accrued patients from the original study sample who had more complex needs than those who remained with or transferred to the CMHTs or primary care during this period. Further well conducted trials are needed to identify the most cost-effective approaches to supporting successful community living and optimum long term outcomes for this group

    Geomorphic signature of segmented relief rejuvenation in the Sierra Morena, Betic forebulge, Spain

    The foreland relief of alpine orogenic belts is often rejuvenated due to the intraplate propagation of orogenic deformation. Thus, in these long-lived areas, the localisation of relief rejuvenation may be largely controlled by the reactivation of previous mechanical discontinuities. In this regard, we explored the relationship between the relief rejuvenation pattern and the distribution, geometry, and kinematics of faults in a wide segment of the Betic foreland (Sierra Morena, southern Spain). Specifically, we focused on the forebulge, a WSW–ENE flexural relief that formed, paired to the Betic foreland basin, in response to orogenic load. For this purpose, we applied both qualitative and quantitative geomorphological tools, including geomorphic indices and knickpoint pattern modelling in χ space. We found that the pattern of relief rejuvenation responds to large-scale flexural uplift coupled with the tectonic activity of two groups of faults that often show evidence of reactivation, namely overall WSW–ENE faults contributing to both regional NNW–SSE relief segmentation and vertical extrusion of the forebulge, and NW–SE reverse faults associated with an outstanding WSW–ENE topographic segmentation in the west of the study area. In addition, our knickpoint modelling suggests that the faults related to the southernmost Sierra Morena mountain front have been particularly active in recent times, although their activity span and the relative uplift that they accommodate differ along the Sierra Morena/foreland basin limit. The knickpoint pattern also suggests a significant reorganisation of the analysed drainage basins. The strain partitioning accommodated by the structures involved in relief rejuvenation suggests the intraplate propagation of the transpressional deformation reported from the Betic external fold and thrust belt.</p

    Exposure to Neospora spp. and Besnoitia spp. in wildlife from Israel

    [EN] Neosporosis and besnoitiosis, caused by cyst-forming protozoa Neospora caninum and Besnoitia besnoiti, respectively, are parasitic infestations of livestock in Israel. These parasites cause significant economic losses in cattle due to reproductive and productive disorders. Both parasites have been detected in several wild ruminant species throughout other regions of the world, while the existence of a sylvatic life cycle in Israel remains uncertain. Thus, a wide panel of 871 sera from two wild carnivores and nine wild ruminant species were tested. All sera were first analysed by MAT for an initial screening and positive samples were confirmed a posteriori by Western blot. Additionally, a complementary IFAT was used for the detection of antibodies against N. caninum. Neospora antibodies were present in six out of the 11 species investigated, whereas Besnoitia antibodies were undetected. Golden jackal, red fox, addax, Arabian oryx, Persian fallow deer, mouflon, mountain gazelle, Nubian ibex, scimitar horned oryx and water buffalo were seropositive against N. caninum infection by IFAT and/or MAT. Moreover, the presence of Neospora spp.-specific antibodies was confirmed by Western blot in golden jackal (6/189; 3.2%), red fox (1/75; 1.3%), Persian fallow deer (13/232; 5.6%), mouflon (1/15; 16.7%), Nubian ibex (22/55; 40%) and water buffalo (12/18; 66.7%). Addax (1/49) and water buffalo (1/18) were MAT-seropositive against B. besnoiti but were seronegative by Western blot. Hence, Neospora sylvatic cycle is present in Israel and may cross over to a domestic life cycle.     A survey for gregarines (Protozoa: Apicomplexa) in arthropods in Spain

    Gregarines thrive in the digestive tract of arthropods and may be deleterious to their hosts, especially when present in high densities. The impact of parasites on these invertebrates may affect both the ecosystem equilibrium and human economic activities. However, information available on gregarines in Spain is limited. Therefore, a microscopic study on prevalence of gregarine infection in 560 insects and crustaceans was undertaken in Madrid and Tarragona. Gregarina ormierei (78% prevalence), Stylocephalus gigas (56 %), Oocephalus hispanus (13 %) and Actinocephalus permagnus (only one infected out of six beetles examined) were found in coleopteran hosts. Gregarina ovata and G. chelidurellae showed moderate frequency of infection (35 %) in dermapterans. An undescribed Gregarina sp. (76 % prevalence) was observed for the first time in freshwater decapod crustaceans. Interestingly, G. ormierei showed a noticeable phenotypic dimorphism, which justifies its redescription based on modern taxonomic criteria. Sequences of the 18S rRNA gene could be obtained only in the presence of highly prevalent gregarines. G. ormierei and Gregarina sp. were related (85 and 94 % identity by BLASTN, respectively) to G. basiconstrictonea and G. cloptoni, respectively, whereas S. gigas was closely related to both Xiphocephalus ellisi and S. giganteus (> 97 % identity). Phylogenetic trees based on ribosomal sequences unequivocally grouped these new isolates either with the Gregarinidae (G. ormierei and Gregarina sp.) or the Stylocephalidae (S. gigas)
