What explains the Variation in Estimates of Labour Supply Elasticities?
This paper performs a meta-analysis of empirical estimates of uncompensated labour supply elasticities. We find that much of the variation in elasticities can be explained by the variation in gender, participation rates, and country fixed effects. Country differences appear to be small though. There is no systematic impact of the model specification or marital status on reported elasticities. The decision to participate is more responsive than is the decision regarding hours worked. Even at the intensive margin, we find that the elasticity for women exceeds that for men. For men and women in the Netherlands, we predict an uncompensated labour supply elasticity of 0.1 (or 0.2 if an alternative specification is preferred) and 0.5, respectively. These values are robust for alternative samples and specifications of the meta regression
Fractal Weyl law for Linux Kernel Architecture
We study the properties of spectrum and eigenstates of the Google matrix of a
directed network formed by the procedure calls in the Linux Kernel. Our results
obtained for various versions of the Linux Kernel show that the spectrum is
characterized by the fractal Weyl law established recently for systems of
quantum chaotic scattering and the Perron-Frobenius operators of dynamical
maps. The fractal Weyl exponent is found to be that
corresponds to the fractal dimension of the network . The
eigenmodes of the Google matrix of Linux Kernel are localized on certain
principal nodes. We argue that the fractal Weyl law should be generic for
directed networks with the fractal dimension .Comment: RevTex 6 pages, 7 figs, linked to arXiv:1003.5455[cs.SE]. Research at

Influence of entrance-channel magicity and isospin on quasi-fission
The role of spherical quantum shells in the competition between fusion and
quasi-fission is studied for reactions forming heavy elements. Measurements of
fission fragment mass distributions for different reactions leading to similar
compound nuclei have been made near the fusion barrier. In general, more
quasi-fission is observed for reactions with non-magic nuclei. However, the
Ca+Pb reaction is an exception, showing strong evidence for
quasi-fission, though both nuclei are doubly magic. Time-dependent Hartree-Fock
calculations predict fast equilibration of in the two fragments early in
the collision. This transfer of nucleons breaks the shell effect, causing this
reaction to behave more like a non-magic one in the competition between fusion
and quasi-fission. Future measurements of fission in reactions with exotic
beams should be able to test this idea with larger asymmetries.Comment: accepted for publication in Physics Letters
Optical Properties of MFe_4P_12 filled skutterudites
Infrared reflectance spectroscopy measurements were made on four members of
the MFe_4P_12 family of filled skutterudites, with M=La, Th, Ce and U. In
progressing from M=La to U the system undergoes a metal-insulator transition.
It is shown that, although the filling atom induces such dramatic changes in
the transport properties of the system, it has only a small effect on lattice
dynamics. We discuss this property of the compounds in the context of their
possible thermoelectric applications.Comment: Manuscript in ReVTeX format, 7 figures in PostScirpt forma
Multifractal analysis of the electronic states in the Fibonacci superlattice under weak electric fields
Influence of the weak electric field on the electronic structure of the
Fibonacci superlattice is considered. The electric field produces a nonlinear
dynamics of the energy spectrum of the aperiodic superlattice. Mechanism of the
nonlinearity is explained in terms of energy levels anticrossings. The
multifractal formalism is applied to investigate the effect of weak electric
field on the statistical properties of electronic eigenfunctions. It is shown
that the applied electric field does not remove the multifractal character of
the electronic eigenfunctions, and that the singularity spectrum remains
non-parabolic, however with a modified shape. Changes of the distances between
energy levels of neighbouring eigenstates lead to the changes of the inverse
participation ratio of the corresponding eigenfunctions in the weak electric
field. It is demonstrated, that the local minima of the inverse participation
ratio in the vicinity of the anticrossings correspond to discontinuity of the
first derivative of the difference between marginal values of the singularity
strength. Analysis of the generalized dimension as a function of the electric
field shows that the electric field correlates spatial fluctuations of the
neighbouring electronic eigenfunction amplitudes in the vicinity of
anticrossings, and the nonlinear character of the scaling exponent confirms
multifractality of the corresponding electronic eigenfunctions.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
