A Reverse Hex Solver
We present Solrex,an automated solver for the game of Reverse Hex.Reverse
Hex, also known as Rex, or Misere Hex, is the variant of the game of Hex in
which the player who joins her two sides loses the game. Solrex performs a
mini-max search of the state space using Scalable Parallel Depth First Proof
Number Search, enhanced by the pruning of inferior moves and the early
detection of certain winning strategies. Solrex is implemented on the same code
base as the Hex program Solver, and can solve arbitrary positions on board
sizes up to 6x6, with the hardest position taking less than four hours on four

What Can Information Encapsulation Tell Us About Emotional Rationality?
What can features of cognitive architecture, e.g. the information encapsulation of certain emotion processing systems, tell us about emotional rationality? de Sousa proposes the following hypothesis: “the role of emotions is to supply the insufficiency of reason by imitating the encapsulation of perceptual modes” (de Sousa 1987: 195). Very roughly, emotion processing can sometimes occur in a way that is insensitive to what an agent already knows, and such processing can assist reasoning by restricting the response-options she considers. This paper aims to provide an exposition and assessment of de Sousa’s hypothesis. I argue information encapsulation is not essential to emotion-driven reasoning, as emotions can determine the relevance of response-options even without being encapsulated. However, I argue encapsulation can still play a role in assisting reasoning by restricting response-options more efficiently, and in a way that ensures which options emotions deem relevant are not overridden by what the agent knows. I end by briefly explaining why this very feature also helps explain how emotions can, on occasion, hinder reasoning

Analysis of the atmospheric distribution, sources, and sinks of oxygenated volatile organic chemicals based on measurements over the Pacific during TRACE-P
Airborne measurements of a large number of oxygenated volatile organic chemicals (OVOC) were carried out in the Pacific troposphere (0.1 - 12 km) in winter/spring of 2001 (24 February to 10 April). Specifically, these measurements included acetone (CH3COCHA3), methylethyl ketone (CH3COC2H5, MEK), methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (C2H5OH), acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), propionaldehyde C2H 5CHO), peroxyacylnitrates (PANs) (CnH 2n+1COO2NO2), and organic nitrates (CnH2n+1ONO2). Complementary measurements of formaldehyde (HCHO), methyl hydroperoxide (CH 3OOH), and selected tracers were also available. OVOC were abundant in the clean troposphere and were greatly enhanced in the outflow regions from Asia. Background mixing ratios were typically highest in the lower troposphere and declined toward the upper troposphere and the lowermost stratosphere. Their total abundance (ÎŁOVOC) was nearly twice that of nonmethane hydrocarbons (ÎŁ C2-C8 NMHC. Throughout the troposphere, the OH reactivity of OVOC is comparable to that of methane and far exceeds that of NMHC. A comparison of these data with western Pacific observations collected some 7 years earlier (February-March 1994) did not reveal significant differences. Mixing ratios of OVOC were strongly correlated with each other as well as with tracers of fossil and biomass/biofuel combustion. Analysis of the relative enhancement of selected OVOC with respect to CH 3Cl and CO in 12 plumes originating from fires and sampled in the free troposphere (3-11 km) is used to assess their primary and secondary emissions from biomass combustion. The composition of these plumes also indicates a large shift of reactive nitrogen into the PAN reservoir thereby limiting ozone formation. A three-dimensional global model that uses state of the art chemistry and source information is used to compare measured and simulated mixing ratios of selected OVOC. While there is reasonable agreement in many cases, measured aldehyde concentrations are significantly larger than predicted. At their observed levels, acetaldehyde mixing ratios are shown to be an important source of HCHO (and HOx) and PAN in the troposphere. On the basis of presently known chemistry, measured mixing ratios of aldehydes and PANs are mutually incompatible. We provide rough estimates of the global sources of several OVOC and conclude that collectively these are extremely large (150-500 Tg C yr-1) but remain poorly quantified. In vivo activity of the dual PI3Kδ and PI3Kγ inhibitor duvelisib against pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia xenografts
Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) remains one of the most common causes of cancer-related mortality in children. Phosphoinositide 3-kinases (PI3Ks) are a family of lipid kinases, and aberrations in the PI3K pathway are associated with several hematological malignancies, including ALL. Duvelisib (Copiktra) is an orally available, small molecule dual inhibitor of PI3Kδ and PI3Kγ, that is Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for the treatment of relapsed/refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia and small lymphocytic lymphoma. Here, we report the efficacy of duvelisib against a panel of pediatric ALL patient-derived xenografts (PDXs). Procedures: Thirty PDXs were selected for a single mouse trial based on PI3Kδ (PIK3CD) and PI3Kγ (PIK3CG) expression and mutational status. PDXs were grown orthotopically in NSG (NOD.Cg-PrkdcscidIL2rgtm1Wjl/SzJAusb) mice, and engraftment was evaluated by enumerating the proportion of human versus mouse CD45+ cells (%huCD45+) in the peripheral blood. Treatment commenced when the %huCD45+ reached greater than or equal to 1%, and events were predefined as %huCD45+ greater than or equal to 25% or leukemia-related morbidity. Duvelisib was administered per oral (50 mg/kg, twice daily for 28 days). Drug efficacy was assessed by event-free survival and stringent objective response measures. Results: PI3Kδ and PI3Kγ mRNA expression was significantly higher in B-lineage than T-lineage ALL PDXs (p-values <.0001). Duvelisib was well-tolerated and reduced leukemia cells in the peripheral blood in four PDXs, but with only one objective response. There was no obvious relationship between duvelisib efficacy and PI3Kδ or PI3Kγ expression or mutation status, nor was the in vivo response to duvelisib subtype dependent. Conclusions: Duvelisib demonstrated limited in vivo activity against ALL PDXs
Screening for foot problems in children: is this practice justifiable?
Podiatry screening of children is a common practice, which occurs largely without adequate data to support the need for such activity. Such programs may be either formalised, or more ad hoc in nature, depending upon the use of guidelines or existing models. Although often not used, the well-established criteria for assessing the merits of screening programs can greatly increase the understanding as to whether such practices are actually worthwhile. This review examines the purpose of community health screening in the Australian context, as occurs for tuberculosis, breast, cervical and prostate cancers, and then examines podiatry screening practices for children with reference to the criteria of the World Health Organisation (WHO). Topically, the issue of paediatric foot posture forms the focus of this review, as it presents with great frequency to a range of clinicians. Comparison is made with developmental dysplasia of the hip, in which instance the WHO criteria are well met. Considering that the burden of the condition being screened for must be demonstrable, and that early identification must be found to be beneficial, in order to justify a screening program, there is no sound support for either continuing or establishing podiatry screenings for children
Submillimeter Studies of Prestellar Cores and Protostars: Probing the Initial Conditions for Protostellar Collapse
Improving our understanding of the initial conditions and earliest stages of
protostellar collapse is crucial to gain insight into the origin of stellar
masses, multiple systems, and protoplanetary disks. Observationally, there are
two complementary approaches to this problem: (1) studying the structure and
kinematics of prestellar cores observed prior to protostar formation, and (2)
studying the structure of young (e.g. Class 0) accreting protostars observed
soon after point mass formation. We discuss recent advances made in this area
thanks to (sub)millimeter mapping observations with large single-dish
telescopes and interferometers. In particular, we argue that the beginning of
protostellar collapse is much more violent in cluster-forming clouds than in
regions of distributed star formation. Major breakthroughs are expected in this
field from future large submillimeter instruments such as Herschel and ALMA.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the conference

In vivo activity of the dual SYK/FLT3 inhibitor TAK-659 against pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia xenografts
Background: While children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) experience close to a 90% likelihood of cure, the outcome for certain high-risk pediatric ALL subtypes remains dismal. Spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) is a prominent cytosolic nonreceptor tyrosine kinase in pediatric B-lineage ALL (B-ALL). Activating mutations or overexpression of Fms-related receptor tyrosine kinase 3 (FLT3) are associated with poor outcome in hematological malignancies. TAK-659 (mivavotinib) is a dual SYK/FLT3 reversible inhibitor, which has been clinically evaluated in several other hematological malignancies. Here, we investigate the in vivo efficacy of TAK-659 against pediatric ALL patient-derived xenografts (PDXs). Methods: SYK and FLT3 mRNA expression was quantified by RNA-seq. PDX engraftment and drug responses in NSG mice were evaluated by enumerating the proportion of human CD45+ cells (%huCD45+) in the peripheral blood. TAK-659 was administered per oral at 60 mg/kg daily for 21 days. Events were defined as %huCD45+ ≥ 25%. In addition, mice were humanely killed to assess leukemia infiltration in the spleen and bone marrow (BM). Drug efficacy was assessed by event-free survival and stringent objective response measures. Results: FLT3 and SYK mRNA expression was significantly higher in B-lineage compared with T-lineage PDXs. TAK-659 was well tolerated and significantly prolonged the time to event in six out of eight PDXs tested. However, only one PDX achieved an objective response. The minimum mean %huCD45+ was significantly reduced in five out of eight PDXs in TAK-659-treated mice compared with vehicle controls. Conclusions: TAK-659 exhibited low to moderate single-agent in vivo activity against pediatric ALL PDXs representative of diverse subtypes
T helper cell subsets specific for pseudomonas aeruginosa in healthy individuals and patients with cystic fibrosis
Background: We set out to determine the magnitude of antigen-specific memory T helper cell responses to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in healthy humans and patients with cystic fibrosis.
Methods: Peripheral blood human memory CD4+ T cells were co-cultured with dendritic cells that had been infected with different strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The T helper response was determined by measuring proliferation, immunoassay of cytokine output, and immunostaining of intracellular cytokines.
Results: Healthy individuals and patients with cystic fibrosis had robust antigen-specific memory CD4+ T cell responses to Pseudomonas aeruginosa that not only contained a Th1 and Th17 component but also Th22 cells. In contrast to previous descriptions of human Th22 cells, these Pseudomonal-specific Th22 cells lacked the skin homing markers CCR4 or CCR10, although were CCR6+. Healthy individuals and patients with cystic fibrosis had similar levels of Th22 cells, but the patient group had significantly fewer Th17 cells in peripheral blood.
Conclusions: Th22 cells specific to Pseudomonas aeruginosa are induced in both healthy individuals and patients with cystic fibrosis. Along with Th17 cells, they may play an important role in the pulmonary response to this microbe in patients with cystic fibrosis and other conditions
