Discovery of the Host Cluster for the Fundamental Cepheid Calibrator Zeta Gem
New and existing CORAVEL, UBVJHKs, HST, HIP/Tycho, ARO, KPNO, and DAO
observations imply that the fundamental Cepheid calibrator Zeta Gem is a
cluster member. The following parameters were inferred for Zeta Gem from
cluster membership and are tied to new spectral classifications (DAO)
established for 26 nearby stars (e.g., HD53588/B7.5IV, HD54692/B9.5IV):
E(B-V)=0.02+-0.02, log t=7.85+-0.15, and d=355+-15 pc. The mean distance to
Zeta Gem from cluster membership and six recent estimates (e.g., IRSB) is
d=363+-9(se)+-26(sd) pc. The results presented here support the color-excess
and HST parallax derived for the Cepheid by Benedict et al. (2007). Forthcoming
precise proper motions (DASCH) and Chandra/XMM-Newton observations of the
broader field may be employed to identify cluster members, bolster the
cluster's existence, and provide stronger constraints on the Cepheid's
fundamental parameters.Comment: To appear in ApJ Letter

AAOmega spectroscopy of 29 351 stars in fields centered on ten Galactic globular clusters
Galactic globular clusters have been pivotal in our understanding of many
astrophysical phenomena. Here we publish the extracted stellar parameters from
a recent large spectroscopic survey of ten globular clusters. A brief review of
the project is also presented. Stellar parameters have been extracted from
individual stellar spectra using both a modified version of the Radial Velocity
Experiment (RAVE) pipeline and a pipeline based on the parameter estimation
method of RAVE. We publish here all parameters extracted from both pipelines.
We calibrate the metallicity and convert this to [Fe/H] for each star and,
furthermore, we compare the velocities and velocity dispersions of the Galactic
stars in each field to the Besan\c{c}on Galaxy model. We find that the model
does not correspond well with the data, indicating that the model is probably
of little use for comparisons with pencil beam survey data such as this.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables. Accepted for publication in A&A. Data

Anthropomorphizing Science: How Does It Affect the Development of Evolutionary Concepts?
Despite the ubiquitous use of anthropomorphic language to describe biological change in both educational settings and popular science, little is known about how anthropomorphic language influences childrenâs understanding of evolutionary concepts. In an experimental study, we assessed whether the language used to convey evolutionary concepts influences childrenâs (5- to 12-year-olds; N = 88) understanding of evolutionary change. Language was manipulated by using three types of narrative, each describing animalsâ biological change: (a) need-based narratives, which referenced animalsâ basic survival needs; (b) desire-based or anthropomorphic narratives, which referenced animalsâ mental states; and (c) scientifically accurate natural selection narratives. Results indicate that the language used to describe evolutionary change influenced childrenâs endorsement of and use of evolutionary concepts when interpreting that change. Narratives using anthropomorphic language were least likely to facilitate a scientifically accurate interpretation. In contrast, need-based and natural selection language had similar and positive effects, which suggests that need-based reasoning might provide a conceptual scaffold to an evolutionary explanation of biological origins. In sum, the language used to teach evolutionary change impacts conceptual understanding in children and has important pedagogical implications for science education
Phenomenology of the Top Mass in Realistic Extended Technicolor Models
Extended technicolor (ETC) theories typically require ETC gauge bosons
lighter than of order 1 TeV, to perturbatively generate the quark mass. We
point out that explicit models of mass splitting also typically contain
additional TeV scale ETC gauge bosons transforming in the {\it adjoint} of
technicolor, leading to large weak-isospin-breaking effects observable in the
parameter. Viable ETC models may thus require a lowest ETC scale of
order 10 TeV, with relatively strong and finely tuned couplings to generate
. Such models do not generate observable corrections to the
vertex.Comment: LaTex, 12 pages, including 2 EPS figures in 5 file
Same-sex sexual behaviour as a dominance display
Same-sex sexual behaviour (SSB) is widespread across taxa. One adaptive hypothesis to explain the occurrence and maintenance of SSB is that it acts to intensify or diminish aggression by providing males with a means to reinforce or resolve dominance. However, evidence for this hypothesis is very limited across taxa and the possibility that SSB acts as an extension of intrasexual competition remains contentious. We investigated the role of SSB in intensifying or diminishing aggression in the broad-horned flour beetle, Gnatocerus cornutus. We tested the hypothesis that SSB is an extension of male-male competition by observing how the occurrence of SSB and the stability of SSB courtship roles (i.e. whether males switched between mounting and being mounted) influenced levels of aggression within pairs. We found that, typically, males rapidly establish fixed SSB roles and moreover that the occurrence of SSB and the stability of SSB roles had a highly significant effect on levels of aggression observed within pairs. Pairs in which one male consistently mounted the other showed significantly lower levels of aggression than pairs in which neither male exhibited SSB or in which males continuously switched SSB roles and attempted to mount each other. Furthermore, males that were consistently on the receiving end of SSB demonstrated lower propensity to court females and had a lower mating success than active males. This pattern was analogous to that found in loser males as a result of fighting. Males that lost fights also courted less and had lower mating success than males that won fights. Our findings provide the first empirical support for the hypothesis that SSB is an extension of male-male competition. Furthermore, our results suggest that SSB may act as a display, allowing males to resolve dominance hierarchies without escalating into an injurious fight
Absolute and Relative Handgrip Strength Across Gender
The purpose of this study is to evaluate existing differences between absolute and relative handgrip strength in men and women. It was hypothesized that male subjects will exhibit higher absolute hand grip strength, lower %BF, higher FFM, and higher forearm circumference when compared to women. However, men and women will have similar hand grip strength when compared relatively to body composition.https://digitalcommons.gardner-webb.edu/exercise-science-research-proposal-posters/1076/thumbnail.jp
