Fuzzy Self-Learning Controllers for Elasticity Management in Dynamic Cloud Architectures
Cloud controllers support the operation and quality management of dynamic cloud architectures by automatically scaling the compute resources to meet performance guarantees and minimize resource costs. Existing cloud controllers often resort to scaling strategies that are codified as a set of architecture adaptation rules. However, for a cloud provider, deployed application architectures are black-boxes, making it difficult at design time to define optimal or pre-emptive adaptation rules. Thus, the burden of taking adaptation decisions often is delegated to the cloud application. We propose the dynamic learning of adaptation rules for deployed application architectures in the cloud. We introduce FQL4KE, a self-learning fuzzy controller that learns and modifies fuzzy rules at runtime. The benefit is that we do not have to rely solely on precise design-time knowledge, which may be difficult to acquire. FQL4KE empowers users to configure cloud controllers by simply adjusting weights representing priorities for architecture quality instead of defining complex rules. FQL4KE has been experimentally validated using the cloud application framework ElasticBench in Azure and OpenStack. Sweetened beverages, snacks and overweight: findings from the Young Lives cohort study in Peru
OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between consumption of snacks and sweetened beverages and risk of overweight among children. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of the Young Lives cohort study in Peru. SETTING: Twenty sentinel sites from a total of 1818 districts available in Peru. SUBJECTS: Children in the younger cohort of the Young Lives study in Peru, specifically those included in the third (2009) and the fourth (2013) rounds. RESULTS: A total of 1813 children were evaluated at baseline; 49·2 % girls and mean age 8·0 (sd 0·3) years. At baseline, 3·3 (95 % CI 2·5, 4·2) % reported daily sweetened beverage consumption, while this proportion was 3·9 (95 % CI 3·1, 4·9) % for snacks. Baseline prevalence of overweight was 22·0 (95 % CI 20·1, 23·9) %. Only 1414 children were followed for 4·0 (sd 0·1) years, with an overweight incidence of 3·6 (95 % CI 3·1, 4·1) per 100 person-years. In multivariable analysis, children who consumed sweetened beverages and snacks daily had an average weight increase of 2·29 (95 % CI 0·62, 3·96) and 2·04 (95 % CI 0·48, 3·60) kg more, respectively, than those who never consumed these products, in approximately 4 years of follow-up. Moreover, there was evidence of an association between daily consumption of sweetened beverages and risk of overweight (relative risk=2·12; 95 % CI 1·05, 4·28). CONCLUSIONS: Daily consumption of sweetened beverages and snacks was associated with increased weight gain v. never consuming these products; and in the case of sweetened beverages, with higher risk of developing overweight
What the Infrared Behaviour of QCD Vertex Functions in Landau gauge can tell us about Confinement
The infrared behaviour of Landau gauge QCD vertex functions is investigated
employing a skeleton expansion of the Dyson-Schwinger and Renormalization Group
equations. Results for the ghost-gluon, three-gluon, four-gluon and quark-gluon
vertex functions are presented. Positivity violation of the gluon propagator,
and thus gluon confinement, is demonstrated. Results of the Dyson-Schwinger
equations for a finite volume are compared to corresponding lattice data. It is
analytically demonstrated that a linear rising potential between heavy quarks
can be generated by infrared singularities in the dressed quark-gluon vertex.
The selfconsistent mechanism that generates these singularities necessarily
entails the scalar Dirac amplitudes of the full vertex and the quark
propagator. These can only be present when chiral symmetry is broken, either

Heavy Quark Fluorescence
Heavy hadrons containing heavy quarks (for example, Upsilon-mesons) feature a
scale separation between the heavy quark mass (about 4.5 GeV for the b-quark)
and the QCD scale (about 0.3 GeV}) that controls effective masses of lighter
constituents. Therefore, as in ordinary molecules, the de-excitation of the
lighter, faster degrees of freedom leaves the velocity distribution of the
heavy quarks unchanged, populating the available decay channels in
qualitatively predictable ways. Automatically an application of the
Franck-Condon principle of molecular physics explains several puzzling results
of Upsilon(5S) decays as measured by the Belle collaboration, such as the high
rate of Bs*-anti Bs* versus Bs*-anti Bs production, the strength of three-body
B-anti B + pion decays, or the dip in B momentum shown in these decays. We
argue that the data is showing the first Sturm-Liouville zero of the
Upsilon(5S) quantum mechanical squared wavefunction, and providing evidence for

Reproductive capacity of the red cusk-eel genypterus chilensis (Guichenot, 1848) in captivity
Indexación: Scopus.This work was supported by the FONDEF Project D06I 1024 “Development of technologies for the production of red cusk-eel fingerlings (Genypterus chilensis)”.Genypterus chilensis is a marine fish of high gastronomic demand, whose capture has declined in recent years due to overfishing. In the development of the farming technology, high mortalities were obtained during egg incubation. The objective of this study is to contribute to the knowledge of fecundity and eggs viability of G. chilensis in captivity. The spawns of G. chilensis were analyzed over a period of 2 years and 3 months. The total fecundity was estimated by counting the masses and eggs produced monthly throughout the period. The results confirm that G. chilensis is a partial spawner, since a female may more than two masses of eggs per day, due to a large amount of mass spawned per season (621 average). The total production of masses of the Farming Centre during the period was 2,290; of these, only 7% (166) corresponding to 15,330,517 eggs were incubated. Because of its high fecundity, G. chilensis produces numerous masses of eggs, of which only a small percentage reaches incubation, as well as it occurs in other marine fish. © 2018, Escuela de Ciencias del Mar. Causality detection and turbulence in fusion plasmas
This work explores the potential of an information-theoretical causality
detection method for unraveling the relation between fluctuating variables in
complex nonlinear systems. The method is tested on some simple though nonlinear
models, and guidelines for the choice of analysis parameters are established.
Then, measurements from magnetically confined fusion plasmas are analyzed. The
selected data bear relevance to the all-important spontaneous confinement
transitions often observed in fusion plasmas, fundamental for the design of an
economically attractive fusion reactor. It is shown how the present method is
capable of clarifying the interaction between fluctuating quantities such as
the turbulence amplitude, turbulent flux, and Zonal Flow amplitude, and
uncovers several interactions that were missed by traditional methods.Comment: 26 pages, 14 figure
Cardiac Arrest in the Pediatric Population
Apresenta-se o caso clínico de uma criança de 10 anos com paragem cardíaca em repouso que foi reanimada, com sucesso. A investigação etiológica do acidente mostrou uma Cardiomiopatia Hipertrófica (CMH). Foi colocado um Cardiodesfibrilhador Implantável (CDI) para profilaxia secundária da Morte Súbita (MS). A Morte Súbita em idade pediátrica é uma situação rara, de muito mau prognóstico (sobrevida sem sequelas inferior a 5%) e com um impacto social significativo. A Cardiomiopatia Hipertrófica é uma causa conhecida de Morte Súbita, com possibilidade de prevenção. O caso apresentado serve para levantar questões sobre a necessidade e forma de estratégias para prevenir a MS de etiologica cardíaca em idade pediátrica
Dynamically induced scalar quark confinement
We employ a functional approach to investigate the confinement problem in
quenched Landau gauge QCD. We demonstrate analytically that a linear rising
potential between massive quarks is generated by infrared singularities in the
dressed quark-gluon vertex. The selfconsistent mechanism that generates these
singularities is driven by the scalar Dirac amplitudes of the full vertex and
the quark propagator. These can only be present when chiral symmetry is broken.
We have thus uncovered a novel mechanism that directly links chiral symmetry

Actividad general en los murciélagos registrada mediante un detector de ultrasonidos en una zona de selva fragmentada de Los Tuxtlas (México)
Bat tolerance to neotropical forest fragmentation may be related to ability by bats to use available habitats in the modified environmental matrix. This paper presents data on general bat activity (for three hours starting at dusk) measured with an ultrasound detector in a fragmented landscape in the region of Los Tuxtlas, Mexico. Bat activity was measured in continuous forest, forest fragments, forest–pasture edges, forest corridors, linear strips of vegetation, citrus groves, pastures and the vegetation present in local villages. The highest bat activity rates were recorded in the villages, in forest fragments and in linear strips of vegetation. The lowest activity rates were detected in pasture habitats. Data suggest that native and man–made arboreal vegetation may be important for sustaining bat activity in fragmented landscapes.La tolerancia de los murciélagos a la fragmentación de las selvas neotropicales parece estar relacionada con su capacidad para utilizar los hábitats disponibles en la matriz ambiental modificada. En este trabajo se presentan datos sobre la actividad general de los murciélagos (durante las tres horas siguientes al atardecer) medida con un detector de ultrasonidos en una zona con fragmentos aislados de selva de la región de Los Tuxtlas (México). La actividad de los murciélagos se midió en una zona de selva continua, fragmentos aislados de selva, límites de la selva con zonas de pastos, corredores de vegetación, cercas vivas, plantaciones de cítricos, pastizales y la vegetación presente en los asentamientos humanos. Las mayores tasas de actividad se registraron en los asentamientos humanos, fragmentos de selva y cercas vivas. Las tasas más bajas de actividad se registraron en los pastizales. Los datos sugieren que las zonas con vegetación arbórea autóctona e introducida por el hombre pueden constituir un factor importante para sostener la actividad de los murciélagos en los fragmentos aislados de selva
