    Solid Waste Management in the Tourism Sector of Ghana. A Study of Selected Hotels in Ho the Regional Capital of Volta Region.

    The rapid growth of the tourism sector throughout the World and change in life style has increased waste generation in hotels, which Ghana is no exception. Management of solid waste is an efficient method to increase resource efficiency thus material and energy recovery instead of landfill disposal. Various governments in Ghana have made several attempts as how waste generated in Ghana could be managed  yet waste management and disposal has become a topic for debate in Ghana due to accumulation of waste in open areas. Moreover, there are a number of strategies, technologies, procedures employed in different parts of the World about solid waste management.  To date little or no research has been conducted in this area in the tourism sector of Ghana. Thus, the present paper attempts to investigate how solid waste generated in hotels are processed and managed using selected hotels in Ho the capital of Volta Region.  Data was collected from 150 hotel staff employed in the various sections of the hotels. Results, from the study revealed that  waste such as bones, food leftovers and vegetables peels, rubber, paper, plastic and bottles were disposed in dustbins and  later on  collected by waste management company and deposited at landfill site. Sometimes paper, plastic and rubber were incinerated. Recycling and other methods of waste disposal were not implemented. The conclusion  drawn was   lack of  proper disposal of solid waste  at  landfill areas by waste companies in Ghana and burning of waste do not only creates conducive environment for pests like flies, rats and others but also pollutes the ecosystem and  health hazards. There is the need for constant training and educating of staff of hotels on solid waste management and the use of more advance technology.     Pilates based core stability training in ambulant individuals with multiple sclerosis: protocol for a multi-centre randomised controlled trial

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>People with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) frequently experience balance and mobility impairments, including reduced trunk stability. Pilates-based core stability training, which is aimed at improving control of the body's stabilising muscles, is popular as a form of exercise with people with MS and therapists. A replicated single case series study facilitated by the Therapists in MS Group in the United Kingdom (UK) provides preliminary evidence that this approach can improve balance and mobility in ambulant people with MS; further evidence is needed to substantiate these findings to ensure that limited time, energy, finances and resources are used to best effect.</p> <p>This study builds upon the pilot work undertaken in the case series study by implementing a powered randomised controlled study, with the aims of:</p> <p>1 Establishing the effectiveness of core stability training</p> <p>2 Comparing core stability training with standardised physiotherapy exercise</p> <p>3 Exploring underlying mechanisms of change associated with this intervention</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a multi-centre, double blind, block randomised, controlled trial. Eligible participants will be recruited from 4 UK centres. Participants will be randomly allocated to one of three groups: Pilates based core stability training, standardised physiotherapy exercise or contract-relax relaxation sessions (placebo control). All will receive face to face training sessions over a 12 week period; together with a 15 minute daily home programme. All will be assessed by a blinded assessor before training, at the end of the 12 week programme and at 4 week follow-up. The primary outcome measure is the 10 metre timed walk. Secondary outcome measures are the MS walking Scale (MSWS-12), the Functional Reach (forwards and lateral), a 10 point Numerical Rating Scale to determine "Difficulty in carrying a drink when walking", and the Activities-specific Balance Confidence (ABC) Scale. In addition, ultrasound imaging of the abdominal muscles will be performed before and after intervention to assess changes in abdominal musculature at one of the four centres (Plymouth).</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>This pragmatic trial will assess the effect of these exercise programmes on ambulatory people with MS.     Variation in righting times of holothuria atra, stichopus chloronotus, and holothuria edulis in response to increased seawater temperatures on heron reef in the southern GBR

    Sea cucumbers can mitigate some impacts of climate change through digestion of benthic sands and production of calcium carbonate. The projected ecological benefits of sea cucumbers in warmer, more acidic oceans are contingent on the capacities of individuals to acclimate and populations to adapt to climatic changes. The goal of this experiment was to evaluate the degree to which warming waters would impact three abundant species of sea cucumbers on the Heron Reef in Queensland, Australia. We conducted a behavioral assay using three species of sea cucumbers, Holothuria atra, Stichopus chloronotus, and Holothuria edulis. Individuals from each species were subjected to three conditions mimicking current summer temperatures, current winter temperatures, and an elevated temperature consistent with future ocean warming by the year 2100. Sea cucumber reactions were evaluated using righting time as a proxy for their stress levels and overall tolerance of warming events. The three sea cucumber species reacted differently to water temperature changes: H. atra\u27s righting times declined with temperature, S. chloronotus had greater righting times at high and low temperature extremes, and H. edulis\u27s righting times remained relatively constant throughout. Our results suggest that each of these species might respond differently to ocean warming and while some may be able to continue to combat climate change in benthic communities, others may decline in ecological function

    Canonical Wnt signals combined with suppressed TGFβ/BMP pathways promote renewal of the native human colonic epithelium

    Background: A defining characteristic of the human intestinal epithelium is that it is the most rapidly renewing tissue in the body. However, the processes underlying tissue renewal and the mechanisms that govern their coordination have proved difficult to study in the human gut. Objective: To investigate the regulation of stem cell-driven tissue renewal by canonical Wnt and TGFβ/bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathways in the native human colonic epithelium. Design: Intact human colonic crypts were isolated from mucosal tissue samples and placed into 3D culture conditions optimised for steady-state tissue renewal. High affinity mRNA in situ hybridisation and immunohistochemistry were complemented by functional genomic and bioimaging techniques. The effects of signalling pathway modulators on the status of intestinal stem cell biology, crypt cell proliferation, migration, differentiation and shedding were determined. Results: Native human colonic crypts exhibited distinct activation profiles for canonical Wnt, TGFβ and BMP pathways. A population of intestinal LGR5/OLFM4-positive stem/progenitor cells were interspersed between goblet-like cells within the crypt-base. Exogenous and crypt cell-autonomous canonical Wnt signals supported homeostatic intestinal stem/progenitor cell proliferation and were antagonised by TGFβ or BMP pathway activation. Reduced Wnt stimulation impeded crypt cell proliferation, but crypt cell migration and shedding from the crypt surface were unaffected and resulted in diminished crypts. Conclusions: Steady-state tissue renewal in the native human colonic epithelium is dependent on canonical Wnt signals combined with suppressed TGFβ/BMP pathways. Stem/progenitor cell proliferation is uncoupled from crypt cell migration and shedding, and is required to constantly replenish the crypt cell population

    The spectrum of COVID-19-associated dermatologic manifestations: an international registry of 716 patients from 31 countries

    BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has associated cutaneous manifestations. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the diversity of cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19, and facilitate understanding of underlying pathophysiology. METHODS: Case series from an international registry from the American Academy of Dermatology and International League of Dermatological Societies. RESULTS: The registry collected 716 cases of new-onset dermatologic symptoms in patients with confirmed/suspected COVID-19. Of the 171 patients in the registry with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, the most common morphologies were morbilliform (22%), pernio-like (18%), urticarial (16%), macular erythema (13%), vesicular (11%), papulosquamous (9.9%), and retiform purpura (6.4%). Pernio-like lesions were common in patients with mild disease, while retiform purpura presented exclusively in ill, hospitalized patients. LIMITATIONS: We cannot estimate incidence or prevalence. Confirmation bias is possible. CONCLUSION: This study highlights the array of cutaneous manifestations associated with COVID-19. Many morphologies were non-specific, while others may provide insight into potential immune or inflammatory pathways in COVID-19 pathophysiology
