    Physical processes leading to surface inhomogeneities: the case of rotation

    In this lecture I discuss the bulk surface heterogeneity of rotating stars, namely gravity darkening. I especially detail the derivation of the omega-model of Espinosa Lara & Rieutord (2011), which gives the gravity darkening in early-type stars.     Radon Exhalation from Industrial Residues as Suitable Additives for Building Materials

    Radon exhalation from phosphogypsum (PG) and red mud (RM) samples are of environmental concern. The study is oriented to evaluate by different nuclear techniques, industrial materials cumulated in sites at Morón (PG) and Puerto Ordaz (RM) in Venezuela. RM samples and industrial by products are assessed for its potential use as additives in building materials regarding its radiological health risk. Radioactive matter concentration in RM is up to 11.6 kBq.kg-1. Radon concentration range for RM dry powder is between DL and 2.5 kBq.m-³ and for PG is between 105-340 Bq.m-³. Results indicate that industrial by product before it can be used as additive; require remedial actions to lower the environmental impact. Experimental values are compared with locally available cement, bricks and gypsum building materials

    Performance of the star‐shaped flyer in the study of brittle materials: Three dimensional computer simulations and experimental observations

    A three dimensional finite element computer simulation has been performed to assess the effects of release waves in normal impact soft‐recovery experiments when a star‐shaped flyer plate is used. Their effects on the monitored velocity‐time profiles have been identified and their implications in the interpretation of wave spreading and spall signal events highlighted. The calculation shows that the star‐shaped flyer plate indeed minimizes the magnitude of edge effects. The major perturbation to the one‐dimensional response within the central region of the target plate results from spherical waves emanating from the corners of the star‐shaped plate. Experimental evidence of the development of a damage ring located in coincidence with the eight entrant corners of the flyer plate is reported. Microscopy studies performed in the intact recovered samples revealed that this damage ring eliminates undesired boundary release waves within the central region of the specimen. Consequently, the observed damage in compression and tension within this region can be attributed primarily to the conditions arising from a state of uniaxial strain.

    Design of Intervention Program for Preventing of Alcohol Misuse in University Students

    In the Universidad de Oriente of Santiago de Cuba, recent diagnoses showed there is currently an increase in the rate of young people who consume alcoholic beverages. Therefore, the present research has like General Objective: To design a psychoeducational intervention program to prevent the undue consumption of alcohol in the Student Residence of the University of the East of Santiago de Cuba. Techniques such as Composition, Risk Perception Questionnaire on Alcohol Consumption, Social Skills Questionnaire and Preference Questionnaire for leisure time have used. The main results were that 94% of these young people had a low perception of risk on alcohol consumption and only 15% were able to identify the main negative consequences associated with consumption. 96% had insufficient development of social skills, which is associated with the poor ability to resist the pressure of the group

    We examine several resummation methods for computing higher order corrections to the finite temperature effective potential, in the context of a scalar ϕ4\phi^4 theory.     Analysis of the Radon-222 Concentration and Physical-chemical Quality, in Drinking Water of Taxco, Guerrero

    In this work the determination of radon gas (222Rn) and the characterization of chemical elements in drinking water of the city Taxco was carried out. Ingesting or inhaling a small number of radionuclides, as well as water of poor chemical quality, can become a potential public health problem. We are collecting 8 samples of water from a spring, physicochemical parameters were measured in field on different days of the dry season. Measurements of 222Rn were performed in the laboratory with an AlphaGUARD equipment. The chemical quality was analyzed in laboratory too by means of mayor and minor ions, by volumetry and colorimetry. The sodium was determined by Flama Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (FAAS). Trace elements were analyzed by were determined by Atomic Emission Spectroscopy with Plasma Coupled by Induction (ICP-AES). The concentrations of 222Rn present an average of 22.06 ± 2.52 BqL-1. The results obtained from the main ions and field parameters show a type of diluted sodium-calcium-bicarbonate water. The trace elements present are very small and not exceed the limit of quantification. Radon gas is produced by the igneous rock that is the top of the stratigraphic column, of the hydric recharge. Rainwater when descending through the fractures is impregnated with 222Rn gas and accumulated in the underlying rock that has sufficient porosity to accumulate water and gas in the Chacualco´s spring

    Calculable Upper Limit on the Mass of the Lightest Higgs Boson in Any Perturbatively Valid Supersymmetric Theory

    We show that there is a calculable upper limit on the mass of the lightest Higgs boson in any supersymmetric theory that remains perturbative up to a high scale . There are no restrictions on the Higgs sector, or the gauge group or particle content. We estimate the value of the upper limit to be m_{\hcirc} < 146 GeV for 100 GeV < MtM_t < 145 GeV, from all effects except possibly additional heavy fermions beyond top (which could increase the limit by 0-20 GeV if any existed); for MtM_t > 145 GeV the limit decreases monotonically. We expect to be able to decrease the value of the upper limit by at least a few percent by very careful analysis of the conditions.     The Reach of CERN LEP2 and Fermilab Tevatron Upgrades for Higgs Bosons in Supersymmetric Models

    Luminosity upgrades of the Fermilab Tevatron pbar-p collider have been shown to allow experimental detection of a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson up to mHSM120m_{H_{SM}}\sim 120 GeV via WHSMνbbˉWH_{SM} \to \ell\nu b\bar{b} events. This limit nearly saturates the parameter space for many models of weak scale supersymmetry (SUSY) with a minimal particle content. It is therefore interesting to examine the SUSY Higgs reach of future Tevatron experiments. Contours are presented of Higgs boson reach for CERN LEP2 and Tevatron luminosity upgrades for three models of weak scale SUSY: the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), the minimal Supergravity model (mSUGRA) and a simple Gauge Mediated SUSY Breaking Model (GMSB). In each case we find a substantial gain in reach at the Tevatron with integrated luminosity increasing from 10 fb^{-1} to 25-30 fb^{-1}. With the larger integrated luminosity, a Higgs search at the Tevatron should be able to probe essentially the entire parameter space of these models. While a discovery would be very exciting, a negative result would severely constrain our ideas about how weak scale supersymmetry is realized.Comment: 12 pages + 7 figures.
