Photoinduced post-modification of graphitic carbon nitride-embedded hydrogels : synthesis of 'hydrophobic hydrogels' and pore substructuring
Hydrogels are a special class of crosslinked hydrophilic polymers with a high water content through their porous structures. Post-modifications of hydrogels propose an attractive platform so that a variety of fresh functions, which are not arising from initial monomers, could be accessible on a parental network. Photoinduced post-modification of hydrogels by embedding semiconductor nanosheets would be of high interest and novelty. Here, a metal-free semiconductor graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN)-embedded hydrogel as an initial network was synthesized via redox-couple initiation under dark conditions. Post-photomodification of so-formed hydrogel, thanks to the photoactivity of the embedded g-CN nanosheets, was exemplified in two scenarios. The synthesis of ‘hydrophobic hydrogel’ is reported and its application in delayed cation delivery was investigated. Furthermore, pores of the initial hydrogel were modified by the formation of a secondary polymer network. Such a facile and straightforward synthetic protocol to manufacture functional soft materials will be of high interest in near future by the means of catalysis and agricultural delivery
Oxidative photopolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) via graphitic carbon nitride : a modular toolbox for attaining PEDOT
Conductive polymers found key applications ranging from optoelectronics and OLEDs to conductive composite materials. The synthesis of conductive polymers from monomers such as thiophene derivatives, pyrroles and aniline mainly relies on oxidative polymerization, and the processing of so-formed (insoluble) polymers is a major issue that needs to be addressed. In the present work, oxidative photopolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) by visible light employing the metal-free semiconductor graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) is presented. Two main reaction pathways based on g-CN content will be described, and the formation of processable oligo-EDOT will be demonstrated
On the photopolymerization of mevalonic lactone methacrylate : exposing the potential of an overlooked monomer
Functional polymers remain at the core of polymer science in the second century of macromolecular material research. Lactones are known as monomers for ring-opening polymerizations; however, polymers containing lactone rings as pendant groups are rare. In this study, we revive an overlooked monomer, mevalonic lactone methacrylate, by demonstrating its radical polymerization, reporting the properties of the polymer product, and providing information on the thermal, UV, and hydrolytic stabilities of both the monomer and polymer. Controlled polymerization (via RAFT) provides synthetic precision and active terminal groups; thus, the formation of a simple block copolymer based on the aforementioned polymer is presented. The pendant ring accepts nucleophilic attacks, so the initially hydrophobic polymer can be altered to make it hydrophilic via reactions with nucleophiles in just seconds. Thus, the polymer film provides responsive surface formation
Upgrading poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) beads : incorporation of organomodified metal-free semiconductor graphitic carbon nitride through suspension photopolymerization to generate photoactive resins
The inclusion of the metal free semiconductor graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) into polymer systems brings a variety of new options, for instance as a heterogeneous photoredox polymer initiator. In this context, we present here the decoration of the inner surface of poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) beads with organomodified g-CN via one pot suspension photopolymerization. The resulting beads are varied by changing reaction parameters, such as, crosslinking ratio, presence of porogens, and mechanical agitation. The photocatalytic activity of so-formed beads was tested by aqueous rhodamine B dye photodegradation experiments. Additionally, dye adsorption/desorption properties were examined in aqueous as well as in organic solvents. Photoinduced surface modification with vinylsulfonic acid and 4-vinyl pyridine is introduced. Overall, metal-free semiconductor g-CN donates photoactivity to polymer networks that can be employed for dye photodegradation and acid–base catalyst transformation through facile photoinduced surface modifications
A Small Yes for Presidentialism: The Turkish Constitutional Referendum of April 2017
Following four elections in three years, on 16 April 2017 Turkish voters once again went to the polls - this time under the emergency law established after the failed coup attempt of July 2016 - to vote on constitutional amendments aimed at replacing the existing parliamentary system with an executive presidency. This article reviews the content of the proposed constitutional amendments, analyses the campaign including the strategies employed by the main political actors in the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ camps and the resource advantages enjoyed by the ruling party, assesses the electoral performance of both sides through a summary of results from provincial areas and geographical regions, and considers how Turkish politics are likely to take shape under the new system. © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group
Automated discrimination of psychotropic drugs in mice via computer vision-based analysis
Cataloged from PDF version of article. We developed an inexpensive computer vision-based method utilizing an algorithm which differentiates
drug-induced behavioral alterations. The mice were observed in an open-field arena and their activity
was recorded for 100 min. For each animal the first 50 min of observation were regarded as the drug-free
period. Each animal was exposed to only one drug and they were injected (i.p.) with either amphetamine
or cocaine as the stimulant drugs or morphine or diazepam as the inhibitory agents. The software divided
the arena into virtual grids and calculated the number of visits (sojourn counts) to the grids and instantaneous
speeds within these grids by analyzing video data. These spatial distributions of sojourn counts and
instantaneous speeds were used to construct feature vectors which were fed to the classifier algorithms
for the final step of matching the animals and the drugs. The software decided which of the animals were
drug-treated at a rate of 96%. The algorithm achieved 92% accuracy in sorting the data according to the
increased or decreased activity and then determined which drug was delivered. The method differentiated
the type of psychostimulant or inhibitory drugs with a success ratio of 70% and 80%, respectively.
This method provides a new way to automatically evaluate and classify drug-induced behaviors in mice.

Development of electrically conductive microstructures based on polymer/CNT nanocomposites via two-photon polymerization
Femtosecond laser-induced two-photon polymerization (2PP) of carbon nanofiller doped polymers was utilized to produce electrically conductive microstructures, which are expected to be applicable as microelectronic components or micro-electromechanical systems in sensors. The nanocomposites were processed by compounding an inorganic-organic hybrid material with two different types (short and long) of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Different SWCNT contents were dispersed in the polymer by sonication to adjust the electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites. Low surface resistivity values of ~ 4.6 × 105 Ω/sq. could be measured for coated reference films with a thickness of 30 μm having an exceptionally low SWCNT content of 0.01 wt% of the long type of SWCNTs. In contrast, a higher minimum resistivity of 1.5 × 106 Ω/sq. was exhibited for composites with a higher content, 2 wt%, of short SWCNTs. The structural quality of the microstructures processed by 2PP was mainly influenced by the dispersion quality of the SWCNTs. To characterize the electrical conductivity, conductive atomic force microscopy was applied for the first time. In microstructures with 0.05 wt% of the long type of SWCNTs, a contact current could be detected over a wide range of the measured area visualizing the electrical conductive CNT network, which has not been reported before
Early growth performances of various seed sources of black (Prunus serotina Erhr.) and wild cherry (Prunus avium L.) seedlings on low and high elevation sites in the western Black Sea Region of Turkey
The growth performances of one-year old seedlings of various black cherry (BC) and wild cherry (WC) seed sources (SSs) that were planted on low elevation sites (LES) and high elevation sites (HES) in the western Black Sea Region (BSR) of Turkey were assessed one and five years after planting (YAP). Significance between and within-species variations were found for seedling growth. On species basis, WC was superior to BC for seedling groundline diameter and height growth for the low elevation sites(LES) of one and five years after planting (YAP), whereas no substantial survival and growth differences were found between the species for the high elevation sites (HES) of five YAP. Generally, seedlings averaged a greater survival on the LES, when compared with those on the HES. Local WC SSs (Tefen, Yayla and Dirgine) demonstrated an enhanced seedling survival and growth on LES than the other SSs. Unlike the LES results, a collection of BC (Michigan 1 and Ukraine) and WC SSs (Dirgine, Germany, and Tefen) displayed the best seedling growth over five years. The HES seedlings frequently experienced diebacks and forking due to heavy snow fall and wildlife browsing. Selection of the local WC SSs was vital for the LES. However, BC SSs may present a potential for planting on the HES with harsher environmental conditions. Keywords: Black cherry, provenance test, seedling growth and survival, wild cherry
Thrombotic risk assessment in antiphospholipid syndrome: do noncriteria antibodies contribute?
BACKGROUND/AIM: In this cross-sectional study, it was aimed to test the predictive value of noncriteria antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) in addition to the global antiphospholipid syndrome score (GAPSS) in predicting vascular thrombosis (VT) in a cohort of patients with APS and aPL (+) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 50 patients with primary APS, 68 with SLE/APS, and 52 with aPL (+) SLE who were classified according to VT as VT ± pregnancy morbidity (PM), PM only or aPL (+) SLE. Antiphospholipid serology consisting of lupus anticoagulant (LA), anticardiolipin (aCL) immunoglobulin G (IgG)/IgM/IgA, antibeta2 glycoprotein I (aβ2GPI) IgG/IgM/IgA, antiphosphatidylserine/prothrombin (aPS/PT) IgG/IgM and antidomain-I (aDI) IgG was determined for each patient. The GAPSS and adjusted GAPSS (aGAPSS) were calculated for each patient, as previously defined. Logistic regression analysis was carried out with thrombosis as the dependent variable and high GAPSS, aCL IgA, aβ2GPI IgA, and aDI IgG as independent variables. RESULTS: The mean GAPSS and aGAPSS of the study population were 11.6 ± 4.4 and 9.6 ± 3.8. Both the VT ± PM APS (n = 105) and PM only APS (n = 13) groups had significantly higher GAPSS and aGAPSS values compared to the aPL (+) SLE (n = 52) group. The patients with recurrent thrombosis had higher aGAPSS but not GAPSS than those with a single thrombotic event. The computed area under the receiver operating characteristic curve demonstrated that a GAPSS ≥13 and aGAPSS ≥10 had the best predictive values for thrombosis. Logistic regression analysis including a GAPSS ≥13, aCL IgA, aβ2GPI IgA, and aDI IgG showed that none of the factors other than a GAPSS ≥13 could predict thrombosis. CONCLUSION: Both the GAPSS and aGAPSS successfully predict the thrombotic risk in aPL (+) patients and aCL IgA, aβ2GPI IgA, and aDI IgG do not contribute to high a GAPSS or aGAPSS
