Tracing fish farm waste in the northern shrimp Pandalus borealis (Kroyer, 1838) using lipid biomarkers
A large amount of organic effluents are released annually from coastal fish farming locations primarily in the form of faeces that settle to the seabed, where they become a substantial food source for benthic communities. The inclusion of marine and vegetable oils as sources of lipids in salmon feed has resulted in a fatty acid (FA) composition that differs markedly from marine-derived material, and thus they can be used as an efficient tracer for the distribution of fish farm waste in both sediments and fish. To obtain a better understanding of the flux of organic fish farm waste through the benthic food web, we sampled northern shrimp Pandalus borealis at fish farming and reference locations in 4 regions along the Norwegian coast. Analyses of the FA compositions of muscular tissue demonstrated that shrimp collected within 800 m from fish farms had a higher content of the vegetable-derived FAs 18:2n6 (linoleic acid) and 18:3n3 (a-linolenic acid) and the marine FAs 20:1n9 and 22:1n11, compared with shrimp collected from reference locations. This difference in specific FA contents allowed us to separate shrimp collected at fish farming locations from those collected at reference locations. Our results demonstrate that shrimp within the distribution range of fish farms can incorporate organic fish farm waste into part of their diet, either directly through the consumption of waste feed and faeces or indirectly by feeding on influenced infauna

Regional impact from fin-fish farming in an intensive production area (Hardangerfjord, Norway)
The Hardangerfjord is one of the largest salmon-farming areas in Norway, with an annual production of approximately 70,000 metric tonnes. The regional impact of fin-fish farming in a fjord environment was studied during 2008–2010. Ecological conditions in intertidal macroalgal and benthic deep basin communities were studied in addition to measurements of nutrients and chlorophyll-a values. Macroalgal communities in the intertidal zone and the deep water fauna communities showed a high ecological status in the intermediate part of the fjord and a good status in the inner part of the fjord. Faunal communities in the outermost basin indicate that the assimilative capacity for farm waste of this deep basin could be limited. Nutrients and chlorophyll-a values were within national thresholds defined as high water quality. The good ecological conditions of the parameters studied in the fjord show little evidence of a regional impact from the fish farming industry despite the intensive production level.publishedVersio
The Hardanger Fiord - salmonid aquaculture and effects on wild salmonid populations
Wild populations of salmon and seatrout in the Hardanger Fjord show significant declines in recent years. The report also describes the hydrographical conditions and the aquaculture production of salmonids in the fjord. The official numbers of adult salmon lice predating on cage reared salmon are used to estimate the production of salmon lice during spring in this fjord.
It is assumed that salmon lice are the most acute threat to wild salmonids in the fjord, but the genetic impact of farmed escapees is also of great concern. A lowering of the action level for salmon lice treatment and initiation of a environmental survaillance programme is proposed.
AkvaVis - dynamic GIS-tool for siting of fish farms for new aquaculture species : environmental quality requirements for new aquaculture species and Atlantic salmon
AkvaVis is a dynamic GIS tool for siting fish farms, and this report describes a prototype version for mussel farms. AkvaVis combines mappable characteristics such as depth, currents and distance from other objects, and it enables objects to communicate their properties to one another in order to determine the best locations for farms. AkvaVis also calculates the carrying capacity of individual sites by means of mathematical simulation models. The prototype has been developed for the Hardangerfjord, and the report provides a survey of the topography, hydrography and currents of this fjord. With the further development of the system in mind, it also provides an overview of the environmental requirements for new farmed species, as well as for salmon
Regulatory frameworks can support the development of aquaculture
Establishing new mariculture activities is difficuIt in many European countries. This is partly
caused by lack of understanding of the actual environmental impact of the industry and lack
of appropriate regulatory frameworks.
Regulations that can overcome these obstacles must be efficient, coherent and transparent.
This will safeguard the environment and also provide stable long-term conditions for the
industry, which will also get the necessary legitimacy and credibility.
The regulations must form a coherent and unbroken chain of logical and adequate elements;
political support, EQO and EQS, management systems that can and keep the environmental
impact of the farms in accordance with the EQO.
The scientists must provide the information required to develop the regulations, but are also
responsible for binging the information to the debate forum and the decision makers
