OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare insulin sensitivity indices, fasting vs glucose stimulated, in children and adolescents with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two hundredeleven obese children with median age of 11.24 ± 2.65 years were evaluated. After initial clinical and anthropometric examination, B-mode ultrasonography (USG) was performed and all subjects underwent Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). Quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (Homa-IR), the insulinogenic index (IGI), the Matsuda index, and the oral glucose insulin sensitivity (OGIS) model were used to determine peripheral insulin sensitivity. RESULTS: 59.24% (68 boys, 57 girls) of obese children had NALFD. The prevalence of FLD in obese adolescents was significantly higher than in prepubertal children (65.8% vs. 51.5%). Fasting glucose, insulin, Homa-IR, QUICKI, and OGIS and Matsuda were significantly different between subjects with and without NALFD. Insulin and glucose indices were not found to be significantly different in the prepubertal group, whereas Homa-IR, QUICKI, Matsuda, and OGIS were significantly different in the pubertal group. Age, waist circumference, and OUICKI were found to be risk factors associated with the presence of NALFD in the logistic-regression analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Age, waist circumference, and OUICKI were found to be risk factors associated with NALFD. As the value of QUICKI decreases, the probability of having steatosis increases. Although OGTT results gave the information about the glucose tolerance of a subject, indices derived from OGTT were not found to be superior to the traditional surrogates such as Homa-IR or QUICKI

Peacock Bundles: Bundle Coloring for Graphs with Globality-Locality Trade-off

Bundling of graph edges (node-to-node connections) is a common technique to enhance visibility of overall trends in the edge structure of a large graph layout, and a large variety of bundling algorithms have been proposed. However, with strong bundling, it becomes hard to identify origins and destinations of individual edges. We propose a solution: we optimize edge coloring to differentiate bundled edges. We quantify strength of bundling in a flexible pairwise fashion between edges, and among bundled edges, we quantify how dissimilar their colors should be by dissimilarity of their origins and destinations. We solve the resulting nonlinear optimization, which is also interpretable as a novel dimensionality reduction task. In large graphs the necessary compromise is whether to differentiate colors sharply between locally occurring strongly bundled edges ("local bundles"), or also between the weakly bundled edges occurring globally over the graph ("global bundles"); we allow a user-set global-local tradeoff. We call the technique "peacock bundles". Experiments show the coloring clearly enhances comprehensibility of graph layouts with edge bundling.Comment: Appears in the Proceedings of the 24th International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2016

Assessment of Quality Attributes of Hybrids Developed from Pure Lines of Cherry and Cocktail-Type Tomatoes

Tomato is worldwide the most grown vegetable. The primary target of breeding programs is to develop new tomato cultivars that are resistant to pests and diseases, in combination with high quality and yield, well-adaptation and good firmness. Among the different tomato types, cherry and cocktail tomatoes are widely preferred by consumers due to their better taste and appearance. In this study, two female tester lines were crossed with four male lines to obtain new tomato hybrids. The eight F1 hybrids and two commercial hybrids were planted in a randomised complete block design with two replications in a greenhouse in Antalya. The tomatoes of the hybrids and lines were harvested at fully ripened stage to evaluate yield, total soluble solids (TSS), fruit firmness, lycopene content and fruit colour parameters. TSS values of the cultivars and lines ranged from 4.5 to 9.5 8Bx, fruit firmness from 7.94 to 11.85 kg cm2, lycopene from 52.10 to 55.88 mg kg1, yield from 554.3 to 1336.7 g/plant. Hybrid AK0020 was found the best for both yield and quality

One-Parameter Homothetic Motion in the Hyperbolic Plane and Euler-Savary Formula

In \cite{Mul} one-parameter planar motion was first introduced and the relations between absolute, relative, sliding velocities (and accelerations) in the Euclidean plane E2\mathbb{E}^2 were obtained. Moreover, the relations between the Complex velocities one-parameter motion in the Complex plane were provided by \cite{Mul}. One-parameter planar homothetic motion was defined in the Complex plane, \cite{Kur}. In this paper, analogous to homothetic motion in the Complex plane given by \cite{Kur}, one-parameter planar homothetic motion is defined in the Hyperbolic plane. Some characteristic properties about the velocity vectors, the acceleration vectors and the pole curves are given. Moreover, in the case of homothetic scale hh identically equal to 1, the results given in \cite{Yuc} are obtained as a special case. In addition, three hyperbolic planes, of which two are moving and the other one is fixed, are taken into consideration and a canonical relative system for one-parameter planar hyperbolic homothetic motion is defined. Euler-Savary formula, which gives the relationship between the curvatures of trajectory curves, is obtained with the help of this relative system

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) is routinely used to establish predictive antibiotic resistance metrics to guide the treatment of bacterial pathogens. Recently, a novel phenotype termed "bicarbonate (NaHCO3)-responsiveness" was identified in a relatively high frequency of clinical MRSA strains, wherein isolates demonstrate in vitro "susceptibility" to standard β-lactams (oxacillin [OXA]; cefazolin [CFZ]) in the presence of NaHCO3, and in vivo susceptibility to these β-lactams in experimental endocarditis models. We investigated whether a targeted phenotypic-genotypic screening of MRSA could rule in or rule out NaHCO3 susceptibility upfront. We studied 30 well-characterized clinical MRSA bloodstream isolates, including 15 MIC-susceptible to CFZ and OXA in NaHCO3-supplemented Mueller-Hinton Broth (MHB); and 15 MIC-resistant to both β-lactams in this media. Using a two-tiered strategy, isolates were first screened by standard disk diffusion for susceptibility to a combination of amoxicillin-clavulanate [AMC]. Isolates then underwent genomic sequence typing: MLST (clonal complex [CC]); agr; SCCmec; and mecA promoter and coding region. The combination of AMC disk susceptibility testing plus mecA and spa genotyping was able to predict MRSA strains that were more or less likely to be NaHCO3-responsive in vitro, with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. Validation of this screening algorithm was performed in six strains from the overall cohort using an ex vivo model of endocarditis. This ex vivo model recapitulated the in vitro predictions of NaHCO3-responsiveness vs. nonresponsiveness above in five of the six strains

Giant secreting adrenal myelolipoma in a man: a case report

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Adrenal myelolipoma is a rare, benign neoplasm that is usually asymptomatic, unilateral and nonsecreting. It develops within the adrenal gland and is composed of mature adipose tissue with elements of the hematopoietic series. We describe the case of what is, to the best of our knowledge, one of the largest secreting adrenal myelolipomas reported in the literature.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 52-year-old Caucasian man of medium build who had had moderate hypertension for three years presented to our hospital. He had no other significant symptoms. His hypertension was pharmacologically treated. He came to our hospital to undergo abdominal ultrasonography during a clinical checkup. The ultrasound scan showed the presence of a voluminous hyperechoic mass interposed between the spleen and the left kidney. It was reported as a myelolipoma of the left kidney on the basis of its structural characteristics and position. Computed tomography confirmed our diagnosis. All preoperative biochemical tests were normal, with the exception of high serum cortisol, which was being overproduced by the lesion and was probably responsible for the patient's hypertension. He underwent successful surgery, and his postoperative course was uneventful. The pathologic examination of the lesion confirmed the diagnosis of adrenal myelolipoma. The patient's blood pressure returned to within the normal range.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The "incidental" discovery of an adrenal mass requires careful diagnostic study to plan adequate therapeutic management. Both of the primary investigations at our disposal, ultrasound and blood tests (adrenal hormones), helped in rendering the diagnosis and allowed us to move toward the most appropriate treatment, taking into account the size of the tumor and its probable hormonal production.</p
